What to do in Lake Tahoe When There Isn't Much Snow? Bike or Hike at Rabe Meadow

The following originally ran in South Tahoe Now on January 21, 2014 as part of a series of stories about winter activities when there isn't much snow:

Since there is a lack of snow through the Sierra Nevada, visitors and locals in the Lake Tahoe basin are enjoying things that are normally reserved for the summer months.

South Lake Tahoe not immune from fake vacation rental scams

Imagine packing up the car and heading up to South Lake Tahoe to enjoy a week at the large vacation home you just rented, only to find out that the house isn't yours to use when you arrive.

That scenario happened over the recent holiday when not one, not two, but four different groups thought they rented a home on Bonita Road near Heavenly Mountain Resort. All of the groups found a home for rent on Craigslist, a popular website used for buying, selling and renting.

South Lake Tahoe vacation home rental policies examined

Many South Lake Tahoe residents find themselves dreading weekends, especially during ski season and the summer. Why you may ask? Because of the throngs of people headed for the vacation rental homes in their neighborhoods.

It was discovered that a South Lake Tahoe homeowner had been renting out his vacation home since at least 2008 without paying transient occupancy tax (TOT). An audit of the City's Vacation Home Rental program discovered the violation, and when the homeowner refused to comply so a criminal investigation was conducted.

When he got the call that someone saw Gardner near Anderson Bike Rentals, Milham and Fish & Wildlife showed up with a cage full of food. They safely got Gardner into the cage.

County meeting with vacation home owners to create "Good Neighbor Program"

It's 11 p.m. on a Saturday night in the middle of summer and you've just turned out the lights to go to bed. But, you're finding this an impossible task because of the blaring music coming from the vacation rental next door.

It's midnight on Friday night in January. You're catching the end of a good movie in front of the fire but are finding it hard to hear the TV in your own home. The loud talking and screaming from the young adults in the hottub next door is louder that it should be.

Police Chief’s Monthly Report to the Community

Marijuana is a major concern for many in our City. As part of the City Code, our City Council provided for a safer community by allowing marijuana grow operations only after a permit is obtained. The permit process provides for a building official to inspect for things like:

1. Safe wiring—adding large number of “grow lights” overburdens conventional electric outlets and can cause fires.

South Lake Tahoe Business Gets Washed Up for Snow

It may not be Mother Nature or the weatherman you want to thank for the storm that is coming into South Lake Tahoe today. It just might be the team at Pyramid Peak Ski and Snowboard Rentals.

Why you ask?

"It always rains or snows when you wash your car," said owner Geoff Bottini. He told SouthTahoeNow that when they heard a weather system was arriving that they figured they'd help it along by offering a free car wash. They advertised on their store windows and facebook page about the 10 am to 4 pm event.

Back Roads - Lake Tahoe to Apple Hill via Highway 4

My daughter and I had been planning our annual Apple Hill trek for several days when I decided to change it up a bit. Since my free time is so rare I figured why not include a visit to our favorite little town Sutter Creek? And then, since we're doing that, might as well throw in a drive down beautiful Highway 4! Since the portion of the road we'll be covering is closed after the first big snow we had to do it! The day was plotted on a map in my head with some verification on google maps. The map said our little trip was going to take 5 hours and 10 minutes and cover 225 miles.

Is now the time to invest in Lake Tahoe?

Now is a great time to invest in Lake Tahoe, whether it's a vacation rental, long term rental, multi-units/apartments or retail buildings. With the continued low interest rates and property prices still considered low, now is the time to pull the trigger before it's too late. I advise my clients that waiting will not help their situation. The biggest challenge is the lack of homes for sale. The key to to watch for new listings as they get posted to the MLS system.

Six Reasons Housing Inventory is declining

According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal there are 6 reasons why there is a declining inventory of homes for sale in the United States. These 6 reasons also apply to Lake Tahoe, on both the California side and Nevada sides of the Lake.

Their 6 reasons why housing inventory is declining

1.  Many homeowners are underwater (owe more than their home is worth) so they are unlikely to sell until home values rise more than they have already. More than 10 million home owners are in this position in the US.

Looking beyond gambling, South Lake Tahoe weighs its future

On the eastern edge of South Lake Tahoe, across the street from the high-rise casinos in Nevada, sits the foundation of what was meant to be a $400 million convention center, hotel and retail complex.
That was before developers ran out of money nearly five years ago. Today, the 11- acre site along Highway 50 is a concrete wasteland locals call "the hole in the ground."
"They just abandoned it," said Ulysses Juarez, 23, one of a group of young skateboarders who climbed the chain-link fence earlier this month to practice their moves.

Revenues have been sizzling all summer for businesses that give residents and visitors to Greater Reno-Tahoe an escape from sweltering 100-degree heat.
