Mammoth Lakes added to state's monitoring list; Truckee/North Lake Tahoe ask visitors to stay away on weekends

To help stop the spread of the coronavirus, California Governor Gavin Newsom has added more counties to his "watch list," those showing concerning trends in rates of COVID-19. This list now numbers 37 which makes up 93 percent of the state's population. There are 58 counties in the state.

New on that list are Mono County (home to Mammoth Mountain) and Santa Cruz County, a popular tourist destination. North Lake Tahoe is in Placer County which was added to the list earlier this month.

Current status of fires burning in Northern California and Nevada

Smoke from fires west of Lake Tahoe is expected to come into the basin again today, but Sunday morning is clear. Here is an update on most fires in Northern California and Western Nevada.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Spooner Lake is home to over 100 different species of wildflowers. Join a wildflower expert for a leisurely two-mile walk around the lake to learn about plant names, uses, habitats and to enjoy their beauty. Park entrance fees are waived for event attendees.

Crews clearing seasonally closed Sierra passes, some opening dates projected

Snow, rocks, boulders, trees and debris are being cleared from roads through the Sierra Nevada that have been closed all winter. Caltrans crews from Districts 9 and 10 are plowing through several feet of snow in some area. While some roads will be opening soon, many have a lot of work to be done before they can open to traffic.

Crews will inspect the road, bridges, culverts to make sure the road is safe for the public before reopening. They will also replace signs that tumbled during the winter.

Three men missing after boat capsizes on June Lake

Mono County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has suspended the search for three men who have been missing in June Lake since their boat capsized on Saturday.

At about 10:00 a.m., a boat carrying five male passengers overtuned. Two of the men were able to swim to shore but the other men have not been found.

The men were vacationing at June Lake, and went out to fish Saturday morning. It is reported that they are from the town of Tehachapi, Calif.

South Lake Tahoe man injured, Wellington woman killed in Kingsbury Grade collision

Kingsbury Grade was closed for several hours Friday after a collision between a motorhome and a Nissan Pathfinder sent several victims to area hospitals and resulted in the death of one of the drivers.

At 1:30 p.m., the two vehicles collided about 1.5 miles down from the summit on the valley side of the road. One person from each vehicle had to be extricated according to Fire Marshall Eric Guevin of Tahoe Douglas Fire Department.

Care Flight landed at the bottom of Kingsbury Grade to transport the victims.

Owens River Fire sending smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin

9/19/16 update 8:00 p.m. - The Owens River Fire has now burned 6,050 acres east of Highway 395 and is now 20 percent contained. The fire is burning southeast of June Lake and northeast of Mammoth Lake.

Owens River Fire in Mono County jumps to 4,500 acres; 10% contained

9:00 a.m. update 9/18: The Owens River Fire burning east of Highway 395 and north of Owens River Road in Mono County has exploded to an estimated 4,500 acres. Even with the growth, firefighter were able to get it 10% contained.

Named the Owens River Fire, it is burning in sagebrush and Jeffrey pine.

Olympic and X-Games medalists Jamie Anderson and Maddie Bowman, both from the Meyers/South Lake Tahoe area, have received nominations to their sports' 2016-2017 teams.

Graniteman Challenge celebrates sixth grueling year in Mono County

One of the state’s greatest athletic challenges returns for a sixth year September 11-13 in a competition that’s as tough as granite.

The Graniteman Challenge, sponsored by the High Sierra Triathlon Club, is a unique three-day combination of the Granite to Granite Swim, a 2.4-mile swim in June Lake on Friday, September 11, the Mammoth Gran Fondo, a 102-mile bike ride on Saturday, September 12 and the Tioga Pass Run, a 12.4-mile run up Tioga Pass on Sunday, September 13.

Walker Fire burns 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained

8 p.m. update 8/18/15:

The Walker Fire has now burned 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained. It has been determined that the fire is human caused and is under investigation.

There are 484 firefighters working on the fire along with 4 helicopters, 2 Air tankers, 34 Engines, 10 Crews, 6 Water Tenders, and 4 Dozers.

235 structures remain threatened but none have burned so far.

Sierra passes opening for season

State Route 108 over Sonora Pass has opened in time for the opening of trout fishing season in the Eastern Sierra on Saturday, April 25 according to Caltrans.

Also opening is State Route 120 (west) Mono County - Tioga Pass Road, to the East Yosemite Park Entrance Gate. State Route 120 is closed beyond this point. Users can access State Route 120 for recreational activities from the junction of US 395 at Lee Vining up to the park entrance closure gate.

State Route 168 (west) Inyo County – Access to Sabrina Lake is also now open.

Big fish caught at Lake Tahoe

The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.

June Lake reacts to resort closure

There is no shortage of gloom in June Lake.
When Mammoth Mountain Ski Area announced last week (June 21) that it would close down the June Mountain ski area at least until the end of the 2012-13 ski season, the reaction was swift and tense.
"I think it’s been pretty clear the entire eight years since I was elected that this is exactly what I have been working to avoid,” said June Lake’s county supervisor, Vikki Bauer.

Mammoth Mountain shuts down June Lake resort; summer plans scaled back, 2012-13 ski season gone

June Mountain Ski Area on Thursday suspended its operations for the foreseeable future, according to a Mammoth Mountain press release as reported in the Mammoth Times.

With the ski and board season winding down, it’s almost time to catch some fish in the High Sierra once again.
On Saturday, April 28 the 2012 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in California. The season will then remain open until Thursday, Nov. 15.
