Douglas County seniors and community center receive generator donation

Douglas County Community & Senior Center received a 125 KW generator for backup emergency power that will allow the facility to better serve as an emergency evacuation facility. The generator will also protect 8,000 + frozen meals and $10,000 worth of food products held in the freezers and coolers in the Senior Center Dining Room kitchens during a power outage. This emergency generator will also provide power in the Douglas County Health Clinic, located inside the Community and Senior Center which services the healthcare needs of many Douglas County residents.

Teen who died near Vikingsholm identified

A 14-year-old from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota has been identified as the victim in Wednesday's fall at Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe.

Chloe Conn fell approximately 50-feet while hiking near the Vikingsholm Trail at about noon on May 31.

No other details about the fall, or who Conn was with in Lake Tahoe have been released by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO).

"Don't take our lanes away" common theme at crowded NDOT meeting

A preliminary step in what will be a multi-year Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) process took place at Zephyr Cove Elementary School Wednesday evening. About double the expected maximum of 120 people crowded the school's multi-purpose room to view and listen to the agency's plans for the stretch of Highway 50 from Stateline to Spooner Summit in Lake Tahoe which is officially called the US50 Lake Tahoe Corridor Safety Improvement.

Teen dies after fall at Lake Tahoe

A 14-year-old female died on Wednesday, May 31 after she fell approximately 50 feet while hiking near the Vikingsholm trail at Emerald Bay.

Just after noon, On May 31, 2017, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received the call and responded along with CHP, Cal-Star, CA State Parks, Lake Valley Fire and South Tahoe EMS personnel. An off-duty law enforcement officer who was recreating in the area began CPR on the victim prior to the arrival of on-duty first responders.

Spring into Summer event to highlight recreation services in South Lake Tahoe

Summer programs offered by the City of South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Department will be the focus of a kick-off party on Saturday, June 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Recreation & Swim Complex.

It has been a busy holiday weekend for the South Lake Tahoe fire and police departments.

Two women survive after vehicle plunges into Carson River

Two women escaped what could have been a tragic accident after their vehicle plunged into the fast-moving Carson River early Friday morning.

Deputies were called into the Carson River Canyon near Deer Run Road in the early morning hours, for a report of a vehicle that went into the river. Dispatch advised both occupants of the vehicle managed to escape and were safe. Dispatch received the initial call at 2:42 a.m.

One woman, who is pregnant, was taken to the hospital for an injury to her foot, according to family friend Crystal Pacheco. The other woman suffered minor scratches.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations next week beginning May 22.

If conditions are favorable, operations are scheduled to take place near Sugar Pine Point, Glenbrook, Lower Kingsbury Grade, Ski Run Boulevard, Fallen Leaf Lake and Meyers. Operations may continue over the next several weeks, weather permitting.

Man biking across the country to raise awareness of Tahoe's homeless struggles

Daniel Deemer is biking across America on his "Bike for the Homeless" tour from Big Sur, California to Ocean City, Maryland to bring awareness to a social issue he is deeply passionate about.

In partnership with Tahoe Youth and Family Services, Dan is using the trip in an effort to raise funds for the agency and increase awareness of homelessness.

Dan will be leaving Big Sur on May 22, 2017. He has no predetermined route, but will be passing through the Sierra Nevada on SR-88, and through South Lake Tahoe.

City's business plan presented; Public encouraged to review

Every two years a new business plan is presented to the South Lake Tahoe City Council, outlining goals, the vision and strategic priorities. This is done after each election.

In February, City staff, Council and community members got together for a two-day strategic planning session, and the results that came out of that were put into the 2017/18 South Lake Tahoe Business Plan.

Volunteer at a California State Park in Tahoe and get free camping

There are two opportunities for people to help prepare Lake Tahoe campgrounds for the upcoming busy summer season. The California State Parks work days will be on May 20 at Ed Z'Berg Sugar Pine and on May 21 at D.L. Bliss .

People may volunteer for one or both days. Tools, training, lunch (and high fives) are included. As a special treat, volunteers are also invited to tent camp too.

If conditions are favorable around Lake Tahoe next week, the North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, California Tahoe Contservancy, and the U.S. Forest Service will be continuing their prescribed fire operations.

Operations are scheduled near Sugar Pine Point, Brockway Summit, Incline Village, Glenbrook, Lower Kingsbury Grade, Ski Run Boulevard, Lake Tahoe Airport, Fallen Leaf Lake and Meyers.

SLT Police stepping up responses to complaints of homeless and transients

During the spring and summer of 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe received many complaints for homeless people causing safety and health problems in parks and public places, mainly Lakeview Commons, Campground by the Lake, Heavenly Village and the transit centers at both ends of town.

This spring the number of calls have increased, and officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police have responded. The main five locations the problems occurred at in 2016 remain the same so far in 2017.

California Boater Card soon to be required for Lake Tahoe and other waterways

To increase safety on not only Lake Tahoe, but on waterways across the state, operators of motorized vessels will soon be required to possess a California Boater Card. The first group to fall into this category, those 20 years of age or younger, must have a card by January 1, 2018 with other age groups added annually.

Those renting boats will not be required to get a card, nor will those in the state less than 60 days or holding a commercial fishing license.

Widespread fire operations to continue in Lake Tahoe Basin

North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service are planning to continue prescribed fire operations next week beginning May 1. If conditions are favorable operations will take place in the following areas:

A) Glenbrook Area - 30 acres
B) Lower Kingsbury Area - 5 acres
C) Upper Jennifer/Tyner Area - 32 acres
D) Sugar Pine - 5 acres
E) Highway 50 and Logan Creek - 50 acres
F) SR89 and Grass Lake/ Luther Pass - 30 acres
G) SR89 and Fallen Leaf Lake Road - 40 acres
H) SR267/Brockway Summit - 40 acres

Winners of TRPA Lake Spirit Awards announced

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) honored four people with Lake Spirit Awards Wednesday who have shown exceptional commitment to protecting Lake Tahoe and fostering a spirit of collaboration in their work and volunteer time.

This year’s award winners do everything from helping protect Lake Tahoe communities from wildfire and aquatic invasive species to promoting alternative transportation and sustainable lifestyles.

New company on board to plan new South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center

A new partner is now on board to help bring a new recreation center and swim complex to South Lake Tahoe, construction of which could start as early as 2018.

Voters in November approved a two percent Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) increase to fund the new project that benefits not only locals but tourists as well.

Volunteer at California State Parks this Earth Day

There's only a few more hours to register to volunteer for the 19th Earth Day Restoration and Cleanup Event at California State Parks on on Saturday, April 22. The closest opportunity for those in the Lake Tahoe area is at Grover Hot Springs.

From 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., volunteers will be doing maintenance and development of the Native Plant Demonstration Garden, weed removal and landscaping at the park in Markleville, 30 miles south of South Lake Tahoe.

Dog dies in whirlpool drain at Topaz Lake

A dog's life was tragically taken in Topaz Lake after being pulled into a whirlpool drain on Saturday while attempting to retrieve a stick.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and the loss of the dog," said Melissa Blosser, Public Information Office for Douglas County. "We immediately reached out to the owner of the animal to find out what happened and express condolences."

Tahoe Fund and USFS launch project to control trashed sleds in Lake Tahoe

What has become an out-of-control, unsightly and all too common practice at Lake Tahoe snow play areas now has a champion to control abandoned sleds.

Tahoe Fund Executive Director Amy Berry brought several organizations together to discuss potential solutions to resolve this issue. It had been on their radar for some time, but with the rapid growth of discarded sleds covering the landscape, Berry and the Tahoe Care Team of the agency knew something had to be done immediately.
