Snow Day Monday for South Lake Tahoe students

Due to heavy snowfall this weekend, all schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will be closed on Monday, February 11 to allow the district, city, county, and state snow removal crews time to make roadways safe for students and staff to get to and from school.

Both Douglas County schools at Lake Tahoe, Whittell High and Zephyr Cove Elementary, are closed.

In anticipation of poor driving conditions and a blizzard warning in South Lake Tahoe, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District has closed schools for Monday, February 4, 2019.

Washoe County schools in Lake Tahoe at Incline Village are taking a digital day.

Douglas County schools at the lake have a snow day (ZCES and GWHS).

All Tahoe Truckee schools and offices are closed today.

Lake Tahoe Community College is closed.

Baby and two adults die in collision on Highway 50 east of Placerville

One baby and two adults died in a two-car collision on Highway 50 Tuesday evening east of Placerville.

On January 15, 2019 at approximately 6:27 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the crash near the Camino Heights Drive intersection. They say a 51-year-old man from Fremont, Calif. was driving a 2005 Volvo 560 westbound at a speed around 60 mph. At the same time, a 39-year-old Pollock Pines, Calif. man was heading eastbound in a 2017 Subaru Impreza at approximately 65 mph.

Over 24,000 ballots yet to be counted in El Dorado County

With a narrow margin in the ballot measure concerning the future of vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe, and other races still close, everyone is awaiting the release of more results from Tuesday's election.

You'll still have to wait a bit longer.

On Friday, November 9, El Dorado County Elections will post the next round of results, but it won't be the last as there are over 24,000 ballots yet to count.

Update - 1:20 a.m. 11/7/18: With a large voter turnout the processing of ballots is taking longer than normal. A power outage caused by a car hitting a power line near Blackwood Avenue caused some excitement for voters but did not delay the count as there are procedures in place for such an incident.

Two new electric school buses to be added to LTUSD fleet

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Does this bus look any different than your usual school bus? Well it is. The little turquoise bird above the door with the electric cord tells all. It is an all electric bus!

Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) received a grant earlier this year to purchase two electric school buses. Tuesday was the first test drive of the production vehicle and we expect a few more test drives this winter If all goes well LTUSD expects to have the two buses in service by next school year.

Mountain lion cub euthanized after wandering into Pollock Pines bakery

Was it the cakes, cupcakes or muffins that brought a mountain lion cub into a Pollock Pines bakery on Monday? A local baker found the 40-50-pound feline inside the shop after it walked through the doors.

Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) arrived at the bakery after a passerby met the bakery employee outside the shop and called 911.

According to EDSO Sgt. Anthony Prencipe, about 10 people had gathered outside the bakery to watch the unlikely customer.

PG&E cutting power to 70,000 Sierra Foothills customers due to fire danger

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is in emergency mode in extreme fire-risk areas in Butte, Sierra, Placer, Nevada, El Dorado, Amador, Plumas, Calaveras and Yuba counties due to Red Flag warnings by the National Weather Service. These shutoffs will affect about 70,000 customers.

South Lake Tahoe is served by Liberty Utilities and not part of the utility company's plan to start proactively shutting off power for safety as early as 5 p.m. Sunday and continuing through the evening.

New shuttle and one-way traffic to help alleviate Apple Hill congestion

Fall in El Dorado County means several things, but on the top of many lists is a trip to Apple Hill during the month of October.

Weekend crowds are already heading to the farms, wineries and breweries from Placerville to Pollock Pines, but the thousands of cars that make the trip each week during the month of October have prompted transportation, farming, tourism, safety and County officials to work together to alleviate the weekend gridlock on area roads.

Eldorado National Forest consolidating Visitor Services along Highway 50 corridor

The Eldorado National Forest is consolidating Visitor Information Services (VIS) on the Highway 50 corridor. All visitor services currently located at the Pacific Ranger District three miles east of Pollock Pines will move to the Placerville Ranger District in Camino on October 15. The Placerville Ranger District location at 4260 Eight Mile road, Camino (take Highway 50 exit 54) will handle Desolation Wilderness permits, the Pacific District recreation information and rental cabins in addition to their regular visitor information services at that point.

Flu vaccine clinics in South Lake Tahoe and West Slope

The 2018/19 flu season almost upon us and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is recommending an annual influenza vaccination for everyone six months and older with any licensed, age-appropriate flu vaccine.

They said flu vaccines have been updated to better match circulating viruses (the B/Victoria component was changed and the influenza A(H3N2) component was updated).

Suspect sought in Pollock Pines bank robbery

The U.S. Bank inside Safeway in Pollock Pines was robbed on Tuesday evening just before 7:00 p.m. At that time, an unidentified white male adult entered the store, disguised with glued on facial hair, sunglasses, and a red bandana over his head, which covered what is believed to be a long haired wig. The male was last seen wearing a bright yellow jacket, tan cargo pants, and dark shoes.

69th annual Hwy 50 Wagon Train rides through South Lake Tahoe

The Highway 50 Wagon Train will once again traverse the Sierra this week, just as the pioneers of the 1800s once did. People seeking riches headed west after gold was discovered near Placerville in 1849, but their routes were varied as very few had traveled that direction before them.

Man found deceased in El Dorado County river

On May 1 at around 11:15 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) was notified by Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) that they had received a distress call from one of their contracted security officers who said he was in his vehicle in a river.

That officer, 33-year-old Jared Cluff of Sacramento, was near the SMUD Powerhouse on Peavine Ridge Road east of Pollock Pines, but his exact location was unknown.

Highway 50 reopens, closing at times for avalanche control

March 16 2:20PM update: Crews have fixed the downed power line and Highway 50 is reopened in the area. Traffic will be held at times at Twin Bridges and Meyers for avalanche control.

It is a mess along Highway 50 through the Sierra today due to spinouts and downed power lines. The road has been closed in both directions near Silver Fork as crews work on getting a power line off the roadway. Caltrans estimates reopening at 3:01 p.m. at this time.

Men wanted in connection to El Dorado County homicide captured in Carson City

3/15/18 UPDATE: Two men arrested early Wednesday at a Carson City home have been identified and now face murder charges in El Dorado County, Calif.

Chase Bomar, 19, and Cody Bomar, 21, were taken into custody after Carson City Sheriff’s Office SWAT responded to assist El Dorado County authorities at a home in the 1200 block of Palo Verde Drive.

The men were wanted in connection to the fatal stabbing of Jeremy Fortuin, 42, of Pollock Pines. The stabbing happened on Pony Express Trail in Cedar Grove on the west slope of El Dorado County.

USFS hosts Desolation Wilderness volunteer workshop in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is looking for hard-working, dedicated volunteers that are interested in helping to preserve one of our nation’s most beautiful wilderness areas, Desolation Wilderness. Four potential candidates so far for El Dorado County Supervisor 5th District

Candidate season has already started for not only the State of California but also El Dorado County.

So far, for the El Dorado County Supervisor representing Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Tahoma and Pollock Pines (District 5) four candidates have taken out papers.

Current Supervisor Sue Novasel, local businessman Ken Curtzwiler, former Supervisor Norma Santiago, and transportation technology and land use expert Jeffrey Spencer have all taken out papers during the filing period which began February 12.

El Dorado County vacation rental meeting rescheduled in South Lake Tahoe

March 3, 2018 is the rescheduled special board meeting that was postponed after their Feb. 1 meeting had to be shut down due to an overcapacity crowd wanted to participate.

El Dorado County man dies after going into raw water conduit

The body of a Pollock Pines man was located just after 8:00 a.m. Tuesday after going missing in an El Dorado Irrigation District (EID) untreated raw water conduit on Monday at about 4:00 p.m.

Tory Robert Mayes, a 34-year-old from Pollock Pines, went into the EID’s Camino Conduit pipe that carries raw water from Jenkinson Lake to EID’s water treatment plant 1.5 miles away.

No moratorium on vacation rentals in El Dorado County

Tuesday's El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting was just as all other meetings about vacation home rentals have been: A full house and a large contingent passionately representing both sides of the issue.

Supervisor Shiva Frentzen sought conceptual approval of an urgency ordinance to place a moratorium on the issuance of new vacation home rental (VHR) permits in the unincorporated portions of the County located in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Chain controls up as storm moves out of Lake Tahoe

A Winter Weather Advisory is up for Lake Tahoe until 1:00 p.m. Snow overnight and this morning have left for slight conditions and road controls, so use caution as you drive in the area. There is still a 40 percent chance of lingering snow showers this evening.

Christmas tree permits all sold out in Lake Tahoe Basin

It took less than two weeks for the U.S. Forest Service to sell out of Christmas tree cutting permits. Since November 13, the first day of sales, 2,250 permits were sold from the USFS offices in South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village and Tahoe City. No additional permits will be authorize for this season.

Permits may still be available in locations outside of the Tahoe Basin. Call ahead to see if they still have the $10 permits on hand:

Christmas Tree permits go on sale November 13

The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and the Eldorado National Forest (ENF) will begin the sale of Christmas tree permits on Monday, November 13, 2017. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar trees up to six inches in diameter at the base in designated cutting areas. Trees must be cut on the forest where the permit was purchased (the ENF is south and west of the Lake Tahoe Basin, on the west slope).

Wind fuels lightning caused fire west of Lake Tahoe

9:30AM Update 10/11 - Fire was active last night as it slowly backed down the mountain towards the indirect check lines. The fire is in remote country and not threatening any structures.

So far, 50 acres have burned and it is 10 percent contained.

The smoke from the Table fire is visible from Highway 50 and the Tahoe Basin. This is a lightning start from a previous storm that Sunday's high wind event activated.

Note: the smoke blanketing the Placerville and Pollock Pines areas is not from the local fires.

Pollock Pines man identified as victim in deadly Spooner Summit crash

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has released more information in Saturday's deadly motorcycle crash in Lake Tahoe that claimed the life of a California man.

At approximately 11:54 a.m., NHP troopers were called out to the scene of a serious motorcycle crash about one mile east of Spooner Summit.

Pollock Pines resident Justin A. Breese, 19, was riding his 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on US50 when he lost control and was ejected. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Speed may be a contributing factor in this crash according to NHP.

El Dorado County man indicted for distributing drug that killed minor

Almost five years after a 15-year-old El Dorado High School student died after ingesting a designer drug, a Camino man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for his death.

Elijah Lee Richter, 26, is charged with knowingly and intentionally distributing 25i-nBOME, the drug that killed Alejandro Nunez Avila in a Pollock Pines home on on September 8, 2012.

Richter had been arrested at the time with Jesse Howard Roberts, then 21. Roberts has already convicted in the case and sentenced to six years. He currently is listed as being an inmate at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, Calif.

Low cost flu clinics in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Nursing, will begin conducting low-cost community flu shot clinics on September 27, 2017, with additional clinics offered through November.

Annual Wagon Train skips South Lake Tahoe this year

For 67 years the annual re-creation of the historic wagon train rides across the Sierra Nevada has gone through South Lake Tahoe as they made their way to Placerville, but this year they are skipping the City.

SMUD planning to expand cloud seeding over the Sierra

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is planning to more than double their current cloud seeding program over the American River watershed from the current 190 square miles to 444 square miles.

Since 1968, SMUD has been involved in the practice of cloud seeding in El Dorado, Amador, and Placer counties to benefit electricity generation in the Upper American River Project (UARP) in Eldorado National Forest.

One dies in Pollock Pines house fire

Firefighters responding to a house fire on in Pollock Pines Friday morning found a body in the home as they were extinguishing the fire.

El Dorado County Fire responded to the 5:30 a.m. fire on North Street.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) responded to begin an investigation along with the El Dorado County fire investigators. At this point the decedent cannot be identified according to Sgt. Tasha Thompson of EDSO.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Pollock Pines woman sentenced to 10 years after $9M tax fraud scheme

Teresa Marty will be spending the next ten years in prison after causing the IRS to pay more than $9 million in false refunds.

The 57-year-old Pollock Pines woman owned Advanced Financial Services (AFS), a tax return preparation business located in Placerville. She conspired with her office manager, Pamela Harris and Rebecca Bandera-Marty to file more than 250 fraudulent federal tax returns claiming more than $60 million in refunds.

McCallum releases resignation letter as community leaders bid her farewell

Judi McCallum, the longtime El Dorado County employee who served as the assistant to the District 5 Board of Supervisors for 26 years, has shared her official resignation letter with South Tahoe Now.

Informed drivers one way to prevent Sunday gridlock in South Lake Tahoe

Many drivers plan ahead when planning their travel along highways in interstates across the county. Want to miss rush hour? Don't hit that city in the morning and late afternoon. Mad dash to Santa Cruz on a warm Saturday? Leave early in the morning or go the night before to miss the backup of traffic.

Smooth travel over Highway 50 in the Sierra requires the same planning or one will get stuck in heavy traffic on Friday evenings heading to Lake Tahoe, or Sunday mornings leaving Lake Tahoe (or the day after a holiday).

Tahoe Truckee School District schools have joined Lake Tahoe Unified schools and are closed today, Monday, March 6.

Douglas County schools at the lake are open but starting 90 minutes late and students will be picked up at main stops only.

Incline Village schools are on a two-hour delay.

Pollock Pines elementary and middle school are having a snow day as well. El Dorado High School is on a two-hour delay.

El Dorado County man drowns after car goes into American River

A Silver Fork man was on his way to work in Pollock Pines Friday when it is believed his vehicle crashed into the American River, sending him and his vehicle into the water.

Digger Gooch, 37, was westbound on Highway 50 February 10 when deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) believe he crashed into the river which was moving rapidly due to heavy rains in the area.

Weekend traffic congestion in Meyers to be discussed at Monday meeting

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel is inviting all county residents to join in a discussion about the traffic congestion in Meyers every weekend and holiday, hampering locals in their movement along surface roads and the highway.

As visitors depart South Lake Tahoe, many have become aware of side streets via google and phone apps, thus finding another route that they think is getting them around the backup.
