America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe rescheduled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another event casualty due to the coronavirus is the 29th annual America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride. Originally set for Sunday, June 7, it has been rescheduled to combine with the 18th annual Tour de Tahoe, set for Sunday, September 13, 2020. This due to the uncertainty of current and changing CDC coronavirus COVID-19 restrictions and mandates by national, state and county health agencies.

Douglas County Sheriff's Explorers take top honors at competition

The Douglas County Sheriff's Explorers cam home from the Central Valley Law Enforcement Explorer Competition with 15 trophies, including the top award, 1st place overall, out-preforming the Hanford Police Department who have been the long standing first place holders.

There were 19 events at the competition which was held in Tulare, California April 6-7, 2018. The Douglas County team was up against 12 posts from the Central Valley area.

Kudos: Tip-a-Cop in Douglas County raises funds for Special Olympics

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) and the Special Olympics athletes wish to thank the community for their overwhelming generosity and support at the Tip-A-Cop event at Chili’s which was held on Thursday, April 27, 2017. During this event $2,726 was raised, the largest total the County has ever earned toward this worthy cause.

DCSO Explorers bring home 13 trophies from competition

Nine members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) Explorer Post #2105
gave an outstanding performance this past weekend during the Central Coast Law Enforcement Exploring Competition in Tulare, Calif. They competed against 21 other police, sheriff and highway patrol posts in 19 different scenarios including felony car stops, shooting skills, written exams, oral interviews, suspicious persons and physical agility.

DCSO Explorers won 13 trophies including second place overall for the entire competition.

Douglas County Explorers compete against 300 others in California competition

Members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Explorer's Post #2105 recently competed against 25 other law enforcement agencies in the 2016 Central Valley Law Enforcement Explorer Competition in Hanford, Calif.

The two day event against Explorers from California featured both mentally and physically challenging events.

"This young team, most of whom is their second time competing, did an outstanding job overall and represented Douglas County very well," said Sgt. Bernadette Smith in a press release.

Lake Tahoe Community College and Tahoe Center for Orthopedics offer a week-long summer camp exploring the mountains around Lake Tahoe. Days are filled with activities encouraging trust and cooperation as kids venture in nature’s playground. This spring Live Violence Free, in collaboration with a multitude of partners, has been fortunate enough to expand the annual Girls Empowerment Retreat and organize the first ever Boys Empowerment Event. With the generosity of funding from Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and MacDuff’s Public House, Live Violence Free worked closely with South Tahoe Middle School to engage 7th and 8th grade girls and boys in discovering their true potential for greatness.

Volunteers are needed by the California Highway Patrol for two of their programs on the South Shore, Senior Volunteers and Explorers.

The Senior Volunteer Program provides senior adult men and women the opportunity to
volunteer their time to assist CHP employees in the performance of their duties.
This assistance enhances the Department’s ability to provide safety, service, and security for all Californians.

Awards for outstanding contributions to their community were handed out during Friday's Law and Order Night for Douglas County law enforcement agencies.

Employees from Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Juvenile Probation, China Springs Youth Camp, DCSO Youth Explorers, Citizen Patrol, Posse, Search and Rescue, Reserves, 911 Communications, as well as State of Nevada Department of Corrections, and Nevada Highway Patrol were all honored.

NFL great Jim McMahon in Carson Valley this weekend for two events

NFL and Superbowl star Jim McMahon will be participating in two Carson Valley events this weekend. “Fore the Kids” Charity Golf Tournament, which opens the year at the Genoa Lakes Ranch Course, will be held on Saturday, May 14. DCSO Explorer Scouts volunteer at Pebble Beach golf tournament

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Explorers just finished a week-long detail in Pebble Beach, California working the AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament to earn money for their POST.

Thirteen DCSO Explorers handled pedestrian control, traffic control and security details in and around the famous 17 mile drive in Pebble Beach. They saw golf professionals like Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh as well as amateurs like Justin Timberlake, Mark Wahlberg, Carson Daly and Larry The Cable Guy.

Recently, I had the chance to visit the much-hyped Tahoe: A visual History at the Nevada Museum of Art. Located in the hip, CalAve District wedged between downtown and midtown Reno, the museum offers locals to the region a taste of world-class art collections. During events like Art Town (a marathon of a hundred-or-so art related events in Reno during the month of July), the museum offers innumerable pieces from local and global artists alike.

Unique Lake Tahoe exhibit opens at Nevada Museum Of Art In Reno

The first major historical art survey of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra’s infamous Donner Pass takes an ambitious trip through two centuries, highlighting the roles of Native Americans and railroad barons and the tourists and scientists trying to halt the loss of clarity in the azure waters.

“Tahoe: A Visual History” opened Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art, featuring more than 400 objects by 175 painters, photographers, architects, basket weavers and sculptors. Arranged chronologically for the most part, it combines culturally and historically significant creations with contemporary works.

LTCC’s Avalanche Workshop a One-Of-A-Kind Tahoe Event

In a space agency filled with trailblazers, Sally K. Ride was a pioneer of a different sort. The soft-spoken California physicist broke the gender barrier 29 years ago when she rode to orbit aboard space shuttle Challenger to become America’s first woman in space.

Ride, 61, died in La Jolla, Calif. after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, NASA reports on Monday.

The sci-fi thriller "Chronicle," currently showing at the Horizon Stadium inside the Horizon Casino Resort in Stateline at Lake Tahoe, explores the world of ESP in general and telekinesis in particular.
