The UCCE Master Gardeners of South Lake Tahoe are having part one (vegetables only) of their 4th annual Plant Sale this Friday, June 9 at the Ski Run Farmers Market from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., or until they sell out of plants. The sale is being held jointly with the Sierra House Elementary School who will be selling student crafted garden art.

Summer programs offered by the City of South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Department will be the focus of a kick-off party on Saturday, June 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Recreation & Swim Complex.

They are gearing up for another summer season full of adventure, learning, fun and great memories. The event is free and designed to highlight summer programs, introduce recreation instructors and provide tours of the complex in a fun and festive environment.

Looking for a fun activity for kids this summer where they get to experience activities from the past, learn a new skill, play games and use their imagination? They'll be learning without being in a classroom.

Children are encouraged to use their imaginations as they are introduced to new skills and traditional games from the past. By applying their new skills,
children will create projects and games they can take home and share with their family and friends.

It wasn't your typical high school class at Tahoe Forest Hospital Wednesday. Approximately 60 students enrolled in advanced placement biology and human body systems classes scrubbed in to witness a total knee replacement surgery on a cadaver in the University of Nevada's advanced surgical lab at their North Shore location.

Four hundred Douglas County middle school students toured Minden-Tahoe Airport last week. Students had the opportunity to learn about how airplanes and airports work and how they might someday be involved in aviation. The organizers of the four day program calculated that more than 38 people volunteered some 350 hours in order to make this program a success.

"I love Tahoe," Olympic Gold medalist Kristen Armstrong said as she greeted South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) students on Wednesday. "You're lucky to have the mountains and the lake."

Armstrong, a four-time Olympian and three-time gold medalist stopped by two South Lake Tahoe schools (South Tahoe Middle School and Sierra House Elementary) to meet with students and deliver a message.

Members of the California Teacher's Association (CTA) and California Federation of Teachers (CFT) across the state brought out the posters and wore red on May 1 to advocate for public education and immigrant students.

South Lake Tahoe teachers joined in and greeted parents and students as they arrived for school Monday, displaying posters and letting students know they all had a right to quality and free public education, and asking all to take the pledge (as seen below).

Western Nevada College (WNC) in Carson City has now made it easier for busy adults to carve out time in their lives to pursue a higher education. They have added a number of classes, degrees and certificates of achievement that students can complete online.

The addition of online offerings enables individuals seeking to advance their education the ability to do so while maintaining their personal commitments to work and/or family.

Choices for Children hosted its 25th annual Child Care Professionals Appreciation Breakfast featuring Early Childhood Education professors Lisa Daly and Miriam Beloglovsky on Saturday, April 1 at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Fifty four child care providers came together to enjoy breakfast, raffles generously donated by the South Lake Tahoe Community, and an inspiring presentation on Using Loose Parts (alluring objects that children can move, manipulate, control, and change within their play) to Support Language and Literacy Development.

South Tahoe High School is still an accredited school. That was the message given during Tuesday's meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees as staff updated them on their ongoing efforts to hit the targets set for the next visit by Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) in March of 2018.

Several parents have voiced their concerns that students aren't getting in the colleges of their choice due to the school's status.

Choices for Children and the City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Services hosted Day of the Young Child on Saturday March 11, 2017. Twenty-seven agencies came together to offer a wide variety of early childhood activities including art, sensory activities and physical activities. Children enjoyed face painting, beading, painting, play
dough, planting, rock climbing, paper collages, chalk art, Pequeños Rascal Learning Center dancers and more. It truly was a lively day for families to connect and get information on community resources.

Pequeños Rascals Daycare has moved into a new center in South Lake Tahoe after operating at a local home for 15 years. Filling a big need on the South Shore, the owners are offering quality care for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children up to age 13.

It's not just babysitting either. It's care with a heavy emphasis on education, music, art, physical activity and family.

The public is invited to see for themselves when Pequeños holds an open house on Saturday, March 18 from noon to 5:00 p.m. They are located at 3336 Sandy Way in South Lake Tahoe.

The next Tahoe Chamber "Connect for a Cause" mixer will be a joint event with the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals on March 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

Connect for a Cause: Mixed Up Mixer is a great opportunity for both memberships to mix & mingle with one another while learning how these local organizations benefit the South Shore community.

This social event will include tasty appetizers, 1 drink ticket, and a door prize from each organization. It is free for members and $20 for non-members.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) wants families to know that, no matter what their immigration status is, South Lake Tahoe schools are a safe zone and all students are provided access to education.

Community members spoke before LTUSD trustees Tuesday, showing their support for all families and students in the district in light of President Trump's focus on immigrants. They asked the Board to take a strong and public stance against hate and to openly proclaim schools to be safe for all students, no matter their color, religion, nationality or immigration status.

It’s been great seeing all of my friends and acquaintances who have lived here for less than 10 years posting photos and sharing how Snowmageddon 2017 has blown them away. I did the same when I first moved to Tahoe back in the 70’s and storms like this were not uncommon. Back then playing was more important than clearing the snow. I had a big Dodge Ram 4x4 pickup and I j drove over the snow in my driveway and packed it down. I did not own a snowblower and can’t remember shoveling much. One year the packed snow was so high I could not get the truck under the carport.

Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed Wednesday January 11 due to power outages, severe weather, and continuing road condition issues.

The college wants to assure students that they will work with them to make up lost days of school, but their safety comes first.

"While we are very concerned about the loss of student learning this week, we have to be more concerned about the safety of our students, faculty, and staff," said LTCC President Kindred Murillo. "The decision maker was the City of South Lake Tahoe issuing a request for community members to stay off the roads."

Fifth-grade teachers may reserve a spot for the 2017 Winter Trek Conservation Education program starting Monday, December 12. This program, offered by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, is led by USFS rangers and community volunteers and gives students an outdoor winter ecology learning experience that takes place on snowshoes.

The four finalists for the position of Lake Tahoe Community College's Superintendent/President have been announced, and the public will have the opportunity to meet them in a forum on November 17 in the school's Aspen Board room at 9:00 a.m.

This is a critical School Board election. It is important that our future Board continue the great work our present Board has completed over the last decade. So, it is imperative that Larry Reilly be elected as LTUSD School Board Trustee for Area #1. There is a great deal of work that needs to be done in our district. There are important decisions that need to be made. Our schools and our community need practical, tough, experienced leadership to support Dr. Tarwater in his continuing efforts to make LTUSD a great district for our children.

Learn how forest health and fuels management activities in the Lake Tahoe Basin create effective community protection from wildfire during a free tour on Saturday, November 5 in South Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Those attending will get an in-depth perspective of forest management and what it means to reside within a Fire Adapted Community.

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District in partnership with local fire districts, and other agencies has established the Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities program to educate people on wildfire preparedness.

With several state parks around the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding Sierra Nevada, budding Van Goghs have a lot of local experience to draw upon as they enter the California State Park Foundation's art contest, "Discover State Parks."

Since the parks offer endless opportunities for inspiration, the Youth Art Contest is a way for young people to draw on those experiences to create art featuring their encounters with wildlife and nature, learning about history and culture or enjoying recreation.

The first South Tahoe Middle School convention was complete with delegates, platforms, debates and slates. Every state was represented and the students spent the day Friday much as a participant at the national convention would.

Since the school year began, teachers James Seider and Andrew Losk have been teaching their eighth grade students about civic responsibilities and duties, what it means to be a citizen of the United States and about the political process.
