Rotary International's World Polio Day is being celebrated around the world this weekend, a time set aside for global health experts and partners to share the service club's progress on the road to polio eradication.

It has been over 60 years since the Jonas Salk polio vaccine was declared safe, effective, and potent. In that time, the number of polio cases has dropped by 99 percent worldwide. With just three countries remaining polio-endemic, eradicating this crippling disease is almost complete. There is no cure, and only the vaccine to prevent it.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary donates $20,000 to local nonprofits amidst COVID-19 emergency

STATELINE, Nev. - Due to the catastrophic impact of COVID-19, the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Douglas announced its immediate initial commitment and disbursement of $20,000 in cash grants to four South Lake Tahoe Community proactive support agencies - Tahoe Magic, Christmas Cheer, Giving Angels and Bread & Broth.

The club has been serving the South Shore community since 1965 and just completed an online auction in lieu of their normal annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary cancels annual St. Patrick's Celebration due to Covid-19 concerns

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club has decided to cancel its 52nd annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration planned for March 20, 2020, but people may still participate in an online auction and Hawaiian vacation raffle.

The club said, that though no cases of the CoronaVirus Covid-19 have been confirmed in this area, they wanted to keep with its commitment to benefit the community and not hold the popular event.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

It was an eventful week for students and staff at South Tahoe High School. With unfortunate news, fundraisers, and the end to successful “fall sports” seasons. STHS is getting ready for Thanksgiving break.

On Campus

Thursday morning, woodshop teacher, Nathan Crnich was arrested at the STHS campus on sexual misconduct charges. While news was shocking to many, students said they feel safer.

South Lake Tahoe Rotary to celebrate Roberta Mason at polio eradication fundraiser

The South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club is inviting the community to join them on Wednesday, October 23 at Lake Tahoe AleWorX to not only honor Roberta Mason but to also "kick polio's behind." This is a family-friendly event from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Roberta recently celebrated her 90th birthday and the party continues. She has been a vital part of the local community for over 60 years and was instrumental in bringing Lake Tahoe Community College into existence. She was a member of their Board of Trustees for 40 years.

A huge thank you to all those that came out and supported South Lake Tahoe Rotary’s recent fundraiser at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Kevin Sommerfeld, Kelly Higgins and the whole support crew at the golf course were great hosts at their newly renovated clubhouse.

The cast of “Divorce Southern Style” put on 6 great performances and dedicated many hours to this very funny play. The show and set were a success because of their help in creating and attaining set props and pieces.

50th annual Tahoe Douglas St. Patrick's Day celebration

Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club’s 50th annual St. Patrick's Day event will be held on Saturday, March 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 10;00 p.m. at Harrah’s Convention
Center in Stateline, Nevada.

This year there will be some new twists as they hit this milestone event which started as a wine and cheese tasting above DART Liquor.

The club promises one-of-kind auction items, SURPRISE special performers, not one but TWO chances for a trip to Hawaii through our Hawaiian Raffle and their first ever Costume and Beard Contests, and much more.

This year's Community Hero Awards will go to teachers.

No Whooping Cough outbreak in South Lake Tahoe

Rumors were flying around schools and on social media in South Lake Tahoe this week about a Whooping Cough (pertussis) outbreak at Tahoe Valley Elementary. A 4th grade student became sick with symptoms that resemble pertussis, but that cannot be confirmed for two weeks.

Schools remind parents of new immunization rule for California

El Dorado County Public Health and school officials are reminding parents of a new California school immunization law, SB 277 that went into effect January 1, 2016. The law eliminates exemptions based on personal beliefs, including religious beliefs, for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school, kindergarten through grade 12.

Over 300 participate in the South Lake Tahoe Polio Walk

Community members joined Rotarians on Saturday as they walked the streets of South Lake Tahoe to show support and raise awareness of Rotary International’s effort to eradicate polio in the world. Over 300 people joined in the 3k walk which proceeded along Highway 50 in Stateline, past Edgewood Tahoe, by Lakeside Beach and back to the beginning at the corner of Stateline Avenue and Highway 50 at McP's Taphouse.

Rotarians clean out historic Osgood Toll House

Tahoe Douglas Rotarians spent Saturday cleaning out the historic Osgood Toll House, the oldest standing building in South Lake Tahoe. They took out hundreds of items including windows, doors, window frames, shutters and boards. After removing them they cataloged each item, cleaned and dried them and then stacked them back in the toll house.

Walk to End Polio being held in South Lake Tahoe

Everyone in the community is invited to Walk to End Polio, a 3k event being held in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 16, 2015. Join Rotarians, non-Rotarians, young and old, locals and visitors on a 3K walk to raise awareness, and funds, to end Polio.

If you were around in the middle of the 20th century, you may remember that tens of thousands of Americans were stricken by poliomyelitis, also known as Polio. This disease attacks the central nervous system and often leaves its victims partially or fully paralyzed.

Vaccinations: Are you Informed?

As a parent, we want our children to be safe. Certain safety measures are designed to help keep children safe, like child safety seats, seat belts, and toddler gates. However, some parents may overlook one critical component to keep children healthy and safe: vaccinations. Current vaccinations are the most effective and safest they have been in history and have saved millions of lives from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary builds kiosks at local parks

Members of the 60 member strong Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club recently completed two kiosks for the public to use in the South Lake Tahoe area. The first one is located at Kahle Community Park and the second one is at the new Van Sickle Bi-State Park. The kiosks are now used to hold information, including maps of trails and topography as well as pictures and events. The club took on the projects as part of the worldwide volunteer work day.
