The Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating the new additions at Johnson Lane Park and the public invited to a dedication of the facilities on December 1, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.

Construction on the new additions began over a year ago and was completed this Fall on new tennis and pickle ball courts, pavers, playground, pavilion and restroom building.

The park is located at 1476 Stephanie Way in Minden, Nev.

All candidates for South Lake Tahoe City Council were given the same questions. With just one day to go to the elections, we will be featuring their answers and a video of their interview with Tahoe Regional Young Professionals through the day.

Discuss your interest in serving on City Council. What is your prior experience in working with civic, community or governmental organizations?

With several state parks around the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding Sierra Nevada, budding Van Goghs have a lot of local experience to draw upon as they enter the California State Park Foundation's art contest, "Discover State Parks."

Since the parks offer endless opportunities for inspiration, the Youth Art Contest is a way for young people to draw on those experiences to create art featuring their encounters with wildlife and nature, learning about history and culture or enjoying recreation.

There are many important issues concerning the Nation, California and South Lake on the November 8th ballot. Not only we will decide on who the next President is but we’ll also be voting in two City Officials, who some could argue will actually have a greater impact on our daily lives than the Nation’s Leader.

California State Parks is looking for volunteers to help them prepareEd Z'Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park for winter. They are holding a work day on October 26 from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Help prepare the park grounds for the approaching winter. Projects may include raking the lawn, weeding in the native plant gardens, and laying new grass seed.

There will be free limited overnight camping for volutneers. If interested in camping, email parkchampionstacy@gmail.com.

All volunteers will be rewarded with a card for a free Chipotle burrito.

Recreational facilities managed and owned by the U.S. Forest Service around the lake are starting their seasonal closures.

These winter closures apply to many Forest Service recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, and picnic areas, which traditionally close in mid-October. Forest roads close around mid-November for soil protection and public safety.

At the Lake Tahoe Summit last month, we saw the power of what we can accomplish when we work together. Progress over the last two decades was showcased when President Obama made his first-ever visit to Tahoe and said conservation and restoration efforts like ours are more important than ever as the nation works to adapt to a changing climate and create a more resilient environment.

Zephyr Cove Resort will remain open for business as soil impacted by a 2011 underground fuel release is removed from an area near the south beach volleyball courts starting Monday, September 12.

Even though those driving by and visiting the resort will see the activity, impact to operations is expected to be minimal. There may be some disruption to parking and the volleyball area but watercraft rentals and sightseeing boats will continue to operate during the excavation.

There are 59 national parks in the United States and they are all celebrating the 100th birthday of the National Park Service. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed an act of Congress, the National Park Service Organic Act, which created the agency that now watches over 84.4 million acres of land, 4.5 million acres of oceans, reservoirs and lakes, 85,000 miles of rivers and streams, and 43,000 miles of shoreline.

Steve Hale will portray Stephen T. Mather, first director of the National Park Service, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 10, at 6:30 pm.

Stephen Tying Mather distinguished himself as a consummate salesman, including the iconic 20 Mule Team Borax brand, which helped him amass a fortune by the early 20th century. After visiting the new western national parks and meeting John Muir, Mather went on to mold the vision of the new National Park Service and was honored by being appointed its first director in 1916.

Four separate fires are burning north of Reno, sending smoke throughout Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe basin.

The Virginia Mountains Complex is made up currently of four separate wildland fires, including the Anderson (5626 acres), Sage (4239 acres), Seven Lakes (3063 acres) and Tule (7267 acres) Fires. All of these lightning-caused fires are burning within about 20-miles of each other in an arc about 35-miles north of Reno.

The vast majority of the public lands burning are administered by the Bureau of Land Management-Carson City District.

The South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic returns to the Tahoe Keys Marina this weekend with a celebration of vintage raceboats. Featured will be industrialist Henry Kaiser, Jr.'s one-of-a-kind 1930 Gar Wood Hornet II and his 1955 Scooter Too with its huge and extremely rare 24-cylinder Allison engine. Both hydroplanes are racing legends. Also on display will be the 1913 Redskin, the 1950's movie star Hurricane IV and the all-aluminium experimental Shanty II.

A proposed redevelopment plan for Squaw Valley would include affordable employee housing, new infrastructure including roads and fire safety, as well as environmental improvements according to Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, LLC. They have kicked off and effort to communicate with the public and gain support through "Squaw Tomorrow" for what is being called the Village at Squaw Valley redevelopment project.

Teddy Roosevelt once said the Chautauqua is "the most American thing about America." Audiences will soon be able to see one of these historical, and entertaining, events on the South Shore when the Lake Tahoe Historical Society presents their annual Chautauqua at Lake Tahoe August 13 at 6:30 p.m. There is a cocktail party with fabulous appetizers at 5:15 p.m., which is included in the price of admission.

On Saturday, June 11, residents and visitors receive free day-use admission at all of Nevada's 23 State Parks as part of “Discover Nevada State Parks.”

This statewide event encourages Nevadans and visitors to explore the outdoors.

Discover Nevada State Parks day is also an opportunity for visitors to take the passport challenge and add a stamp to their passport booklet, or if they don’t have one yet, to pick one up while visiting a state park. Once visitors have their passports stamped at 15 different parks, they earn a free annual pass to all Nevada State Parks.

Several local agencies have teamed together to inform the public on the importance of proper food storage and trash disposal at their Lake Tahoe homes and vacation rentals.

California State Parks Foundation has created a way for people to enjoy their parks while volunteering for a day. This is happening across the state in response to budget cuts.

Park Champions is having their first workday at Ed Z'Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Thursday, June 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to remove invasive plants in order to restore habitat for the birds and the bees. Tools, training and snacks provided. The Sierra State Parks Foundation will also offer volunteers a free guided tour.

On Saturday, June 4, 2016, the Sierra State Parks Foundation is proud to host the second annual fundraising gala “A Night at the Museum: Celebrating the Pioneer Experience”. This “country elegant” evening will kick off the fundraising efforts to restore the 98 year-old Donner Pioneer Monument. Starting at 6:00 p.m., guests will enjoy a night filled with live music, costumed period actors, unique food, and our signature “Not-So-Silent Auction”.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has released a "Flash Vote," looking for community input on ideas for both locals and tourists in the community. But, people only have two days to vote as "the flash" is over on May 13 at 1:15 p.m.

What small projects would you like the City of South Lake Tahoe add that would cost $10,000 or less? Would it be new lines on the soccer fields, or shelter around bus stops? Or, would you like to spend $10,000 on something new along the bike trails or city parks? The ballot also asks for other opinions and ideas and takes just a few minutes to complete.

The City of South Lake Tahoe’s Parks and Recreation Commission will be presenting a proclamation to the Bijou Bike Park Association at the next City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 3 at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers located at 1901 Airport Rd. The Association is being recognized for their work in helping to plan and build the Bijou Bike Park.

Weather permitting, California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations beginning Monday, April 11, 2016.
