Weather update from UC Davis - Due to winter storm warnings, and in a effort to accommodate as many attendees as possible, TERC will be moving tomorrow's (January 16th) lecture to next week on Thursday, January 23, 2020. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope you will be able to join us next week when John Henry Beyer, Ph.D., Geophysicist and retired Research Program Manager at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, explains the science behind climate change in a way that is engaging and understandable.
Global climate change the focus on next TERC Talk in Incline Village

Humans produce carbon pollution. It's no secret. When we drive our cars, heat and light our homes, grow our food... we emit CO2. All around the world, habitats called carbon sinks have absorbed approximately 25% of this carbon pollution reducing the risk of global warming impacts without imposing a monetary cost on society.
Volunteers needed at CA State Parks and UC Davis Environmental Center

California State Parks Foundation has created a way for people to enjoy their parks while volunteering for a day. This is happening across the state in response to budget cuts.
Park Champions is having their first workday at Ed Z'Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Thursday, June 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to remove invasive plants in order to restore habitat for the birds and the bees. Tools, training and snacks provided. The Sierra State Parks Foundation will also offer volunteers a free guided tour.
State of the Lake Address held in North Lake Tahoe August 14th

Find out how healthy the lake is at the annual State of the Lake Address at the Tahoe Environmental Center in Incline Village on August 14.
Dr. Geoff Schladow will report on how the quality of Lake Tahoe's water has changed as well as examining the long term trends that affect clarity. Schladow is the founding director of TERC and an expert in the areas of environmental fluid mechanics, water quality modeling, and the dynamics of inland waters.
UC Davis researcher Charles Goldman to discuss Lake Tahoe, climate change

Lake Tahoe, climate change and how global warming affects the lake will be the subject of a discussion by renowned limnologist Dr. Charles Goldman Friday, 6 p.m. June 7 at the Sierra Nevada College campus in Incline Village.
UC Davis research at Lake Tahoe began with Dr. Goldman. In 1959, he formed the Tahoe Research Group and began regularly monitoring Lake Tahoe. Goldman successfully combined effective research and social action with his pioneering studies of lake eutrophication (the dense growth of algae and other organisms).

Migratory birds are commonly thought of as only summer visitors to the northern latitudes, but there are some migratory birds that can only be found in the Lake Tahoe area during winter.
There are also birds that have lost their way and end up in unexpected areas during the winter. Learn what visiting birds to look for in winter, where they came from, and why winter is a good time for them to be in the area, whether you are searching in the Tahoe Basin, Sierra Valley, or Carson Valley.

On January 5, 2012 from 2 to 5 p.m., the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center will host a winter-themed Family Science Day. Families are invited to explore the mysteries of snow and ice. Engaging activities will provide your child an opportunity to learn about the science of winter. Children will conduct scientific experiments, view snowflakes under a microscope, take a snow-core and determine the water content of snow, learn about wind chill and why some animals hibernate, and much more.
