Think First - Keep Tahoe Fire Safe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/15/2016 - 4:25pmJune is wildfire awareness month at Lake Tahoe. And nine years later, the 2007 Angora Fire remains a vivid remember that wildfire is one of the greatest threats facing our environment, our homes, and our businesses. We must prepare accordingly.
Our region continues to take important steps to manage that wildfire threat, improve the health of our forests, and create fire adapted communities that are prepared for the next wildfire at Tahoe. But there is more work to do.

Opinion: If you see something, say something
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/04/2016 - 5:37pmOn September 12, 2001, advertising luminary Allen Kay coined the phrase, “If you see something, say something.”[1] In the wake of horrific events the day before, Kay recognized that no matter how well trained, equipped and staffed, law enforcement can’t do it alone. Within a relatively short period of time, the slogan was plastered on New York City transit vehicles. Over time, the Law Enforcement and Homeland Security slogan has become so well known it has been described as the equivalent of Nike’s “Just do it” advertisement.[2]
Active shooter drill near Barton Hospital on Thursday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/01/2016 - 10:07pmThe California Highway Patrol office in South Lake Tahoe is informing the public that they will be having an "Active Shooter Drill" on Thursday, June 2 at one of the Barton facilities near the hospital.
This is a dramatization involving law enforcement and may look very real to the public. CHP would like the public to tell their friends and neighbors, and anyone who might be in the area on Thursday, about the drill and not to be alarmed. Weapon simulators will be used in place of actual weapons, therefore giving the drill the appearance of an actual active shooter event.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2015 - 10:17pmSometime in the future, one will be able to hop on a bike at Van Sickle Bi-State Park and travel on Class 1 trails to Sierra Tract, and hopefully beyond.
The concept for the trail where people would walk and bike safely off the main roads actually began in 1985. Caltrans owned land through the middle of neighborhoods where a highway was proposed, but when it was apparent that would never be built, the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) joined Caltrans in discussions to obtain the land.

Measure to restrict Airbnb rentals in San Francisco losing by wide margin
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/03/2015 - 9:45pmSan Francisco voters are poised to hand a decisive victory to Airbnb and city residents who want to turn their homes into vacation rentals. Proposition F, a measure to curb short-term rentals drastically, was losing by a margin of 61 percent to 39 percent, according to the early count of mail-in ballots.
Prop. F, the most contentious and most expensive issue on the Tuesday ballot, centers on whether vacation rentals divert scarce housing to lucrative illegal year-round hotels, as its backers claimed, or help middle-class people make ends meet, as Airbnb and other opponents said.

Airbnb has spent more than $8 million and hired a top political operative to defeat a San Francisco initiative on the ballot Tuesday that could threaten the growth of one of the most valuable global technology companies.
Proposition F, which would limit short-term rentals, was brought by affordable housing advocates fed up with the city's housing stock being used as rentals for tourists while residents face skyrocketing rents and evictions.
