Surge of COVID--19 cases in Alpine County concerns health officer

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The least populated county in California is just to the south of Lake Tahoe. Alpine County, population about 1,200, includes the towns of Markleeville, Woodfords, Kirkwood and Bear Valley. While not big, Alpine County is experiencing a surge of COVID-19 cases just like the rest of the country.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With people unable to dine-in at restaurants in South Lake Tahoe due to concerns of the spread of the coronavirus, many are changing the way they've done business in the past in order to serve guests, keep some staff employed and keep afloat during these uncertain financial times.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE,Calif. - Warren Miller's ski movie "Face of Winter" will be shown at the South Tahoe High School TADA Theater on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 7:00 p.m.
The school's Alpine Ski Team is showing the film as their annual movie night fundraiser. Tickets are $15 and available from any ski team member, Coach Ms. Bedwell, or at the door. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. There will be a silent auction, door prizes, and snacks available for purchase. All profits raised go to purchase uniforms and equipment for the ski team.

Kirkwood opens for season

Kirkwood Mountain Resort kicked off their 2017-2018 ski season Friday. They have opened four of their 15 lifts (1,5,6,11), giving access to 250 acres of skiing on 15 percent of their terrain.
Operating hours at this time are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Heavenly is open in South Lake Tahoe, with Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Mt. Rose open on the North Shore. Northstar was originally planning on opening Friday but instead will announce their opening day on November 27.

By chance he meets Chouinard and Tompkins and learns of their efforts to protect the stunning wilderness of Patagonia.

Movie Night fundraiser to feature the Mob and Godfather

A unique fundraiser in South Lake Tahoe will feature a showing of The Godfather Part II, which was partly filmed in Lake Tahoe, and an opportunity to talk to Meyer Lansky II. Lansky is the grandson of the man known as the "Mob's Accountant," a major organized crime figure who, along with his associate Charles "Lucky" Luciano, was instrumental in the development of the "National Crime Syndicate" who inspired the movie character Hyman Roth.

March 4, 2016 - 7:00pm Lake of the Sky Outfitters will be showing the movie "Third Man on the Mountain", a Disney classic about a young man trying to fulfill his fathers quest to to climb the mountain that killed him, "The Citadel". Filmed on and around the Matterhorn the film accurately depicts the climbing style and equipment of the Golden Age of mountaineering. The actors had to learn to climb to make the movie more realistic.
Admission is free. We will accept donations to defray the costs.

The City of South Lake Tahoe, Lighthouse Cafe, Lakeview Cafe and Radiant Blue Events are presenting this night under the stars for the community and visitors alike.

Everest which was originally chronicled in the book "Into Thin Air". Produced by American climber and film maker David Breashears who was on the mountain as the events unfolded on that fateful night and participated in the rescue attempts. He takes us back to the mountain and also interviews survivors of the event.

Opinion: Alone We Can Do So Little; Together We Can Do So Much

Helen Keller wrote those words many years ago yet they continue to be very relevant today. As I look forward to 2014 I also like to reflect on another one of my favorite quotes, this one from Ghandi, "you must be the change you wish to see in the world."
As a community that is in the midst of change, we can be reminded of these quotes as we move forward and live in a town we're both proud of, and a vibrant part of.

Summer programs continue in August at Taylor Creek Visitor Center

The programs are sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service and the Tahoe Heritage Foundation, a non-profit organization that works with the Forest Service to conduct interpretive and environmental education programs in the Tahoe. Donations to the Tahoe Heritage Foundation are welcomed.

The Summer Keynote Speaker Series at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center continues every Thursday evening through August at the Lake of the Sky Amphitheater. Programs in August include “An Evening with Mark Twain” on August 2 at 7 p.m., “Leave No Trace” on August 9 at 8 p.m., “Winged Flight at Night” on August 16 at 8 p.m., "Stargazing with Richard Combs on August 23 at 8 p.m. and "Wild Things" on August 30 at 7 p.m.
