UPDATE 5:57PM: Fire crews have knocked down the Topsy Fire and are mopping up hotspots, according to fire officials. The cause of the fire is under investigation. It was noted that there were a number of lightning strikes in the area shortly before the fire started.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you were planning on setting off fireworks around Lake Tahoe this 4th of July, you can forget about it. They are illegal around the lake and in neighboring counties. A mild winter and a large amount of forest fuels put the area at a high risk of fire this summer, and fireworks could be devastating.

Without the official fireworks shows at the north and south ends of the lake, many fear people will resort to the fireworks bought at roadside stands and Indian reservations. While those are legal in the areas they are sold, they are not legal at Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was another earthquake Saturday night in the Carson Valley in the same location as Friday's magnitude 4.5.

On Saturday at 7:53 p.m., an earthquake measured 3.51 and is in the area 4.1 mi SSE of Carson_City near Indian Hills. It was 9.80 km below the surface.

This earthquake is one in a series of over 80 aftershocks since Friday night. Most were very small and under magnitude 2.1 before Saturday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a 5.0 earthquake Friday night centered in Indian Hills, Nevada, just east of Lake Tahoe. First reports have it measured at 5.0.

No reports are in yet for the 6:33 p.m. earthquake and this story will be updated.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Effective the end of November, the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) is ending an agreement with Alpine County regarding its recycled water operations.

STPUD has paid Alpine County an annual mitigation fee to address potential impacts caused by recycled water for 35 years, a fee that is approximately $100,000 per year.

STPUD says there have not been adverse impacts from the recycled water operations and the agreement is no longer necessary.

The following is a list of road projects underway by Caltrans around the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding highways of the Sierra.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Alpine Watershed Group Meeting will be holding a public meeting on the West Fork Carson River Vision Project on Tuesday, September 10, 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Authorities are testing water and algae in the Kiva Beach area after a man reported the death of his dog after allegedly being in Lake Tahoe behind Tallac Historic Site a week ago.

The death of the dog came to the attention of Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board late Wednesday, August 21. The following day they were joined by the El Dorado County Environmental Health Department along the stretch of beach the dog's owner said they were at the previous Sunday. They spoke with the owner and retraced their steps that day.

7:30 p.m. Monday: The campground is reopening this evening. Just over 21 acres have been burned according to the Sierra Dispatch Center.

There is a wildland fire burning in Alpine County off Airport Road west of Indian Creek Reservoir.

The Alpine County Sheriff's office has evacuated Indian Creek Campground as a precaution and the recreation area is closed until further notice. Airport Road is closed from SR89 to Diamond Valley Road.

At this time there is no cause known and the size of the fire has not been released.

Two male subjects were involved in a shooting in North Douglas County late Saturday night in the Indian Hills area south of Carson City, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. Both are receiving medical care at this time.

No law enforcement officers were involved in the shooting. No arrests have been made at this time. There are no outstanding suspects nor is there any threats to our community. This is still an open investigation, according to DCSO Undersheriff Ron Elges.

In anticipation of poor driving conditions and a blizzard warning in South Lake Tahoe, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District has closed schools for Monday, February 4, 2019.

Washoe County schools in Lake Tahoe at Incline Village are taking a digital day.

Douglas County schools at the lake have a snow day (ZCES and GWHS).

All Tahoe Truckee schools and offices are closed today.

Lake Tahoe Community College is closed.

The Alpine Watershed Group is hosting an educational rock talk by David Griffith and
Peggy Ristorcelli, "Alpine County, Where It Came From and How It Formed: A Short Geologic History of the Last 175 Million Years,” at their bim-onthly group meeting on November 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

STATELINE, Nev. - Nine projects were honored as "Best in the Basin" Wednesday during the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board meeting.

For 28 years TRPA's program has showcased projects around the lake that demonstrate exceptional planning, implementation, and compatibility with Tahoe’s natural environment and communities.

The Best in Basin award winners:

California's State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson is wrapping up his final term by touring some of the state's schools.

In just a few days he went from visiting a school in Los Angeles with an enrollment of 4,000 to touring Alpine County Schools and the Diamond Valley Elementary School campus, in particular, which has 80 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

“It is a small school in numbers but mighty in its focus and learning,” said Torlakson in Alpine County on Sept. 20.

9:14 p.m. update: The James Loop Fire was reported at 12:45 p.m. at the James Canyon Development near Carson City, Nevada. Tonight, the fire was mapped at 260 acres and is currently 30 percent contained. The fire was caused by heavy equipment working on a new home under construction The fire burned 163 acres of private and 107 acres of Bureau of Indian Affairs lands, but threatened lands
managed by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The East Fork Fire Protection District was in unified command with the U.S. Forest Service.

An American Indian tribe with deep roots in the Lake Tahoe basin is seeking to reclaim land that’s part of a Nevada resort area.

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California wants to ask Congress for nearly 375 acres of federal land in Incline Village.

The property includes land that’s part of Diamond Peak Ski Resort and along fairways at Incline Village Championship Golf Course.

Tribal chairman Neil Mortimer made the request as part of an effort by Washoe County to shift thousands of acres from federal to private or local government ownership.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two examples of the newest tools in the fire fighting toolbox stopped by Lake Tahoe Airport on Tuesday to show how they can help in the Sierra, just as they do across the country.

Dauntless Air out of Appleton, Minnesota brought two Air Tractor AT-802F Fire Boss planes to town at the request of the United States Forest Service (USFS) and put on a demonstration for South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, CalFire and the USFS from both Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe National Forest.

I had the pleasure of fishing with Mike and Tom Blotter. We were on the lake at 6 a.m. and had lines in the water right at the precise moment of opening day. Overnight fire conditions were very active on several fronts forcing additional
evacuations across Northern California. Firefighters are battling 22 large
wildfires that have burned nearly 170,000 acres. Firefighters are bracing for
