Housing, or lack thereof, has been a hot topic in recent years in South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding South Shore communities. A recent town hall forum on housing issues was recently held, and there will soon be a housing task force organized by El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel.

During the supervisor's October 25 meeting, Novasel is asking for $15,000 to engage a consultant to lead task force members through six sessions addressing the problem.

A collaborative planning process to enhance and protect the 72 miles of Lake Tahoe shoreline has begun, and they would like public input to complete the plan.

There will be two workshops this fall to help guide creation of a Shoreline Plan that not only protects the scenic shoreline, but enhances recreational access to the lake.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is seeking community input during the workshops which will be held on the North Shore on Wednesday, Sept. 21 and at the south end on Thursday, Nov. 3.

Many conversations around South Lake Tahoe center around affordable housing, but the community isn't alone in this topic.

Ted Kennedy continues to show his appreciation for local heroes through his South Lake Tahoe restaurants.

Kennedy, who on the ownership team of Base Camp Pizza, California Burger, Azul Latin Kitchen and now, the Lakeside Beach House, shows gratitude on a weekly basis. Those in uniform and teachers get a free meal at any of his four restaurants (police officers, sheriff's deputies, fire personnel, nurses and those on active duty).

"This is to thank them, and show that we appreciate their service," said Kennedy. "They are our local heroes."

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and its partners have started work on the Shoreline Plan, a collaborative planning process to enhance recreation and protect Lake Tahoe’s 72 miles of shoreline.

The aim is to strike a balance between recreational access, the many uses along Tahoe’s shores, and environmental protection. An inclusive, open public process will bring in as many voices and viewpoints as possible to represent a wide range of stakeholders in developing new policy and code over the next two years.

A 3.43 acre piece of land once owned by Randy Lane's Falcon Capital LLC may soon have a 22-unit condominium project built on it. The property (made up from two parcels) is underneath the gondola, adjacent to the Van Sickle Bi-State Park near the state line in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. The listed owner of the property is now Lucky Look LLC.

The Tuesday, April 4 South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting may have a short agenda, but two hot topics will be sure to bring out interested locals.

In February, 2016, Council sent proposed changes to a sub-committee, and those results will be up for vote Tuesday.

Proposed changes to the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) Ordinance include:

- Application for a VHR permit will not trigger the need to comply to TRPA BMP and coverage compliance.

In January, 2016, South Tahoe Now carried stories concerning the rise of vacation rental scams in Lake Tahoe. The first story described the epidemic of scams through Craigslist that targeted those looking for vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe.

The remaining tenants at the Tahoe Shore Mobile Home Park at Stateline, Nev., have been given 90 days to find new housing now that owners of the Tahoe Beach Club will be breaking ground on a 20-acre luxury lakefront condominium project.

This announcement should come as no surprise to the people who own or rent the mobile homes since they were originally told in 2003 that they would have to move so the project could be built.

The Tahoe Beach Club has been 14 years in the making and now it looks like the first shovels will be moving dirt at the new lakeside development by June, 2016.

Now that the gift giving season is upon us, many people may have model airplanes, drones or quadcopters on their wish list. There are some new rules in place that all users of the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) need to know.

The Federal Aviation Administration today that all UAS units weighing between 0.55 pounds and 50 pounds must be registered by February 19th, 2016.

With an increase in the number of bicycle thefts and other property crimes in South Lake Tahoe, a new high tech device to help the fight on crime is now being introduced by the police department.

The new technology is called Anti-Theft Dots. This DNA for property crime will assist the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) in their efforts to combat theft in the community. Property crime is the number one crime statistic in the nation according to the Department of Justice.

Lake Tahoe radio host, standup comedian and emcee of the Improv at Harveys, Howie Nave is among 62 Nevada radio and television personalities and managers who will be inducted into the Nevada Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame this Saturday in Las Vegas.

It was another packed house at the South Lake Tahoe City Council's meeting Tuesday, which has been commonplace for all of the meetings and workshops on the contentious subject of vacation home rentals.

South Lake Tahoe's major summer event, the American Century Championship, will once again add another U.S. Army veteran and hero to the 2015 event this July.

Retired United States Army Sergeant Major Rodney Gorman will join the field by virtue of his victory in the 2014 George W. Bush Presidential Center’s Warrior Open. South Lake Tahoe non-profits were awarded $48,000 during the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority board meeting today. The 22 groups were each given between $1,000 and $3,000. The LTVA, in partnership with NBC Sports and American Century Investments, previously directed an additional $67,200 through on-site volunteer organizations and other efforts during tournament week to area high schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Booster Club, Boys and Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe, and the Gene Upshaw Scholarship

If you've driven through the Bijou area of South Lake Tahoe over the last couple of years you know that it's been undergoing a major stormwater treatment transformation with the replacement of pipes and the addition of water treatment chambers.

The City of South Lake Tahoe held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, celebrating the near completion of the project which is treating stormwater runoff from 42 acres within the Bijou Commercial Core area, preventing 21,000 pounds of fine sediment particles from reaching Lake Tahoe each year.

Whole the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel is undergoing $8 million dollars in renovations, the leadership of the hotel formerly known as "Embassy Suites" is also undergoing renovations.

The resort just celebrated a year of independence in April 2014 and is putting into place a management structure that throws away the corporate mold, and invests in the resort’s front line -- its staff.
