Lake Valley Fire releases holiday truck schedule

The time-honored tradition of Lake Valley Fire Protection District touring streets in their jurisdiction with a decorated fire engine returns starting December 11.

Due to COVID-19, the Holiday engine will not be handing out candy canes this year but all are welcome to wave and say hello from a safe social distance. Each night they start their trek between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

December 11 – Echo View Estates, Tahoe Mountain Road, Mule Deer Circle

December 12 – Lake Tahoe Blvd from Boulder Mountain Drive to Grizzly Mountain Drive

Hazy and sunny start to week in Lake Tahoe, chance of rain/upper elevation snow by the end

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Change is in the air for the Lake Tahoe region this week. We'll be saying goodbye to the 80s and 90s, and hello to more seasonable 60s and 70s.

By the end of the week there is even a slight chance of rain and upper-elevation snow (yes, I said that word).

High pressure will produce warm afternoons, dry conditions, and mainly light winds through mid-week. Mornings will remain cool to chilly. Areas of smoke and haze will linger into Monday or Tuesday. Cooler, breezy, and wet conditions are possible Friday through next weekend.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe awards 19 scholarships

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded scholarships to a group of local students from South Tahoe High, George Whittell High, the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy and Lake Tahoe Community College. The club, serving the community since 1959, has given out over one-million dollars to local graduates over the years.

Abundance of "miller moths" around Lake Tahoe this year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If they were flowers on the ground or money in trees, most would welcome them. But they aren't. And love them or hate them, they’re back!

Miller moths, or the army cutworm, have become a nuisance in many parts of Lake Tahoe over the last few weeks, but not all areas have been affected. Those who have them around their homes are seeing dozens each night, swarming around their lights both inside and outside.

South Tahoe High students organize fundraiser to pay food tab for health care workers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High students have started a GoFundMe account to raise funds to pay the food tab at Sprouts Cafe in South Lake Tahoe.

The "pay-it-forward” fundraising efforts began with sophomores Kaya Roberts, Claire Gurner, Sophia Aronoff, and Soleil Weed. They were working on a history project about "the change we want to see in the world" and decided to do research on mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Forecast of sunny and cold for the week ahead in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As we say goodbye to 2018 and hello to 2019 there will be one constant in Lake Tahoe - sunny days and temperatures well below freezing as the sun goes down.

A cold front will move through the area overnight Sunday night into Monday morning, though it is a dry one. A brisk north to northeast wind will also make it feel considerably colder. As for when the new year begins at midnight, expect it to
be quite chilly.

Mac the Naw: Topaz opener brings lots of catches, large mackinaws being caught at Tahoe

Hello fellow anglers, welcome to the new year and may it bring you tighter lines. I can truly say the Topaz Lake fishing derby is off to a very good start.

On opening day they were plenty of anglers enjoying a fair weather day, where it be from shore or from boat. Most anglers were very successful. I had the pleasure of fishing with Mike and Tom Blotter. We were on the lake at 6 a.m. and had lines in the water right at the precise moment of opening day. We covered the lake in a variety of depths.

Mac the Naw: Topaz fishing opener Jan. 1 brings cash prizes and slot play for big catches

Hello fellow anglers, it is that time of year to celebrate the new year and the Topaz Lake opening day fishing season. On Monday, Jan. 1, 2018 at precisely 6:46 a.m. will be the official starting time for anglers to begin fishing on Topaz Lake.

For those of you driving out that morning, be careful and mindful of other drivers on the road that have might celebrated to much the night before.

Mac the Naw says Merry Fishmas to all and wait awhile longer for Sierra lakes to ice over

Hello fellow anglers. I am happy to say, the winter solstice has come and gone. Meaning, each day now brings one minute longer of daylight. But as we all know, that does not mean it will get any warmer soon. Down here in the Minden and Carson Valleys we've experienced an average of 7 to 10 degree mornings.

Most would think that the higher lakes would be frozen and iced over. I received a report from fellow angler Josh Otto last week. As Josh told me, Caples Lake had high winds and was down right cold and had waves blowing across the lake.

New York performer returns home to teach South Lake Tahoe youth

New York performer and choreographer Sebastiani Romagnolo grew up dancing with Marcia Sarosik at her South Lake Tahoe dance studio, and he returned to those roots this week to help teach the next generation of performers.

The 2007 South Tahoe High and 2011 New York University (NYU) graduate took time out his hectic east coast schedule to head west to visit family in South Lake Tahoe, and visits to town always include a stop by Sarosik's studio.

Many may remember his talent as he headlined many South Tahoe High musicals, and now he's entertaining audiences in New York.

Third annual Meet and Greet connects Mt. Tallac students with community

For the third year, Mt. Tallac High School started off their school year with a community "meet and greet," bringing their students and community members together.

Students greeted their guests with a handshake and a warm hello, something Principal Holly Greenough hopes gives her students a good introduction to community leaders who could possibly be their future employers.

Join in on helping others during "Pay it Forward Week" in South Lake Tahoe

Most places take just one day to officially "Pay it Forward" but one person in the South Lake Tahoe community has made it his goal to cause a ripple effect of kindness through the community for a whole week.

International "Pay it Forward" day is on Friday, April 28 and more than 80 countries and 70 cities across America have made proclamations to join the global initiative and make a difference by creating a huge ripple of kindness across the world. Small acts of kindness, when multiplied by millions of people, can literally change the world for the better.

Tahoe Valley red carpet greeting; Community meets Mt. Tallac students

The doors opened at all seven schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Monday, welcoming students back after their summer vacations.

At Tahoe Valley Elementary, not only were the doors opened, but the red carpet was rolled out, literally. Staff and members of the California Highway Patrol greeted students as they entered the school with fanfare and balloon in celebration of their return.

Not only did the students enjoy the processional, but parents, staff and officers did as well.

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report: Watch out for rattlesnakes

Hello fellow anglers, I have to tell you that last weekend's Lampe Park Kids derby was rewarding. The fishing was slow both days, but there were a few nice fish caught. At one time I felt as if I were at a ball game. I could hear the crowd cheering at one end of Willow Creek with the voices in unison rising and lowering as a 4-year-old angler was reeling in a 7 pound trout.

Opinion: What's up with recycling program in South Lake Tahoe?

Hello!

My name is Keely Kapsoff and after reading an article that was posted up in Incline I realized that I too needed to write a story about my concern with the recycling program in Tahoe.

Well it all started a few years ago when I moved back here and I brought my recyclables into the dump, I did this for many months and realized that every time I gave the guy a bag he would just throw it on top of all the trash. I asked many employees why we don't just have a place to put all the blue bags? All responded that there is a conveyor belt and it sorts it.
