An Artist Shows “What Remains” at Bona Fide HQ May 5

On Sat. May 5, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 p.m. Bona Fide Books will host an art reception for local photographer and writer Stacy Hicks, featuring her collection “What Remains.” Free and open to the public, the exhibit will feature 16 black and white images. Refreshments will be served.

Hicks, who lives in Strawberry, CA with her son, says that her photographs reveal the things that people often don’t see, and this is what she finds most interesting in her subjects. She favors black and white film, because “It’s more honest.”

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency has announced the schedule of presentations for the Regional Plan Update rollout taking place at two upcoming Governing Board meetings on April 25 and 26.
The plan update contains five draft documents for the public, partner agencies and decision makers to review at a minimum for the next two months. Public discussions about the Update will continue through the year, with the Board expected to take final action on the plan by the end of 2012. In an effort to impact the health of our community the Barton Foundation recently opened their grant opportunities for programs and organizations benefitting the South Lake Tahoe area. Barton Health Grants provide funding for programs targeted at underserved populations and/or providing great impact to the health status of the community. The total grant amount available for 2012 is set at $25,000 and is generally dispersed between five and 10 local organizations.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews continue prescribed fire operations on Kingsbury Grade near Andria Drive the week of April 16, 2012. Operations may continue through the end of the week, weather and conditions permitting.
Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from this prescribed fire project area. The Forest Service strives to minimize the impacts of smoke on local communities. It is official. Kirkwood Mountain Resort is now officially under the umbrella of ski industry giant Vail Resorts, Inc.

The existing 2 percent Transient Occupancy Tax, which is up for renewal on the June 5, 2012 ballot, has funded a number of North Lake Tahoe public improvement projects and services since voters first authorized it in 1996.

The renewal, called Measure F, is not a tax increase and, if passed, would continue to be paid by lodging guests only via the TOT bed tax when they spend the night in North Lake Tahoe. North Lake Tahoe residents would not be taxed under Measure F.

Authorities have arrested a Carmichael, Calif., man suspected in the 1980 South Lake Tahoe gas station robbery and murder of 16-year-old Richard Swanson.
After nearly 32 years, On March 28, Andrew Sanford, 50, was arrested and booked in the Sacramento County Jail for the alleged murder of Swanson. The robbery and homicide happened on Aug. 14, 1980 in South Lake Tahoe at what was then the Shell Gas Station located at the “Y” on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road. Details of the case have been kept tightly under wraps.

Spring is in the air at Lake Tahoe, and Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California and Kirkwood Mountain Resort are gearing up for spring skiing and riding with concerts, competitions and new snow. The three resorts each received between 12-21 inches of snow since Saturday, March 31, and March snowfall totals range from 110-146 inches.
