Fifty years have elapsed since the release of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which creatively tried to make sense of the past and speculated about the future.

Northern Nevada lecturer Mike Thomas will review that 1968 blockbuster film and its impact on a generation during his presentation on Saturday, April 14 at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City. Thomas will also provide a lecture on “Old West Lawmen” on Friday, April 13 at the observatory.

The cast of “Divorce Southern Style” put on 6 great performances and dedicated many hours to this very funny play. The show and set were a success because of their help in creating and attaining set props and pieces.

All eyes will be on South Lake Tahoe this May as top women and men cyclists from around the world race through the mountains during the annual Amgen Tour of California (TOC).

The top cycling teams from the U.S., Switzerland, Germany and Belgium are now confirmed to race the 645 miles of Amgen for men, including BMC Racing Team ,Team Sky, Bora–Hansgrohe and Team Katusha–Alpecin.

If you had walked onto the LTCC campus on Tuesday, April 3, you would have never guessed that there were 325 6th grade youth and 220 agency and volunteer workers throughout the corridors, all learning information on how and why to keep themselves safe from drugs. “Choices, what are yours?” was the theme of our efforts in keeping our youth drug free. With the country’s attitudes and norms about drug use changing, times are even more difficult for our kids.

Chad Donnelly, the CEO of SnowGlobe Music Festival, the City of South Lake Tahoe and members of the No Globe Alliance spent the month of march working together to address concerns about the three-day music festival held annually in South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Last October, California experienced a series of devastating wildfires that destroyed property and took lives. In a four month period the State endured fires and floods from San Diego to Mendocino that destroyed over 11,000 homes and commercial structures and killed 64 Californians. Local Government fire and rescue personnel and equipment comprised up to 80 percent available resources for mutual aid throughout the State. The City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Department along with other fire agencies around the basin engaged in these critical fire fights.

Tahoe Wellness Cooperative (TWC), the only medicinal marijuana collective in South Lake Tahoe, was given the boost they needed Tuesday during a special SLT City Council meeting.

Cody Bass, the nonprofit's executive director, has been unable to purchase many products for this business since retail sales of marijuana have been allowed in the state of California. Those businesses are now only allowed to sell to others with a license.

Earth Day at Lake Tahoe has a special meaning. Working together through the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program, more than 50 local, state, federal, nonprofit, and private sector partners are implementing projects and programs to conserve the Tahoe Basin’s environment and fix past environmental harms.

Vicki Moore has resigned as Douglas County Chief Financial Officer, effective March 20, 2018. Mrs. Moore tendered her resignation to County Manager, Larry Werner.

“This was a difficult departure, and we wish her the best in her future career endeavors,” said Larry Werner.

Vicki Moore was promoted by Douglas County on April 24, 2017. The Chief Financial Officer oversees the Finance Department, which is responsible for the administration of financial affairs for the county.

Douglas County is currently working through the Fiscal Year Budget for 2018-2019.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If the name Mya Rossi rings a bell, you would be correct. South Tahoe Now has carried two stories on the 14-year-old, one when she became the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Youth of the Year, and the second when she was awarded the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship to attend Science Camp of America: Air and Space in Hawaii.

Now Mya has made it to the Northern California Regional Finals for the Boys and Girls Club of America Youth of the Year Competition.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is looking for hard-working, dedicated volunteers that are interested in helping to preserve one of our nation’s most beautiful wilderness areas, Desolation Wilderness. The El Dorado County Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Don Ashton has been going from community to community, holding round table discussions about the upcoming budget for the county.

All residents from the South Shore are invited to a round table discussion about the budget Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at the California Conservation Corps Tahoe Center at 1949 Apache Avenue in Meyers from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

What does a community "rich in art" look like? The Tahoe Arts Alliance is partnering with Nevada Arts Council to hold a Public Arts Town Meeting and to share and get public input on Tuesday, March 13 at the Tahoe Mountain Lab from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Residents, businesses and non-profits are being brought together to assess the current "state of the arts" on the South Shore.

There is a much calmer forecast for the week ahead in South Lake Tahoe. After a week where snow was measured in feet, the next few days will allow residents to finish shoveling out their driveways.

Members of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state and federal agencies, will continue prescribed fire operations this week in multiple locations around the Tahoe Basin, weather permitting. North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California Tahoe Conservancy and U.S.

With the March 6 South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting set to address the annual music festival SnowGlobe, the Parks & Recreation Commission held a special meeting to decide what their stance would be on the festival being held on the Community Playfields.

The new playfields have never had a soccer or football game played on them, but they are in need of a lot of repair after SnowGlobe unpacked and left after their Dec. 29-31 event.

Like many communities across the country, the Tahoe Basin is facing an affordable housing crisis. The high cost to buy or rent a home is simply unaffordable for most Tahoe residents. It’s a problem for people of many economic backgrounds, including middle-income teachers, nurses, police, and firefighters.

Popular Southern California-based band Slightly Stoopid will return to the South Shore to kick-off the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena on Saturday, June 16 at 5:00 p.m. This will be their fifth outing at the award-winning summer concert venue.

The band, who describe themselves as “a fusion of folk, rock, reggae and blues with hip-hop, funk, metal and punk,” bring along popular support acts Stick Figure and Pepper. Tickets are $39.50 each.

A federal indictment was unsealed last week, charging 36 individuals for their alleged roles in the Infraud Organization, an Internet-based cybercriminal enterprise engaged in the large-scale acquisition, sale, and dissemination of stolen identities, compromised debit and credit cards, personally identifiable information, financial and banking information, computer malware, and other contraband.

Presenter Sherry L. Rupert is the Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, and the first American Indian woman to be appointed a member of Governor Brian Sandoval’s cabinet. She will share the past and future of this historic institution in Carson City. Established in 1890, the Stewart Indian School was one of the first 25 of hundreds of Indian Boarding Schools instituted across the nation to assimilate American Indian children into mainstream culture. The school was open for 90 years and educated over 30,000 American Indian students in the multi-colored stone structures.

We are a diverse group of local South Lake Tahoe residents who are organizing to eliminate or relocate SnowGlobe. This event has unfairly displaced local residents, invaded our homes with noise, closed access to whole neighborhoods, exposed our forests to unnecessary and dangerous potential for fire and attracted visitors who do not reflect the family friendly Lake Tahoe we want to be. We want to bring the experiences of our local community into the light.

The Enchanted Florist in South Lake Tahoe now has a new owner, long time local Karen Estes.

Owners Jeri and Noboru Oishi owned the popular flower shop on Emerald Bay Road for 16 years and handed over the keys to Estes on February 1, 2018.

"I love anything flowers," said Estes who had operated an online and corner market, Karen's Flower Stand.
