Lake Tahoe Basin under Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday

A fire weather watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for Tuesday throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin and much of Northern California and Nevada.
An area of low pressure off the California Coast will move northeast across Oregon on Tuesday. Ahead of the system, gusty southwest winds will impact Northeast California and Western Nevada on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Gusty winds combined with low humidity may create critical fire weather conditions, according to the weather service.

Charter Communications outage affects South Lake Tahoe

Update 7:30AM: Service has been restored for Charter customers affected by Wednesday morning's outage.

4:35AM: A widespread cable, internet and telephone outage is affecting Charter Communications customers on the California side of Lake Tahoe. A customer service representative for Charter said the outage is widespread affecting much of Northern California including much of South Lake Tahoe. The customer service representative said he did not know the cause of the outage but said it is expected to be resolved by 9 a.m. Nevada customers across the state line do not appear to be affected, he said.

Lake Tahoe will be thrust in the spotlight again when scientists, public agencies and elected officials meet Aug. 13 for the 16th annual Lake Tahoe Summit at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. To be discussed with great interest is the protection and health of Lake Tahoe's fragile environment and economy.
“The health of the environment and the health of the economy at Tahoe are linked,” Derek Kauneckis, political science professor and researcher at the University of Nevada, Reno said. “And the collaborations that have been established at the Lake have set the stage for future efforts.”

When the South Lake Tahoe arts community calls out, Trey Stone and his band are there to headline the show. The community is invited to join the Trey Stone Band for three hours of R&B, funk and soul at an outdoor concert — Music at the Moose — to benefit the Tahoe Arts Project at 5 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 25, at the Moose Lodge, 961 Eloise Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.
The cost is $10 for adults and free for children. Dished up for purchase at this community benefit concert include burgers and hot dogs, soda, ice cream, and more. There's a cash bar available and a raffle will be held. All proceeds benefit the Tahoe Arts Project.

Competition Seeks Area's Elite CrossFit Athletes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE- Calif. One hundred CrossFit Athletes in Northern California and Nevada will gather at South Tahoe CrossFit this Saturday, June 16, for a one-day challenge to find the area's fittest man and woman.

In its third year, the Fittest of the Sierras Competition has gained recognition as being the premier CrossFit event in the area. In 2010 the competition hosted athletes from the Reno-Tahoe vicinity, but has now expanded to include competitors from Bishop, Sacramento Central Valley and the Bay Area.

Gusty winds, low humidity could produce fire weather conditions at Lake Tahoe

An area of low pressure will push a cold front across northern California and Nevada Friday, producing gusty afternoon and early evening winds. These winds will combine with low relative humidity to create critical fire weather conditions for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Southwest winds Friday afternoon will become west Friday evening with sustained speeds of 15 to 30 mph and gusts of 40 to 45 mph.

Services for legendary radio commentator Travus T. Hipp will be held this Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Hipp died early Friday morning, May 18, at his Silver City home. He was 75, as old as the Golden Gate Bridge in his beloved San Francisco.

Today is the day: South Lake Tahoe bicycle group Slow Rollers is asking the community to come out to its second annual Spirit Bike Parade today and an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records by forming the longest single line of bicycles.
