It’s time to sign up for the South Tahoe Babe Ruth 2020 season!

Last year, all three of the South Tahoe Babe Ruth All-Star age divisions were Nevada State Champions. Now its time to start the new season and tryouts are scheduled for March 22 and 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Depending on weather, tryouts will be held at Todd Fields or South Tahoe High School.

Babe Ruth is a recreational baseball league serving players born on or before August 31, 2007 and have aged out of Little League. Everyone plays.

South Tahoe Little League holds final registration day, junior umpire training and clinics Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - This is a big weekend for South Tahoe Little League.

On Sunday, March 1, it is AAA and Majors Warm-Up Clinic in the South Tahoe High School Gym. Go "knock off some rust" before player evaluations on March 15 and 22 (reserve time for those two dates here).

The AAA players clinic will run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and Majors will hold theirs from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

South Lake Tahoe Little League signups now underway

Ready to play ball? It is less than two months until spring but it is already time to sign up for the South Tahoe National Little League.

Children eligible to play must be born between September 1, 2007 and December 31, 2015.

Victim in fiery South Lake Tahoe crash remembered

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a day like any other for Daniel Noah Peterson. A trip to deliver fuel to South Lake Tahoe gas stations before heading home for the night. Doing a job he loved to do.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Play Ball! There is still a few feet on top of the baseball diamonds but its never too early to plan baseball tryouts.

Player evaluations/tryouts will be held in March and those playing have to choose one of the following dates. Arrive 30- 45 minutes prior to the listed start time to sign in and warm up:

Friday, March 15 (sign-ins will start at 5 p.m. this day) - 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 16 - 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Sunday, March 17 - 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

John Thiel: New man at the helm of South Tahoe Public Utility District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Richard Solbrig told the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors he was retiring in January 2019 after 29 years with the agency the hunt was on for a new general manager.

It turned out they didn't have to look far.

John Thiel had been hired by Solbrig in 1992 as a staff engineer and he worked his way up through the ranks over the last 27 years until the Board chose him as the new general manager.

Letter: Ms. Lisa Maloff’s lesson to South Lake Tahoe

In an ever more vitriolic, self-centered and money hungry culture, the magnificent moments appear to be farther and fewer between. However, in Tahoe, a constant bright spot has been found over the past several years with Ms. Lisa Maloff’s numerous charitable donations. Illustrated by the exhaustive list below, it is overwhelming to envision the impact she has had on our little community. And, while most would argue that the money has all the power to change everything, I disagree.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested in Sonoma County

Michael Lindauer, 34, of South Lake Tahoe, was arrested in Sonoma, Calif., on March 17 on charges of felony grand theft, giving false ID to a peace officer, possession of stolen property and shoplifting. He is currently in the county jail in Santa Rosa on $15,000 bail after being discovered with stolen property including keys to 16 different vehicles.

On Saturday, March 17, Sonoma police received a call about a subject who stole a key from a vehicle on First Street East near the Little League fields.

Rainbow Sprinkles to reopen in South Lake Tahoe

Have you missed your dose of doughnuts and frozen yogurt? No longer do you have to wait as Rainbow Sprinkles is reopening at the Y in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, January 16 at 6:00 a.m.

After their first year in business the owners closed for a couple of weeks to make some changes and are now excited to see the customers they've missed.

"We love our customers and can't wait to see them again!" said co-owner Salli Ross-Filgo. "We wanted to say how grateful we are to this community for their support. We have had the honor of serving so many wonderful people."

New member appointed to Lake Valley Fire Board of Directors

The Lake Valley Fire Protection District Board of Directors has appointed Brian Hogan as a board member-at-large, replacing the seat recently vacated by Robert Rossi.

Hogan is the Regional President for U.S. Bank's Central California and Northern Nevada Community Banking Region and has been employed with the bank for the last 25 years. As regional president, he oversees the banking groups in the region including Commercial, Retail, Business Banking, and Private Banking. He holds Bachelor of Science degrees in both Economics and Government from California State University Sacramento.

Dodgeball Tournament to raise funds for family of DCSO Investigator

To help one of their own, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) and community members are holding a Dodgeball Tournament fundraiser on September 10 at Sierra Lutheran High School at 1:00 p.m.

DCSO Investigator Nate Almeida and his wife Jen learned their son Trent had B-Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in April of this year. Last week, the family received good new when bone marrow test results show no leukemia. Trent is now undergoing a 100-day cycle of chemotherapy and undergoing the next phase of treatment to keep those negative test results.

City Council gives LTUSD $75,000 for fields; Asks they come back to consortium

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dr. James Tarwarter, Superintendent of Lake Tahoe Unified School District, was at Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting to explain why LTUSD should receive $150,000 from the City for ballfield maintenance. He walked away with $75,000 with a strong recommendation that he join the Community Field Consortium Tarwater chose not to join in November, 2015.

Kenneth Carl Rollston 1944 - 2017

Kenneth Carl Rollston died on January 3, 2017 while on a trip to Monterey.

He is survived by his wife Nancy Carpenter Rollston; his sisters Joanne, Garol, Lynne, and Marci; his sons Jim and Brian and their wives Keri and Viktoria; Nancy's sons Christopher and Erik and their wives Yvonne and Andrea; and six grandchildren on whom he doted: Ryland and Kaj, Zane and Miranda, and Griffin and Maggie.

STHS student's senior project shows him how to give back through sports

Seniors at South Tahoe High School must pick something to do for their senior project, a requirement of graduation, one that pushes them to do something different and unfamiliar. Some students learn to play a guitar, while others do stand up comedy. And some students like Ethan Strain, learn how to give back to their community and work with children.

The students must select an advisor for their project, someone who knows the chosen subject and can guide the student to a successful completion.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary gives out community awards

Each year the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club holds their signature fundraiser, the St. Patrick's Day Celebration, and because of this they are able to give away tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships, grants and gifts to members of the community.

On Friday, local non-profits were handed the fruits of the Rotarian's labor at their annual community donation day.

Controversy surrounds elimination of "God" and "Country" from South Tahoe Little League pledge

The National Little League pledge, written by Peter J. McGovern in 1954, reads as follows:

I trust in God
I love my country
And will respect its laws
I will play fair
And strive to win
But win or lose
I will always do my best

It has long been a tradition in South Lake Tahoe where players recite the pledge prior to every Major Division Little League game.

That tradition ended this year as the local Board of Directors decided to remove the words "God" and "country" from the pledge so it would read like this:

I will play fair
And strive to win
But win or lose

South Lake Tahoe Little League's Opening Day festivities snowed out

A late season snow caused the South Tahoe Little League's opening ceremonies to be delayed one week.

The same schedule will be followed on Saturday, May 2 at the South Tahoe Little League Complex located on Rufus Allen Blvd.

An Opening Day celebration is planned at the South Tahoe Little League Complex this Saturday, April 25th. A parade and ribbon cutting ceremony are planned prior to the start of scheduled games. The parade will start on the street next to the South Tahoe Middle School tennis courts at 9:00 a.m. with a planned parade path to follow Lyons Avenue to Rufus Allen, and into the major’s field by way of the snack shack entrance. Parking will not be available at South Tahoe Middle School due to the eWaste collection event. Parking is available along Rufus Allen Blvd.

First Responder Community Hero Award: Ross Molesworth

Tahoe Douglas Rotary has been a part of the South Shore community since 1962, and, as are the other 1.2 million Rotarians in the world, are bound by a commong purpose, Service Above Self. The club felt it was an ideal fit to recognize police and fire professionals in the community who make sacrifies every day to serve and protect.
During the week, South Tahoe Now will highlight each of this year's winners of the inagural First Responder Community Hero Award.

There is one more chance to tryout for South Tahoe National Little League AAA or Majors Division. They will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Here are the details:

WHO: All players aged eight to 12 wishing to play AAA or Majors must try out. This includes players returning to these divisions, as this year is a re-draft.

Las Vegas Little League team national champs after Chicago team disqualified

A Little League team that captured the attention of the nation and the hearts of its hometown was stripped of its national title Wednesday after an investigation revealed that team officials had falsified boundaries so they could add ineligible players to the roster.

Only last summer, the all-black Jackie Robinson West team was the toast of Chicago and was honored with trips to San Francisco and to the White House.

South Tahoe baseball program fundraising for new scoreboard

There has been a lot of work completed on the baseball fields in South Lake Tahoe, including a new diamond for local little league teams. One needed item wasn't on the list of projects completed with Measure S funds was replacing the old and broken scoreboard so a fundraising effort has begun to replace it.

South Tahoe High varsity baseball coach Starbuck Teevan started a GoFundMe page in order to help with the $18,500 needed for a new scoreboard.

South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association hosts 5th annual K9 Trials

The South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association will host the 5th annual K9 Trials on Sept. 21-22 in South Lake Tahoe. It is anticipated that 50 K9 teams from police departments throughout California and Nevada will compete in the competition. The narcotics trials will be held on Friday, September 21 at the Royal Valhalla Motor lodge at 2pm. The City of South Lake Tahoe is pleased to announce a promotional ceremony for three new Fire Department Shift Commanders will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011. The ceremony will take place at the City’s Administration Offices (South Lake Tahoe Airport) at 2:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Being promoted to Shift Commander are Jim Drennan, Rob Hembree and Dan Sullivan. In announcing the appointments, City Manager Tony O’Rourke said, “The three Commanders will have significant responsibilities and have demonstrated the capacity to carry them out. We are pleased to announce their promotions.”
