Father John Grace, former pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe, passed away on May 4, 2019, at the age of 98. Father Grace had injured himself in a fall while on a walk near his Al Tahoe residence a few days before his death.

He was born September 18, 1920, to John and Cecilia Grace in the small coal-mining village of The Commons, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine (“Rena”) and Maureen. At the time of his death, Father Grace was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Sacramento.

We are Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church. This is a letter to our community to say that we are still here. Yes, there was a fire that damaged our building but not “the church” (our congregation). We are currently meeting for worship at Temple Bat Yam on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. Our church continues to thrive, thanks in a large part to the outpouring of love, concern, and support from you, the community of South Lake Tahoe.

September is National Suicide Awareness month and I would like to share part of a talk I have given to the Military.

A SOLDIER WITH PTSD FELL IN A HOLE and couldn’t get out.
A Senior NCO went by and the Soldier with PTSD called out for help. The Senior NCO yelled at, told him to suck it up dig deep & drive on and then threw him a shovel. But the Soldier with PTSD could not suck it up and drive on so he dug the hole deeper.

The first national call to prayer came in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. Since then, a call to prayer has continued from President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863 to an annual national day of prayer signed by a joint resolution by Congress in 1952 that was signed by President Truman.

Now, the National Day of Prayer is held on the first Thursday in May.

The 3rd annual Spiritual Summit in South Lake Tahoe will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat.

Lake Tahoe area supporters of those protesting the pipeline in Standing Rock, ND will be holding a benefit concert at the Tahoe Biltmore on the North Shore on Saturday, December 3 starting at 1:00 p.m.

The family friendly event will feature musicians along with members of local Native American tribes. Also on tap is a arts and crafts area with face painting, raffle and silent auction. Tickets are $20 for adults (12 and under are free) and available by clicking HERE.

Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery are returning to South Lake Tahoe from April 1 to April 6 with a full schedule of ancient and colorful participatory activities, Dharma talks, meditations, and cultural rituals to promote inner healing.

Events, unless otherwise noted, will be at the Blue Angel Cafe, located at 1132 Ski Run Blvd.

All events are donation based and all proceeds will go towards funding the construction of the Phukhang College House at Gaden Shartse, which houses over 600 exiled monks in the Tibetan Refugee Zone in India.

The National Little League pledge, written by Peter J. McGovern in 1954, reads as follows:

I trust in God
I love my country
And will respect its laws
I will play fair
And strive to win
But win or lose
I will always do my best

It has long been a tradition in South Lake Tahoe where players recite the pledge prior to every Major Division Little League game.

That tradition ended this year as the local Board of Directors decided to remove the words "God" and "country" from the pledge so it would read like this:

I will play fair
And strive to win
But win or lose

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval joined more than two dozen soldiers and airman, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and families Saturday to pay respects by jogging in a memorial run in Carson City to commemorate the four victims who died at the International House of Pancakes shooting on Sept. 6, 2011.

Shooting survivor Sgt. 1st Class Jeremy Mock and Gen. Michael Hanifan, commander of the Nevada Guard, led the pack of runners and walkers on the 5K route from the restaurant to the Guard complex on Fairview Drive in Carson City.

The Vagina Monologues returns for its 11th year here in South Lake Tahoe Feb. 22-23 at 7 p.m.
Come laugh, cry and help to stop violence against women. The Monologues are a fundraiser for CASA, Live Violence Free, Tahoe Youth and Family Services and The Zawadisha Fund. Tickets are $15 and are available through CASA at (530) 573-3072 or at the door.
The event will be at the Blue Angel Cafe, 1132 Ski Run.

Unity at the Lake hosts Unity World Day of Prayer, silent prayer vigil, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 1195 Rufus Allen Blvd. (across from Rec. Center) in South Lake Tahoe. The entire community is invited to come by during that time (for as long as you wish) and center in an energy of love and peace, which you can then send out to the world. At 5:30pm, we will be doing a “labyrinth walk for world peace.” Accompanied by beautiful music, we will walk the labyrinth on Unity’s property carrying placards that list all the countries of the world.

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will begin its July 17 meeting with a Hindu invocation with verse from the world's oldest existing scripture, the first time since its 1850 incorporation. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the opening prayer from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the leaders. After Sanskrit delivery, he then will read the English translation of the prayer. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

The annual “Tree of Remembrance” Interfaith Ceremony hosted by Barton Hospice and Foundation will take place friday, December 9, from 6:00pm - 7:00pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carson Valley. This event gives attendees the opportunity to reflect on the memories they share and celebrate the lives of those they have lost. Barton Hospice encourages everyone to take this opportunity to honor those they will forever cherish. Attendees will be able to say the name of the person in remembrance and light a candle in their honor. Music and song will be performed by OneVoice of Unity.
