SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy and their State and local partners invite the public to a community meeting to discuss opportunities to help address the housing crisis in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, December 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

CTC owns two properties at the one, one 9.75 acres and the other 1.6 acres in 1989 for the purpose of using the non-sensitive portions of the lots for purposes consistent with the now current area plan.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) begins their search for a replacement for the retiring superintendent the people tasked with finding the right candidates are reaching out to the community.

What is being developed from public meetings and an online survey will create the profile of what makes up the desired characteristics neede or the person who will move into Dr. James Tarwater's position when he retires in June 2020.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) has been working on improving public access at Conolley Beach in South Lake Tahoe for many years, along with other spots along the lake. During their October meeting, the CTC Board voted to spend up to $420,000 on the "Conolley Beach Public Access Project" for the execution of easements and other agreements to build stairs to the beach, construct a trail, add seating areas and stabilize the slope with boulders.

The 2019 legislative year for California has come to an end and Gov. Gavin Newsom wrapped u the session with signing several bills. His first year of office saw 870 new laws and 172 vetoed proposals.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has launched its October Edition of "At Lake Level." The monthly newsletter is prepared by City Manager Frank Rush in an effort to keep the community well informed about City issues and initiatives.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community is invited to attend a forum on the US 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project on Wednesday, September 18 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the Fern Road cul-de-sac.

The project involves the realignment of US 50, south of the tourist core. Importantly for the City of South Lake Tahoe the project includes a new main street in the Heavenly Village area, it requires new affordable housing units be built before construction can begin, additional parking strategies for the tourist core area, pedestrian, bike, and transit enhancements and other

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) has announced a groundbreaking new Transitional Living, Rapid Re-housing, and Homeless Prevention Program for transitional aged youth (18-24 years old) that are currently homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless in South Lake Tahoe. This homeless prevention program is a one-time block grant funded by the Homeless Emergency Aid Program (HEAP) and will be available to our community over the next two years.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tuesday's City Council meeting will include several items including a closed session at 8:00 a.m. that includes Liberty Utilities' claim that a City snowplow damaged a light pole, causing $56,883.41 in damage.

During their meeting this week, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board directed its staff to move ahead with due diligence for their nine asset lands in Meyers. Of the Conservancy’s nearly 4,700 properties in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Conservancy has designated 17 properties as asset lands that could support sustainable compact development consistent with local area plans and the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Memo of Understanding (MOU) to show the cooperative and constructive intent to build affordable housing between the City of South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Transportation District, Pacific Development Group and United Housing Corporation was to be voted on during Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Last week, a local motel owner told guests there would be no housekeeping because they didn’t have enough staff due to the local housing shortage. However, the issue is fast becoming not only one of supply, but also one of quality. Many homes that fit the "local's" price range are older buildings - built in the 1970s or earlier. Just like our roads, some of these older buildings are in a state of disrepair and as we know with our roads, patchwork repairs only last so long.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most have seen the blue and gold placards attached to trees on lots around Lake Tahoe, signifying the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) owns that piece of property.

CTC currently owns nearly 4,700 of these labeled parcels comprising around 6,500 acres around Lake Tahoe. Over 4,300 of these parcels are environmentally sensitive, leaving 331 parcels as "asset lands."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Perhaps you know of them as mother-in-law units, tiny houses in the backyard or an extra apartment above a garage for renters. The term Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) has become a popular one in describing these types of housing as the affordable housing conversation turns towards solutions.

- ADUs are an affordable type of home to construct in California because they do not require paying for land, major new infrastructure, structured parking, or elevators.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has been a lot of activity at the future home of Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) on Al Tahoe Boulevard, with foundations in and buildings taking shape. When completed it will feature one rehabilitation center and 12 cages/buildings.

By October, seven of those cages will be completed and LTWC will celebrate with a grand opening.

At its meeting yesterday, and following a tour of the properties, the Conservancy Board directed staff to begin pre-sale activities for the two parcels: 8602 North Lake Boulevard and 8644 Speckled Avenue. Potential opportunities for the parcels could include new affordable housing or mixed-use development, as well as improvements for people walking and riding bicycles, water quality improvement projects, and placement of conservation easements over sensitive open space.

The award-winning newspaper, in its seventh year of publication, strives to provide residents, visitors, and policymakers with information about protecting, enjoying and exploring the Lake Tahoe Basin.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is taking a first, big step toward helping address the lack of affordable student housing in the community by leasing a five-unit apartment building near Ski Run Blvd.

The college's trustees gave authority to school administration to sign a five-year lease with the owner of that apartment building during their meeting Tuesday evenings. The lease starts on July 2, 2019.

The Barton Foundation will be awarding $50,000 in grant funding to improve community health across the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. As part of Barton Health’s commitment to community health and collaboration, these annual grants provides funding for programs and services that positively impact the health of the local community. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting May 25, 2019, there will be no more youth staying in the Placerville Juvenile Detention Facility. After a decision by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors in February, South Lake Tahoe's Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) will be the only youth facility in the county to serve those in the justice system 18-years-old and younger, for now.

There are several reasons for the changes including an aging facility, increasing costs and the fact that fewer youth are working their way through the juvenile justice system.
