Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (Tahoe Chamber) is hosting a candidate forum on October 4 for candidates running for South Lake Tahoe City Council. Three City Council member seats are up for election, which includes those held by incumbents, and candidates, Wendy David, Tom Davis and Austin Sass. All nine candidates are confirmed to attend.

The forum will be held in the Lake Tahoe Community College Board Room from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Everyone knows what goes downhill, but the South Tahoe Public Utility District knows how to recycle it into 381,000 kilowatts of electricity per year. A recent feature article by the Association of California Water Agencies pointed out that STPUD is one of only a handful of utility districts in the entire world that can claim 100% reuse of wastewater and bio solids. Here’s how. We use centrifuges instead of the usual pollution causing burners. That allows us to make fertilizer for ranch land.

I am writing to you as a follow-up to my letter of May 12, 2018 (see at end of story) regarding Policy Priorities and Issues for City Government.

Quality and Affordable Housing for Residents is Very Important

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Public comment closes this week on plans released by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) that address issues the agency is facing to be sustainable. Major changes are in store for riders.

Four plans were created as bus service cannot continue as it currently is due to several factors, including the cost of fleet replacement and improvement, funding availability and forecasted funds, regulatory compliance, and keeping and attracting drivers and staff.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless has announced they are hosting the Tahoe Beach Bash, featuring the 4th annual Homebrew for the Homeless on Saturday, July 28 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Tahoe Beach Retreat and Lodge in South Lake Tahoe.

This family-friendly event, presented by Tahoe Beach Retreat, features live music, homebrew beer competition, lakeside BBQ, bounce house, local vendors, child-friendly obstacle course, and other entertaining activities for people of all ages.

He's been on the job for a few weeks, meeting with staff and getting to know the ropes in South Lake Tahoe, but Dirk Brazil's employment contract for the interim city manager position was officially approved at Tuesday's City Council meeting, his first official day on the job.

I don’t typically endorse political candidates, but with the serious issues facing El Dorado County and the need for good leadership in our Supervisor, I’m going to break my own rule in support of Jeffrey Spencer.

While Jeffrey Spencer’s name is not as well known around town as the other candidates, Jeffrey and his family have ties to our community that go back decades. He purchased his home ten years ago with plans to retire here, and has lived here full time for five years. His two sons have attended the Middle School and South Tahoe High.

Recently retired from the City of Davis, Dirk Brazil has been selected to become the City of South Lake Tahoe's interim city manager starting June 5.

Even though he doesn't start officially until next month, Brazil has been in town meeting with various stakeholders and getting to know the city.

He said a lot of things in a city are the same, departments and their functions are similar, but each one has its own issues.

One thing is certain, something has to change or there will not be enough money to operate buses around the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. What isn't certain is how those changes will look, where extra funding can come from, or if services will have to be cut.

During Friday's Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) board meeting, options to keep a sustainable transit system in place for Lake Tahoe were discussed. Buses continue to operate at a loss and that cannot continue, according to the TTD staff.

The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) has announced the non-profit organizations on the South Shore who have been selected to receive grants in the amount of $68,000.

During their 2018 grant cycle, over 25 organizations applied for grants and 13 of them are being supported by TWCF and will be honored during their Grants Gala
on Wednesday, May 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

David Alan McClure passed away from multiple organ failure at Renown Hospital on February 24, 2018.

He was the first born child of Charles and Florence Engstrom McClure in Martinez, Calif., on October 7, 1050. Soon after, they moved to San Francisco, they lived in the student housing quonset huts while Charles got his teaching degree. Four years later they moved to San Anselmo, in Marin County, where the family lived in an Asian pagoda style home until 2016.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe will be closing for the season on Sunday, April 1, 2018. They opened on Christmas Eve inside the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church as they had trouble securing a place for the winter.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The first two "Let's Have a Conversation" being held by Mayor Wendy David were very popular, with many citizens stopping by to voice concerns, listen and discuss solutions. All future meetings will have a focus so the mayor can bring the right departments with her to the table.

The next conversation is set for Wednesday, March 21 and will be focused on housing issues, including permitting processes and the Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Ordinance.

Two pressing issues in Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada are problems encountered by cities throughout the country, affordable housing and homelessness, and a student at Western Nevada College believes he has a viable solution.

Western Nevada College (WNC) student Masih Madani is devoted to seeing these two issues addressed by constructing tiny houses from out-of-circulation shipping containers. The 320-square-foot galvanized steel containers can be stacked side by side, as well as on top of each other, creating a variety of housing possibilities.

The Community Action Council of El Dorado County is seeking an individual or agency to represent the interests and concerns of low-income people/families living in El Dorado County, with special attention on housing, nutrition and low-income program needs. The El Dorado County Community Action Council is looking to fill a vacancy on the Council within the Low-Income Sector Membership category. The Council meets monthly in Placerville.

"Instead of trying to find a way to eliminate the homeless, we now have the ability to change homelessness with a new approach - and it is working," said El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Macras.

The 14th annual Holiday With a Hero campaign culminated Wednesday in Carson City at Walmart after months of fundraising. At least 240 homeless children from across the Carson City School District met with Santa Claus before being paired with first responder heroes for a Christmas shopping spree.

In their annual reorganization, the South Lake Tahoe City Council has voted in a new mayor and mayor pro tem for the year 2018.

Wendy David returns as mayor, a position she held in 2016. She was mayor pro tem during 2017.

Tom Davis returns as vice mayor for the fifth time.

"I want to thank the Council for your support," said Mayor David. "I want to look at how we want to move forward and focus on community conversation. It's what brings us together. Community conversation is the most important thing we'll do next year."
