On April 18, 2017 the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed a resolution to do two things: Power the South Lake Tahoe community with electricity provided from 100 percent renewable sources by 2032; and reduce community carbon emissions from baseline by at least 80 percent by 2040. The 100% Renewable Committee was formed to help the City accomplish these tasks.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Each of the nine candidates for City Council answered the same ten questions that were given to them by South Tahoe Now. For each of the next nine days the candidate's responses will be shared in the order received.

First up is Wendy David, the current mayor of South Lake Tahoe. She is seeking a second term on the Council.

California's State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson is wrapping up his final term by touring some of the state's schools.

In just a few days he went from visiting a school in Los Angeles with an enrollment of 4,000 to touring Alpine County Schools and the Diamond Valley Elementary School campus, in particular, which has 80 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

“It is a small school in numbers but mighty in its focus and learning,” said Torlakson in Alpine County on Sept. 20.

Join the Friends of the Library as we welcome the UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe for an informational program on preparing a garden for the winter. After an inside "how to" session, we'll all head out to the Library's new BB's Garden to have a hands on demonstration. The Friends are looking for volunteers who would like to help maintain the library's garden, so in addition to be a workshop for all who want to learn gardening techniques for our unique Tahoe environment, this afternoon is also a training session for volunteers.

On the morning of Saturday, September 15, Clean Tahoe and Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers scoured beaches, rivers, and meadows along the south and east shores of Lake Tahoe to pick up trash and debris as part of the 10th annual Great Sierra River Cleanup.

This summer marks the tenth anniversary of Lake Tahoe’s Watercraft Inspection Program. Under the program, every motorized watercraft is inspected to ensure it is clean, drained, and dry and not carrying aquatic invasive species before launching at Tahoe.

Lisa "The Angel of Tahoe" Maloff continues to spread her blessings around South Lake Tahoe, and this time Live Violence free was the recipient.

The carpet at their office on Lake Tahoe Boulevard was in serious need of replacing as it had become a safety hazard with its ripples. Kids that visit the non-profit agency for services often ended up playing on the thread bare carpet that had seen better days.

Crews were at the office this week, ripping out the old carpet and putting in new flooring, something that is waterproof and easy to clean.

Over 50 possible major forest firest have been prevented in the Lake Tahoe Basin since the AlertTahoe camera system was installed around the lake over the last four years. The combination of technology, human observation and firefighters on the ground kept those small fires contained to a space of less than one acre.

Dear Mayor David and Council Members:

For the past several months, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has been contacting homeless individuals using the meadow behind Motel 6 as an illegal campground, advising them that the area would soon be off limits.

Tahoe local, Krissi Russell, has written a bilingual version of her original sing-along story, In The Meadow (Don’t Feed Our Bears).
"No Alimente a nuestros osos Don’t Feed Our Bears" features the same beautiful full color illustrations and the same toe tapping melody. The difference is there are now two musical versions of the same message: Don’t feed our Tahoe wildlife!

There will be a kitten adoption day at Michael Hohl Honda in Carson City on Saturday, July 28 from 12:00 pm. to 4:00 p.m.

Each kitten is certified and pre-owned. Catmandu, a non-profit cat adoption sanctuary in Carson City, is partnering with the Honda dealership to help homeless and rescued kittens find their "FUR"ever homes.

During the first two weeks of June, participants in the 13th annual Lake Tahoe Bike Challenge traveled 11,215 miles on foot or on bicycle, burning an estimated 482,245 calories and preventing an estimated 12,105 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and $2,493 in gasoline purchases.

Organized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, the basin-wide Bike Challenge is a friendly competition to see what individuals and teams can rack up the most trips and miles by biking, walking, or taking transit instead of driving cars.

A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations are working on what is being called the 'SR 89 Recreation Management Plan,' which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline. Some residential neighborhoods also rest along this area.

The Tahoe Fund has launched a new website, Take Care Tahoe (www.takecaretahoe.org), to connect visitors and locals with all the events and volunteer opportunities that Tahoe has to offer in keeping Lake Tahoe and the surrounding lands pristine for generations to come.

Summer officially arrived yesterday and recreational activities are in full swing in the Tahoe Basin. The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) would like to take this opportunity to remind visitors and residents that wildfires pose a serious threat to Lake Tahoe neighborhoods and communities and we need help to prevent any unwanted fires this summer. Whether camping, hiking or participating in some other activity in the forest, keep in mind the following advice to Keep Tahoe Fire Safe.

The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Foundation is pleased to announce that Bijou Community School Principal Cindy Martinez is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2018, which she will receive at LTCC’s Commencement ceremony on Friday, June 29. Each year, the LTCC Foundation recognizes one special LTCC graduate to receive this prestigious award based on their exemplary achievements in academic, business, artistic or civic activities.

A new website launched by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), and visitor organizations provides a hub of easy-to-access information about a wide range of travel options in the Tahoe Basin.

The goal of www.LinkingTahoe.com is to increase public awareness of travel options for people to get to, from, and around the Tahoe Basin and encourage more people to walk, bike, use transit, take water shuttles, and choose off-peak times to drive to better manage congestion on the region’s roads.

“Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is committed to serving our community and it was an honor to be able to be a part of Bread & Broth,” commented Michelle Sower, Dean of Instruction at the college in South Lake Tahoe.
