First Meeting for County Charter Review Committee Since Release of Grand Jury Report

The El Dorado County Charter was at the center of the Grand Jury's released end of year report last week. Their findings will be discussed at the County Charter Review Committee meeting on Thursday evening in Placerville.

Final Vote Count in for El Dorado County District 5 Race: Sue Novasel and Kenny Curtzwiler Face Off in November

The results from the June 3rd election are in for El Dorado County Supervisor. Sue Novasel retained her lead by getting 28.47% of the vote (1,557 votes) and Kenny Curtzwiler came from behind and ended up with 17.87% of the vote (977 votes). Kevin Brown from Pollock Pines had the 2nd place lead after the precincts were counted but lost ground on the mail-ins and provisional votes. He ended up behind third place finisher Angela Swanson who was 10 votes behind Curtzwiler.

The top two vote getters move onto the General Election in November.

South Tahoe Now sent a questionnaire out to all of the candidates for El Dorado County Supervisor and Douglas County Sheriff. This is the last of the submitted responses. Candidates Sue Novasel, Kenny Curtzwiler and Angela Swanson were the only County Supervisor candidates to respond, and Douglas County Sheriff candidates Ron Pierini and Dave Brady were the only Sheriff candidates to respond. Supervisor Candidates Field Questions in South Lake Tahoe Forum

The first El Dorado Supervisor Candidate's Forum held in the Tahoe basin this election season was held Tuesday night.

With the June 3rd election just a few weeks away, this was a great opportunity for voters to become informed on the candidate's views on a myriad of topics from teamwork and cooperation to economic vitality and mental health issues.

South Lake Tahoe School Named Distinguished School; One of 424 in State

The Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESM) was selected as a 2014 California Distinguished School, an award given to just 5% of the state's schools.

“We are very proud of our programs and we are excited to be recognized as one of the top elementary schools in the state," said LTESM Principal Joel Dameral. "Our students, teachers and parents have worked hard to earn this Distinguished School recognition.”

House Blows Up in Pollock Pines

A man living in Pollock Pines called 911 at about 3 p.m. Saturday, saying he was going to blow up his house. As El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the home in the 6000 block of Pony Express Trail they heard an explosion. The residence was engulfed in flames and a male associated with the house was detained according to EDSO.

The unidentified male was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Nevada Man Arrested After Holding Gun to Teen's Head in Pollock Pines

A Fallon, Nevada man was arrested in El Dorado County on Wednesday evening after he allegedly held a semi-automatic handgun to a 15 year old's head, threatening to kill him.

Sheriff's officers were called out to Spruce Street in Pollock Pines on a report that shots were fired and people where arguing about a gun.

When deputies arrived, they identified a 15 year old male subject who reported that he had been thrown to the ground by Lawrence Stone of Fallon. Deputies reported that Stone fired multiple gunshots but nobody was injured.

Six Will Vie for Open El Dorado County Supervisor District 5 Spot , So Far

The deadline to turn in all required paperwork in the El Dorado County Supervisor race for District 5 is Friday, March 7 at 5 p.m. So far six candidates have provided their "SOQ" Statement of Qualifications. A seventh candidate, Michelle Sweeney, has taken out papers and may still turn them in before Friday's deadline.

Three Arrested For String of West Slope Burglaries

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department retrieved hundreds of stolen items from a home in Georgetown after investigating a series of burglaries in the towns of Pollock Pines, Camino, Placerville and Georgetown. They arrested three residents of a home after conducting a search of a home following discovery of a stolen car.

Jeri Acuna, a 37 year old woman was arrested for possession of stolen property and a stolen vehicle, Ryann Jana Leidel, a 32 year old female was arrested for two outstanding felony warrants. Parolee Tommie Richard Stover was arrested on two other felony warrants.

Firefighters get better handle on Kyburz Fire overnight, 40 percent contained

Firefighters made significant progress on the Kyburz Fire overnight, which is now 40 percent contained and remains at 160 acres as of Tuesday morning, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Laura Hierholzer.

The size of the Kyburz Fire, west of South Lake Tahoe in the Sierra, was adjusted from 600 acres down to 160 acres on Monday night because of better mapping, she said. Overnight the firefighters were able to get a better handle on it and stop the spread. A second outbuilding was listed as damaged or destroyed.

The size of the Kyburz Fire burning in El Dorado County has been adjusted from 600 acres down to 160 acres as of 9:53 p.m., according to the U.S. Forest Service. Highway 50 has been reopened under controlled measures between South Lake Tahoe and the Meyers area and Pollock Pines, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

El Dorado County women indicted in nationwide $60 million tax fraud refund scheme

In an indictment unsealed Tuesday, three El Dorado County women — Teresa Marie Marty, of Pollock Pines, Rebecca Bandera-Marty of Shingle Springs, and Pamela Harris of Placerville — were charged with conspiring to defraud the United States, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service announced.

In addition to the conspiracy count, Marty is charged with 33 counts of false claims against the United States, and Bandera-Marty is also charged in 16 of these counts.

West slope pair arrested; drugs found, stolen property recovered

At least $50,000 worth of stolen property was recovered, drugs were seized and two people were arrested on the West Slope of El Dorado County.
Detectives and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail served search warrants, including a storage container, at two different locations in Pollock Pines on March 21, said Lt. Tim Becker in a news release.

Smoke from Sept. 12 fire continues to makes its way into Meyers, South Lake Tahoe

Steady wind has pushed large amounts of smoke from a fire burning since Sept. 12 south of Highway 50 near Strawberry into Christmas Valley, Meyers and South Lake Tahoe this afternoon.

El Dorado Forest Service officials report the lightning-caused Long Fire, which has burned about 275 acres in timber and brush, is about 85 percent contained and poses no risk to life or property. The fire is burning at around 7,000 feet in the Packsaddle Pass area, three miles southwest of Strawberry in El Dorado County.
