Big fish caught at Lake Tahoe

Below is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. This report is for the week of Dec. 12-18. We want to note a big fish caught by Eric St. Denis of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., pictured above. Eric caught a 28-pound, 9-ounce Mackinaw trout at Lake Tahoe on Dec. 9, at 10:30 a.m. Photos courtesy of Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters.
The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.

Stolen Lake Tahoe crayfish traps a 'huge' cost to local harvester

Someone is stealing traps laid in the waters of Lake Tahoe to catch crayfish, a crime the owner of Tahoe’s first commercial fishing operation in decades says is crushing his business.
Since August and only a month after Tahoe Lobster Co. commenced operations, 77 traps have disappeared at a combined cost in lost gear and product amounting to about $8,000, said Fred Jackson, the company’s founder. Twenty traps were stolen from waters off Tahoe’s east shore just this week, Jackson said.
“It’s just destroying us,” Jackson said. “It’s huge.”

Last Thursday, Elaine and I spent an enjoyable morning (as usual) fishing for Mackinaw (Lake) Trout at Lake Tahoe with our longtime friend and sport fishing guide, Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

"Gino" has fished Tahoe for some 30 years and is one of the top, if not the top, fishing guides at that lake.
Sigh, and as usual on that day, Man's Favorite Sport belonged to Elaine for the fourth straight year!

Outdoors with Don Q: Head to the Sierra for fun, fish and to stay cool

It’s that time of the year again. This is my annual reminder that if you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun. I do not like the summer months.
I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.
I am miserable and grouchy during hot weather months, especially August.
To be honest, I dislike the weather anytime it gets past 80-85 degrees.

Crawfish gripped the decks of the Ellie June on Thursday as Fred Jackson and his nephew Justin Pulliam guided the boat from trap to trap off the shore of Sand Harbor, pulling up hundreds of crustaceans to sell to restaurants and casinos in Nevada.
Jackson, owner of Tahoe Lobster Co., got the permit in July to start the first commercial fishing operation in Lake Tahoe since the 1930s. A dream that started two years ago when Jackson woke up one night with the idea to catch and sell crawfish has finally become a reality.

Lake Tahoe crawfish plans move forward, TRPA hearing July 5

Scientists now estimate close to 300-million crayfish in Lake Tahoe and they say that is adding up to clarity problems for the lake.
"The crayfish are like cattle on the landscape, moving across the lake bottom," says Dr. Sudeep Chandra who is a lake specialist and a professor of limnology at UNR. "They eat dead algae and fertilize more algae blooms and we think that is impacting the clarity of the lake."
