The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is currently reviewing the opening brief filed by regional plan litigants who, according to the Agency, are continuing their misinformation campaign about the updated environmental plan that is supported widely by environmental advocates, business groups, and state and local leaders.

Scientists today presented research findings and recommendations to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board that address Lake Tahoe’s aquatic nearshore environment and the heightened interest in understanding factors contributing to its apparent deterioration.

With thousands of motorcyclists expected for Street Vibrations there is extra caution urged on public roadways. As of noon today there have been 3 accidents involving bikers on the road in Lake Tahoe and Carson City, resulting in 1 death and 4 hospitalizations.

Two people were hospitalized after a crash shortly before 10 a.m. at North Carson Street and Medical Parkway. A man was flown by Care Flight to Renown hospital; the other person was taken by ambulance to Renown.

The Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee is concluding a survey to discover what the public thinks are the most important actions people can take to help protect the Lake Tahoe region. Results of the survey will be used to inform the creation of a new Tahoe area Environmental Stewardship Messaging Campaign. Individuals have until 5 p.m. Monday, September 16th to weigh in and can take the survey online.

Scientists continue to remove invading warm-water fish from Lake Tahoe, while new research indicates some of the tiniest bugs that live on Tahoe’s bottom are disappearing at an alarming rate.

Those were among the research efforts conducted by experts at University of Nevada, Reno that were demonstrated at the lake Monday and two weeks before the Lake Tahoe Summit, an annual event celebrating decades of work to protect the landmark alpine lake.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today co-sponsored, along with Senator Dean Heller (R-NV), and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act that was introduced today by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act continues the federal commitment to Lake Tahoe by authorizing $415 million over 10 years to improve Lake Tahoe’s water clarity, reduce risks from catastrophic wildfires, combat invasive species and restore and protect the environment in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Sandboxes have come a long way. A new interactive, augmented-reality exhibit brings watersheds to life at the University of California, Davis' Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nev.

Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allowusers to create virtual topography in real time, make it "rain" and watch where the water flows.

The Lake Tahoe Outreach Collaborative is launching a survey to find out what the public thinks are the most important things people can do to help protect Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe Community College has started a brand-new scholarship in honor of a former instructor who passed away in late May. The Carl Young Memorial Earth Science Scholarship is being established to honor the meteorology teacher, who died when he and two colleagues were chasing tornadoes just outside Oklahoma City.

This new Earth Science scholarship will be the first of its kind at LTCC according to geology and earth science instructor Scott Valentine, who worked with Mr. Young’s parents to establish the scholarship.

Beginning Tuesday, June 25, The UC Davis Lake Tahoe Environmental Research Center will kick off the Green Thumb Workshop Series with a talk about "Food Gardening 101" featuring Christy Daugherty, formerly from the U.S. Forest Service and now part of the Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners.

National recognition has been given to the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species watercraft inspection program once again, this time for the excellence of the public outreach campaign used to educate boaters about the program.

The campaign, directed by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Tahoe Resource Conservation District, received a Silver Anvil award Thursday from the Public Relations Society of America—the nation’s most prestigious public relations award.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science will host the fourth annual Lake Tahoe Bird Festival on Saturday, June 8, followed by the third annual Native Species Festival on Sunday, June 9.

Residents and visitors are invited to attend these free family events from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

Lake Tahoe Community College is holding a visioning session on Saturday, June 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the LTCC Board Room next to the Library. The community is invited to contribute to a conversation about the future of the College as we move toward 2020.

Changes in state regulations are forcing LTCC to change what we do and who we serve. These changes have created challenges that must be overcome if LTCC is to continue serving the communities of Lake Tahoe.

There was a story in this week's USA Today that caught my interest and made me research facts here in Lake Tahoe. The article said that the number of signed contracts to buy homes in the U.S. rose in March to the highest level in 3 years.

115 homes are currently in escrow on the California side of Lake Tahoe and 37 homes are in this status on the Nevada side. The Lake Tahoe California figures are 10% higher than last year at this time and the Lake Tahoe Nevada figures are up 60%!

Several Lake Tahoe area nonprofit organizations and agencies will receive financial aid this year through partnerships announced Monday by the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

The partnerships are aimed to address issues identified in each of the Lake Tahoe area communities, said Karen Barsell, CEO and president of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

Fifteen students from San Diego State University will forego the typical spring break of beaches and relaxation to teach thousands of children in a small mountain community how to save energy and save the environment.

Members of the student organization CALPIRG Energy Service Corps will travel to South Lake Tahoe, Calif., from March 31 through April 5 to spread the word on energy savings.

South Lake Tahoe Firefighters participated and raised $6,000 in the second annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation event in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, March 8. The St. Baldrick’s foundation was formed in 2005 and surpassed $100 million in donations last year for childhood cancer research across the nation. The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department put together one of several teams from the community who all rallied together to raise money.
