City of South Lake Tahoe's 2015 Year in Review

As we welcome in 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe would like to reflect on the accomplishments of 2015. The following is a summary of accomplishments during 2015.

Strategic Priority: Fiscal Sustainability
The most important issue facing cities and local agencies is continued steadfast attention to the budget, both short term and long term fiscal impacts.
· FY 15/16 budget adopted on time and without use of alternative revenues (3rd consecutive year).
· Adopted 5-year Financial Forecast and 5-Year Capital Investment Plan.

Barton's Festival of the Trees and Lights opens; Winners announced

The annual Barton Foundation Festival of Trees and Lights opened Wednesday at MontBleu with tree judging and the Senior Stroll.

Lake Tahoe's Festival of the Trees begins Wednesday

Lights, trees, action! Lake Tahoe community members and visitors are invited to celebrate the holiday season at the seventh annual Festival of Trees and Lights.

The family-friendly festival runs from December 2 through December 6 at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa. This year, all proceeds will support prevention programs and trauma services for Barton Hospital’s Level III Trauma Center.

Community invited to celebrate City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th

The City of South Lake Tahoe has been celebrating its 50th anniversary all year long with a parade, gala and different events to highlight the successes of the city's first five decades. The actual incorporation day was November 30, 1965 and the City will commemorate that with a free community open house in the Council Chambers at the South Lake Tahoe Airport on November 30, 2015 at 3 p.m.

Whittell grad the creative force behind Festival of Trees artwork

Nicole Byer, a 2012 graduate of Whittell High School, is the artist behind the Barton Festival of the Trees posters and Gala invitations.

Currently a senior at the School of Art Institute of Chicago, Byer made contact with organizers of the Festival last year and offered her services for their artwork needs for this year's Festival of the Trees.

Over the summer she met with Kindle Craig and Sara Conrad of the Barton Foundation, the organizers of the annual holiday program.

City of South Lake Tahoe celebrates first 50 years

"South Lake Tahoe, you should be proud of yourself."

Those words, said by South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Brian Williams, were echoed throughout the evening as the City of South Lake Tahoe celebrated its first 50 years with a golden anniversary gala Saturday night.

Almost 300 people were at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel to share memories of the past, review of the present, and a look towards the future of a city that was formed because many of the residents were tired of being represented by a government in Placerville.

Lake Tahoe celebrity golfers to play in Diamond Resorts Tournament in Florida

Sports and entertainment stars, including many of the current and future Hall of Famers, MVPs and stars who golf in South Lake Tahoe's annual celebrity tournament, will be teeing it up in the inaugural Diamond Resorts Invitational celebrity golf tournament at the Golden Bear Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 14-16, 2016.

City prepares for 50th anniversary gala

The City of South Lake Tahoe is coming off a successful 50th Anniversary Parade and heading right into the event to cap off a year of celebrating, the 50th Anniversary Gala.

The black tie event on Saturday, November 7 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel will recognize many founding members, community organizations and residents who made becoming a city a possibility. Significant events will also be highlighted.

Riva Grill cocktail wins Barton Hospital's "Best Cocktail" contest

More than 250 people packed the Riva Grill Thursday night for Barton Foundation's 6th Annual Signature Cocktail Contest.

The winner of the event, Riva Grill's Erick Martinez, is no stranger to the podium. Attendees voted his Blue Linen “Best Cocktail.” The drink combined Tahoe Blue Vodka with lavender, mint, cucumber, and St. Germain. Martinez, who also received the most tips and was voted “Most Congenial Bartender.” Erick received “Most Congenial Bartender” in 2014 and “Best Cocktail” in 2013.

City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th Anniversary community photo

The City of South Lake Tahoe took a community photo last week that will be part of their 50th Anniversary commemorative video and book.

They used the last concert of the summer at Lakeview Commons on August 27 as the backdrop to a drone video and photograph.

Local bartenders to mix up specialties for Barton fundraiser

Sample Tahoe’s newest cocktail creations at the sixth annual Signature Cocktail Contest. Hosted by the Barton Foundation, the community event will take place Wednesday, September 23 at the Riva Grill at 5:30 p.m.

Contest attendees can sample an assortment of cocktails created by Tahoe mixologists who are comprised of bartenders from local establishments, each showcase a unique concoction with Tahoe Blue Vodka and have been known to add less traditional ingredients like cotton candy or potato chips.

Tahoe's Howie Nave headed to Vegas as inductee of Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame

Lake Tahoe radio host, standup comedian and emcee of the Improv at Harveys, Howie Nave is among 62 Nevada radio and television personalities and managers who will be inducted into the Nevada Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame this Saturday in Las Vegas.

Nave, who has been with KRLT FM 93.9 as host of “Howie’s Morning Rush” at Lake Tahoe for nearly 15 years, will be inducted at the Four Seasons Hotel. He joins the ranks of more than 800 broadcasters from around Nevada who make up the Hall of Fame.

Steampunk Party in Tahoe

Cool prizes will go to the most interesting looks of the night. This event kicks off the inaugural Tahoe WordWave festival and will benefit art and culture in South Lake Tahoe.

PABA Gala and Midsummer's Night Dream at South Tahoe High

Designer Christmas Trees are the star of Barton event this week

We all have our own traditional touches we put on our Christmas Trees, from Grandma's special ornament to strung popcorn and cranberries. There is nothing ordinary or traditional about the trees on display at Harrah's Tahoe this week during Barton's Festival of Trees.

Tree designer Tara Dobyns, a 37-year South Lake Tahoe local, was selected to design two trees this year. When asked if she was an artist or decorator, Dobyns answered "no, I'm a landlord!"

Patty Olson receives Spirit of Philanthropy Award

Every year, the Barton Foundation recognizes a philanthropist that stands out above the rest. This year, the Foundation has selected Patty Olson as the beneficiary of their Spirit of Philanthropy award.

Patty moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1950 and was instrumental in in the creation of Barton Memorial Hospital. She was a founding member of the Barton Auxiliary and helped organize the Auxiliary's first fundraiser for the hospital. She hosted many other Barton fundraising events at Young's Bijou Lodge, which she and her husband Neal Olson owned and operated.

Ken Newbold of MontBleu wins People's Choice at Barton Cocktail Contest

More than 200 people enjoyed the unique cocktail creations served up at the 5th Annual Barton Foundation Signature Cocktail contest held at the Riva Grill on Wednesday evening.

The festive and lively evening featured nine bartenders who were challenged to create a drink that featured Tahoe Blue Vodka. Contestants included Stephen Camp (Heavenly), Gary Gramprie (LewMarNel’s), Ian Sievwright (MacDuff’s ), Alice Schmalenberger (Mc P’s Pub ), Ken Newbold (MontBleu), Josh Thompson (Nepheles ), Erick Martinez (Riva Grill), Mara Milich (Sonney’s BBQ ), and Rob Morse (The Boathouse).

Dine with Mark Twain at the historic Dangberg Ranch

South Tahoe High Production of Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein Sure to be a Hit

Lots of fun and great laughs are promised during the South Tahoe High performance of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, The Musical, which will hit the stage of the school's new theater over the next two weekends.

Based on the 1974 movie, Mel Brooks added music and dance numbers to bring the play to a whole new level. "The kids have been working hard with long hours, and they're enjoying it," according to Liz "Niv" Niven, the school's theater director since 1997.

South Tahoe High Performing Arts Boosters Host Gala

The South Tahoe High School Performing Arts Booster Association (PABA) Gala will be held on Saturday, January 25 at 5 pm. For just $30 per ticket you'll get a steak and lobster dinner prepared by local residents, the Romagnolo family. Discounted entrance tickets into the theater department's performance of "Young Frankenstein" immediately after dinner are also available for $10 each.

Dinner is at 5 pm and will be held in the STHS Studen Union. The play will start after dinner in the school's new theater.

Barton Health's Festival of Trees and Lights Successful

This year’s Festival of Trees and Lights was once again a huge success. The six-day event is a collaborative effort between Barton Health staff, community and Auxiliary volunteers, and sponsors. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, decorated a tree or a wreath, donated an auction item, or sponsored one of our many events! A special thanks to Barton Foundation’s volunteer steering committee who worked all year long to ensure the event was a magical experience.

Holiday Activities in South Lake Tahoe This Weekend

Freshly fallen snow will add to the holiday ambiance of events in South Lake Tahoe this weekend!

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society invites everyone to their annual Holiday in History Open House on Saturday and Sunday, December 7-8. On Saturday from 11 to 7 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, visitors can tour the 1930s log cabin, view a Victorian holiday scene, enjoy free cider and cookies and children can even call the North Pole from a special antique phone! The event is free.

Coldwell Banker Select to Contribute to Barton Festival of Trees and Lights

The Barton Foundation has been a cornerstone for The Barton Health Group for more than 20 years by providing excellent healthcare service to customers and also have been big players during the holiday season. This year’s Barton Festival of Trees and Lights will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Barton Health and Coldwell Banker Select will be contributing to the event in a major way. The franchise will be donating a gorgeous “sports themed” Christmas tree to the event, which will be auctioned off at the black tie gala event on December 7th.

Live Violence Free’s 14th Annual Sunset Gala

Join Live Violence Free for their 14th Annual Sunset Gala at Harvey's Top of the Wheel on Friday, September 27 from 6 p.m. to 9 pm. This is their biggest fundraiser of the year and provides funds for all of their programs and services offered to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.

The night is used to celebrate the strength of survivors and focus their efforts to provide them with the much needed resources they deserve on their journey towards healing.

Eric Nageotte-Lowe Memorial fundraiser to benefit Heavenly Foundation teams

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Eric Nageotte-Lowe Memorial Fundraiser to celebrate the life of former South Lake Tahoe resident and Heavenly Freestyle Team member, Eric Nageotte-Lowe this Saturday, Jan. 26, from 5pm to 8pm at the Himmel Haus, 2819 Saddle Rd. across from Heavenly Mountain’s California base area.

“While Eric was a great skier,” said his coach Jere Crawford, “he was an even better person.”

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will kick-off the 13th Lake Tahoe Kinder Kup Race Series at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Sunday, Jan. 27. Open to all skiers age six and under and snowboarders age eight and under, the Kinder Kup series is designed to introduce young athletes to competition in a friendly environment.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation at Lake Tahoe has opened registration for the 2012 – 2013 competitive and development ski and snowboard programs. With a variety of options from the One-Day Program to the Full-Time Competitive Program, the Foundation has something for all ages and levels of skiers and riders. Registration packets are available online and at the HSSF building.

Lake Tahoe Signature Cocktail contests raises nearly $6,000 for Barton Hospital's Trauma Center

Winter was once-again the theme at the third annual Barton Foundation “Signature” Cocktail Contest on Thursday, September 13 at Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe. The contest drew 177 attendees and grossed $5,900.30 for Barton Memorial Hospital’s Level III trauma center designation. Serving as the official “kick-off” of the four-day Festival of Trees & Lights to be held Thursday, November 29 through December 2 at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, the contest included mixologists [bartenders] from 10 restaurants around South Lake Tahoe.
