Subaru WinterFest Kicks Off 2015 in South Lake Tahoe

Winterfest includes a Freeride Skills Course and equipment demos as well as the chance to meet an Olympian. South Lake Tahoe resident and Olympic Gold Medalist Maddie Bowman will be signing autographs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Subaru tent on Saturday. Bowman, 20, brought home the gold she won in the Women’s Ski Halfpipe in Sochi during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

South Lake Tahoe Olympian Maddie Bowman wins on Dew Tour
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/12/2014 - 11:34pmOlympic gold medalists Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson repeated as Dew Tour Mountain Championships winners in Breckenridge, Colo., on Friday.
Bowman, 20, won in her first ski halfpipe competition since May knee surgery. Either of her runs would have taken the trophy. She landed right and left 900s in each, scoring 88.75 and 91.25.
“I felt a different pressure [after the Olympics],” Bowman said, according to the U.S. Ski Team.

South Lake Tahoe Sisters Named to Junior World Ski Championships Team
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/19/2014 - 3:25pmLocal girls, Michael and Whitney Gardner, have been named to the 2014 U.S. Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships team.
They will join 20 other Americans competing in Valmalenco, Italy starting on March 30.
Both girls have attended Whittell High School, Michael is currently a student and Whitney is a graduate. They ski for the Heavenly Valley Ski and Snowboard Foundation.

Anderson clinched the TTR World Snowboard Tour slopestyle title with her win at the snowy Vail Mountain venue. Canadian Spencer O’Brien took second and Isabel Derungs of Switzerland third in the women’s final. Canada’s Mark McMorris took the victory for the men with Norwegian Stale Sandbech taking second and Candian Max Parrot third.

Jamie Anderson, Maddie Bowman, who won gold for snowboarding slopestyle and freeskiing halfpipe respectively, and Hannah Teter who placed fourth in snowboarding halfpipe, will be lauded at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort.

She went into the Olympic Freeskiing Halfpipe finals sitting comfortably in third, led all women with an 89 in the finals. Marie Martinod of France won silver and Ayana Onozuka of Japan won the bronze.
The South Tahoe High graduate, who won the last two XGames in the event, is competing in her first Olympics at age 20. She is now the first woman to ever win a gold medal in the inaugural Olympic Ski Halfpipe.
Olympians from Lake Tahoe Have Higher Medal Count Than Some Countries
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/18/2014 - 11:07pmThe gold medals won by Jamie Anderson and David Wise, along with the bronze won by Julia Mancuso have put the Lake Tahoe medal count above those won by Great Britain and Finland, and the same as Australia and Latvia.
Lake Tahoe's medal count can still increase with Maddie Bowman's Freeskiing Halfpipe coming up on Thursday, and the men's Giant Slalom and Slalom on Wednesday and Saturday where Tim Jitloff will try to medal as well.
Reno's David Wise Wins Gold in the Sochi: Skis out of Northstar in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/18/2014 - 10:28amDavid Wise of Reno, Nevada won gold today in the first ever Olympic Men's Freeskiing Halfpipe in Sochi. The Wooster High Grad topped competitors with a first run of 92 and hit the deck and didn't finish his second run.
The 23 year old Wise calls Northstar of Lake Tahoe his home resort. He won the gold medal in the X Games the last three years.

Maddie will be part of the inaugural Olympic Freeskiing Halfpipe event. Qualification rounds are Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Sochi time (6:30 a.m. Tahoe time) with the finals at 9:30 p.m. Sochi time (9:30 a.m. Tahoe time).
Hannah Teter from South Lake Tahoe Just Misses Podium with 4th in Snowboarding Halfpipe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/12/2014 - 10:35amHannah Teter from South Lake Tahoe just missed a medal today, edged out by just .25 by USA teammate Kelly Clark. She scored a 90.5 in the first round and touched down and scored a 26.75 in the second round.
American Kaitlyn Farrington won the Gold, Tora Bright from Australia took Silver and American Kelly Clark the Bronze.

Olympian Nate Holland from Squaw Valley took snowboardcross gold and David Wise from Reno won gold in the halfpipe skiing.

U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association announced the nomination of 13 halfpipe and slopestyle snowboarding athletes Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix. Slopestyle snowboarding will be contested in the Olympic Winter Games for the first time ever in Sochi. The five event qualifying series came down to the final stop at Mammoth Mountain, with all but two spots decided during the final event weekend.

In addition, skicross athlete John Teller (Mammoth Lakes, CA) was nominated to the team, following his win in the final Olympic qualifying World Cup last week. With the confirmation of quotas within freestyle skiing, the USSA added two skiers in halfpipe and three in slopestyle to round out the full team.

Ski resorts report up to 2 feet of snow from the system which arrived Friday and continues today. The National Weather Service in Reno reports that a second and much colder storm will move into the area on Sunday into Monday, dropping temperatures and bringing more snow. Freestyle skiing trailblazer Sarah Burke dies after Jan. 10 training accident
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 2:00amCanadian freeskier Sarah Burke died Thursday in a Salt Lake City hospital, nine days after crashing at the bottom of the superpipe during a training run in Utah. Burke, who lived near Whistler in British Columbia, was 29. She was injured Jan. 10 while training at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort.
Tests revealed Burke suffered "irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest," according to a statement released by Burke's publicist, Nicole Wool.
