Centerpiece of Coyote Legacy Plaza unveiled

UCLA has the Bruin, USC has Tommy Trojan, and now Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) has the Coyote. Just in time for graduation, LTCC's completed Coyote Legacy Plaza was unveiled to a group of community members, trustees, board members and donors Monday.
The plaza sits between the Physical Education building and the soccer field and displays engraved pavers with donors names on them, surrounding the bronze coyote jumping a log sitting on top of a brick bed.

Steph Curry returns to Lake Tahoe for American Century Championship

Steph Curry, fresh off the Golden State Warrior's third championship in four years, is heading to Lake Tahoe to vie for a different title, one at the American Century Championship July 10-15. He had a final round 68 last year that included 28 of his total 60 Stableford points to finish fourth.
Famous clarity of Lake Tahoe sharply drops

The epic clarity of Lake Tahoe was measured at an average of 59.7 feet in 2017, a 9.5 foot drop from the previous year and 10.3 feet lower than the five-year average according to the annual report compiled by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.
This measurement surpasses the previous lowest level of 64.1 feet which was recorded in 1997, but far below the record high of over 100 feet in the mid-1960s.
Harrahs Tahoe and Harvey's to start paid parking program Saturday

Harrah’s and Harveys Lake Tahoe announced today that they once again have a paid valet and self-parking program this year, beginning on the first concert date of the summer, Saturday, June 16.
Parking rates will run $20 for self-parking and $25 for valet parking with both cash and credit cards accepted for payment, and will run this summer on days and nights during major special events and peak holiday periods at both Stateline, Nevada properties.

For 25 years the Club has featured leadership events, community service projects, club meetings and recreational trips. Small series of earthquakes north of Lake Tahoe

There have been several earthquakes north of Lake Tahoe today, starting with one that measured 3.1 at 12:32 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the Nevada State Seismology Lab at the University of Nevada Reno, there have been 12 more tremblers as of 1:20 p.m. All are between five miles north of Mt. Rose and Interstate 80.
The Sierra Nevada and Western Nevada experience several earthquakes annually, and in recent years those numbers have been over 22,000 each year, with most of them under 1.0. So far in 2018 there have been over 6,000 measurable events.

June 13, 2018 - 6:30pm Chautauquan Tom Lorentzen will portray American author John Steinbeck at 6:30 pm, followed by stargazing with the Astronomical Society of Nevada at 9:00 pm, on Wednesday, June 13 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.
John Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962. Among his classic works are The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden and Of Mice and Men. The year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of his death. Although most recognized for his fiction, Steinbeck also wrote non-fiction.

Lake Tahoe Community College announces free tuition program

South Lake Tahoe, CA - Starting in Fall 2018, all first-time, full-time California residents or AB540 eligible students attending Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) will pay no tuition their first year. The Lake Tahoe College Promise is available to any student who is attending college for the first time. LTCC offers associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and vocational certificates in more than 40 areas of study, including Psychology, Business, Fire Science, Culinary Arts, and Allied Health.

Closing out day three at the 2018 Amgen Tour of California, and rebounding one year later at the race where his team pulled him after suffering a concussion and broken collarbone, Trek-Segafredo’s Toms Skujins (LAT) made a late race move that paid off, along with Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling Team’s Sean Bennett (El Cerrito, Calif.) – one of the youngest in the race at 22 – together creating a gap that held all the way through the Laguna Seca Recreation Area’s speedway finish line.
Remembering Bill Morgan

We at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency are mourning the passing of Bill Morgan. In the pantheon of people who have contributed mightily to the agency’s success, Bill is in the top tier. He was executive director from April 1, 1985 to September 30, 1989, one of the most tumultuous times for TRPA. There is a high likelihood that there would be no TRPA if Bill had not been at the helm and found ways to bring disparate parties together.

With just over 2k left to ride to the summit of Gibraltar Road, Team Sky’s 21-year-old Egan Bernal (COL) attacked and swiftly climbed away to a solo victory to close out Stage 2 of the 2018 Amgen Tour of California. Tao Geoghegan Hart and his Team Sky teammates set an unyielding pace all the way up the steep grade in support of lead rider Bernal to help launch him to his fourth victory of the 2018 season, shoring up the race lead as well as nearly all of the classification wins with today’s epic climb and overall performance.

2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival schedule announced

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The coming months at the historic Valhalla Grand Hall, Grand Lawn and Boathouse Theater will be busy with a full slate of activities planned for the 2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival.
The festival is Valhalla Tahoe’s flagship event, a unique celebration of music, theatre and the visual arts. The festival is set against the magnificent backdrop of Lake Tahoe and the Tallac Historic Site. Looking forward to its 34th year, it is produced by Valhalla Tahoe.
The Festival begins in mid-June with events and activities that continue throughout August.

Jean was born on May 31, 1945 in Longview, Texas, to Viola and Frank Gurney. She spent her formative years in Massachusetts with her parents and sister Ann, and graduated from Minnechaug Regional High School in 1963.

A peek into the hub of public safety for South Lake Tahoe

This has been National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, so what better time to sit down with the women who answer 911 calls in South Lake Tahoe who are the first step in protecting homes, property and people and the unsung heroes of the community.
With an average of 300 to 400 calls going into dispatch each month, staff has to be ready to handle an emergency at every moment through their shift, which in South Lake Tahoe is normally 10 hours long, though they can be up to 12 hours.

Douglas County Sheriff's Explorers take top honors at competition

The Douglas County Sheriff's Explorers cam home from the Central Valley Law Enforcement Explorer Competition with 15 trophies, including the top award, 1st place overall, out-preforming the Hanford Police Department who have been the long standing first place holders.
There were 19 events at the competition which was held in Tulare, California April 6-7, 2018. The Douglas County team was up against 12 posts from the Central Valley area.

Prescribed fire operations will continue around several areas around Lake Tahoe this week, weather permitting. he Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations in Sugar Pine Point and Burton Creek state parks on the West Shore, Carnelian Bay and Kings Beach on the North Shore, Logan Shoals on the East Shore and on Kingsbury Grade and off Ski Run Boulevard on the South Shore. Smoke may be present.

Young professionals hold networking events on both shores of Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) has two networking mixers for the month of April, both great opportunities for people of all ages to socialize with other professionals and expand their network.
A South Shore networking mixer will take place on Wednesday, April 11 and a North Shore mixer on Tuesday, April 17. All members of the community are invited to attend these events, regardless of age. Although membership is encouraged and available for purchase at events, it is not required.

A huge thank you to all those that came out and supported South Lake Tahoe Rotary’s recent fundraiser at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Kevin Sommerfeld, Kelly Higgins and the whole support crew at the golf course were great hosts at their newly renovated clubhouse.
The cast of “Divorce Southern Style” put on 6 great performances and dedicated many hours to this very funny play. The show and set were a success because of their help in creating and attaining set props and pieces.

The community is invited to join the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club for an evening of live music, great food, drinks and friends at the 29th annual Elegant Evening will be held at Harrah's Tahoe on Saturday, April 21, 2018.
The evening's festivities start with a 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. cocktail party and social time, moving to a seated dinner from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and dancing all night with Trey Stone until 10:30 p.m.
Guests will enjoy selective tastings from Crystal Basin Cellars, Tahoe Blue Vodka, Lake Tahoe AleWorx and Double Bond Wine.
