Kudos: Tahoe Warm Room thanks Alpine Carpet One

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank Alpine Carpet One for their support. In December, TCH opened the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room for the winter 2016-17 season. Alpine Carpet One was a generous supporter not only of our fall fundraiser but by donating carpet for our space. This donation helps keep our guests experiencing homelessness more comfortable in the Warm Room. The Warm Room plans to remain open through early April.

In the last two years, the number of Med-Cal recipients in South Lake Tahoe has doubled. El Dorado County receives $20,136,379 in federal funding each year and without this money our working families who would not be able to afford health care services.

Dear Community,

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank Caesar’s Foundation and Harrah’s & Harvey’s Lake Tahoe for their support. In September the Caesar’s Foundation awarded TCH with a $10,000 grant to operate the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room. These funds will help provide overnight refuge from the elements to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the winter months. Additionally, the Harrah’s Employees Reaching Out (HEROs) were very helpful in our pilot season by providing volunteers and donating supplies.

Truckee teen installs solar project for Humane Society

Truckee High School student and volunteer Bella Bono has been volunteering for the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) since she was 10, but this year she had a big idea – plan, fund and install a solar array for the animal shelter.

Barton Health welcomes three new doctors to their staff

Dr. Clint Purvance has announced the addition of three new physicians to the Barton Health team in South Lake Tahoe: Dr. Sherellen Gerhart, Dr. Danielle Priem and Dr. Saul Zelan.

Sherellen Gerhart, MD is Barton Palliative Care's physician. Palliative Care is a new service line created to help patients develop an optimal care plan catered to their individual health and comfort needs once diagnosed with a terminal illness, but not yet ready for hospice; learn more below. Dr. Gerhart is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Palliative and Hospice Medicine, and Geriatric Medicine.

Live Violence Free's 17th Annual Sunset Gala

The Warm Room was open from December 18 through April 1 and provided the first overnight homeless services in the Tahoe Region.

Mom’s Morning Out: A morning of health and wellness

“Mom’s Morning Out is an event just for women that unites the body and mind.” says Natasha Schue, Barton’s Community Relations Coordinator. “It’s an opportunity to slow down, unwind, and be pampered.”

The first activity, Beyond Yoga with The Studio Lake Tahoe, starts at 8:00 a.m. Other fitness classes throughout the morning include Cardio Core with Tahoe Fit and Healthy Mommies Yoga with Lake Tahoe Yoga.

Dr. Amanda Weavil voted Barton's Doctor of the Year

Amanda Weavil, MD collected her third victory this month when she was voted Barton Health’s 2016 Doctor of the Year.

Dr. Weavil is a board-certified OB-GYN for Barton Women’s Health. In early March, she won the Dancing with the Tahoe Stars competition and received the people’s choice award. Now, in honor of national Doctors Day, Barton Health physicians and staff voted Weavil as their favorite physician.

South Lake Tahoe woman facing brain cancer with friends, family and hugs

"I will not let cancer define who I am. Cancer is not going to be my story."

Those powerful words come from South Lake Tahoe local Krista Kline Carson.

The 1989 South Tahoe High graduate, wife, mother and wellness coordinator for Barton University, is battling cancer after a tumor removed from her brain was found to be Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, one of the fastest growing brain cancers. On Monday, January 18 she begins a six week regime of radiation and chemotherapy.

Tips to avoid tendon strain

As we gear up for outdoor winter activities, the potential for sports-related injuries stacks up. Tendonitis is a common winter sports injury. Here are some facts about this condition and different ways to prevent it.

Tendons are bands of fibrous connective tissue that attach muscles to the bones. Micro tears in the tendon can lead to irritation and inflammation known as tendonitis. If the area is not well rested or treated, the tendon starts to degenerate and can turn into unhealthy scar tissue that does not perform or move well.

First South Lake Tahoe baby of the year born on January 1

When the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day, Rogelio Castañeda and a very pregnant Margarita García gave a New Year’s toast with a glass of champagne and a glass of apple cider, respectively. Three hours later, after a brief slumber, Margarita woke up in labor.

The couple headed to Barton Family Birthing Center and at 6:36 p.m. on January 1, Jeremy Nicolas Castañeda García was born. Jeremy weighed seven pounds, eleven ounces and was 20.5 inches long. He was named after Margarita’s mother Geremia, who passed away when Margarita was young.

Michael P. Sheehan, March 12, 1970 - November 21, 2015

Michael P. Sheehan passed away on Nov. 21, 2015. He was the beloved son of David J. and Elizabeth A. (nee Bitzel) Sheehan; loving brother of Kerry DiBiagio and her husband Mark; cherished uncle of Molly and Anthony DiBiagio. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

On behalf of the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless, I would like to thank Barton Health employees and physicians for their incredible generosity.

More than 647 employees in 35 departments participated in a fundraising drive for the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room. Employees and physicians raised $2,040 in funds and donated more than 3,000 items – approximately $8,000 in value – totally more than $10,000 in donations.

Dr. Kyle Swanson to be honored during Minden Airshow

Military veterans of all ages will be honored at the 5th Annual Aviation Roundup, August 22 and 23, 2015 at Minden-Tahoe Airport. Among those veterans being recognized is Dr. Kyle Swanson, an orthopedic surgeon with Tahoe Orthopedics & Sport Medicine in Carson City and Lake Tahoe. The Army veteran served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan where he performed surgeries on soldiers and Afghan civilians injured during the conflict of war.

Hall of Fame honors for former South Lake Tahoe orthopaedic surgeon

Former South Lake Tahoe orthopaedic surgeon and U.S. Ski Team doctor, J. Richard Steadman, MD, will be inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s (AOSSM) Hall of Fame on Friday, July 10th, during the Society’s Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. AOSSM Hall of Famers are individuals in the sports medicine community who have contributed immensely and set themselves apart from others in the field.

New teams at Barton's Urgent Care and Family Practice offices

With the retirement of Dr. Gregory Bergner in April and the pending retirement of Dr. Paul Marlow in September, Barton Urgent Care and Barton Health have announced the new team at their Stateline office.

Warren Withers, MD, has moved from his position as Director of Emergency Services at Barton Hospital to Barton Urgent Care. He will join Patti Bucher, FNP and Michelle Feeney, FNP who both joined Barton Urgent Care this past year.

Barton Health Surgery moves to new home; Reopens Tuesday

Barton General Surgery has moved down the street. Formerly located with Barton Family Medicine on Third Street, the medical office has relocated to 2158 Jean Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

The newer building has been remodeled to ease patient access. It has larger patient rooms and a ramp for wheelchair access. The office can also accommodate more patients with additional rooms and a larger waiting area.

South Lake Tahoe's first baby of the year born at Barton Hospital

It didn't take long for the first baby of the year to be born on the South Shore. On January 1 at 3:06 p.m., Jayden Daniel Molina Torres was born to South Lake Tahoe natives Brianda Torres and Daniel Molina. Jayden weighed seven pounds, seven ounces and measured eighteen inches long.

Mom, dad, and Jayden’s six-year-old brother Noe Torres were all born at Barton Hospital. Brianda and Daniel both grew up in South Lake Tahoe, and met through Brianda’s family.

Letter: Prop 46 is Manipulative to Voters

California Proposition 46 is costly and deceiving to voters. It would increase costs for patients, deter doctors from practicing in California, and threaten patient privacy. The consequences are also higher for rural communities like South Lake Tahoe. I have been a physician in South Lake Tahoe for over 34 years and I’m asking our voters and patients to take a closer look; Prop 46 just doesn’t add up.

Tahoe native, Dr. Alison Ganong, joins Tahoe Sports Medicine

Alison Ganong, MD will be joining Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in September.

The board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician specializes in interventional sports medicine and spine care.

Lake Tahoe Attracts Top-Notch Physicians

Physicians are in high demand, but not just from patients. With an impending physician shortage and more job competition, medical administrators and recruiters will spend hours attending meetings, networking, and recruiting to hire top-notch physicians.

In a 2012 study, the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR) estimated that physician recruitment costs between $75,000 and $90,000 per doctor. This does not include the time and effort to set up a medical practice and then to retain a physician.

Lake Tahoe entertainer Arthur Hervey launches campaign to help with medical expenses

Many people know him as Arty the Party, others know him as Arthur Hervey while others will remember him as a local entertainer who has graced local stages with his piano and singing for years.

Arty, who once worked for Caesars Tahoe and is now with Harrah's Tahoe, recently lost his wife Randee to Andrenal Cancer. Their love story lives on even though Randee is no longer with us. Facing mounting medical bills, a gofundme.com campaign has been launched to help with expenses.

Specialized yoga classes for M.S. patients in South Lake Tahoe

It has been shown that people who suffer from the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) find relief in yoga due to it's emphasis on relaxation, breathing and deliberate movements.

Barton Health Announces Doctor of the Year

Dr, Daniel T. Robertson was named Barton Health's Doctor of the Year. Known as "The Hand Guy," Dr. Robertson is an orthopedic surgeon for Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, specializing in treating injuries of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder.

Each year a doctor on staff at Barton is voted on by peers and staff and awarded the honor on "Doctor's Day."

It's Not Just South Lake Tahoe Athletes Who Are Headed to the Olympics, Local Doctors are too!

There are more local additions to the U.S. Olympic team than the three South Lake Tahoe athletes who were named to the U.S. Olympic team. Two local doctors are also headed to Sochi for the winter games.

Terrence Orr, MD, and Jonathan Finnoff, DO, both physicians with Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, will volunteer as team physicians at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

New Radiologist on Board at Barton Health in South Lake Tahoe

Barton Health of South Lake Tahoe has announced the addition of a new radiologist, Dr. Robert Silk. He is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross where he earned a B.A. in Physics, a Masters from the New Mexico State University, and his medical degree from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD. He performed his residency at Naval Medical Center in San Diego.
