Plastic Bag Ban Goes Into Effect In South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday

A ban on single use plastic bags goes into effect in the city limits of South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, January 15, 2014.

Local grocery stores have been preparing for the new ordinance which was voted on by the City Council on October 15, 2013.

City of South Lake Tahoe Giving Away Lead Safe Tahoe Shopping Bags

The single use plastic bag ban goes into effect on January 15 in South Lake Tahoe. In order to help people with the transition, the city's Lead Safe Tahoe team is giving away free reusable shopping bags on the following dates:

January 13 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. @ Raley's at 4000 Lake Tahoe Blvd. (near Stateline)
January 14 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. @ Safeway on Johnson Blvd.
January 15 from 1:00-3:30 p.m. @ Raley's on 1040 Emerald Bay Rd. (The "Y")
January 15 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. @ South Lake Tahoe Grocery Outlet on 2358 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Pedestrian Struck and Killed in New Year's Day Accident on Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe

An unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a SUV in front of Whiskey Dicks and the Town and Country Center Wednesday night around 8 pm.

The SUV was being driven eastbound on Highway 50 by 19 year old local Uriel Ortiz. Ortiz was not under the influence and appeared to be driving the speed limit.

The much awaited for, and greatly hyped up day is finally here. Today was the day over 1 billion iPhone users around the world have been anticipating. Unless you haven't been tuned into the news or commercials, you know today was Apple's release of their iPhone 5s and 5c, which came 2 days after their release of their new iOS 7 operating system software.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel Invests $5 Million in Renovations

What many locals remember as Embassy Suites, the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel is still a thriving and vibrant part of the community. On April 1 of this year, the hotel owners, Ken Corporation, Ltd and management team, PHR Management, announced that they would be dropping the franchise agreement with Embassy Suites and become the Lake Tahoe Resort. Since then, they have been investing $5 million in property renovations and upgrading all 400 rooms in the nine-story all-suite hotel. The work is taking place in phases with completion planned for the winter season.

Police look for man who robbed South Lake Tahoe bank

South Lake Tahoe police are looking for a man who robbed the El Dorado Savings Bank in the 3400 block of Lake Tahoe Boulevard Thursday at around 2 p.m.
The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s, with a black hoodie and snow googles. He is described as being slight to average build with scruffy facial fair and a black patch of hair on his left cheek, similar to a mole. He was wearing blue pants, black jacket with leather sleeves, similar to a letterman's jacket, South Lake Tahoe police report. No weapon was seen.

Study: South Shore Lake Tahoe Loop Road plan would contribute up to $25 million annually

(Stateline, Nev.) – A recent US Highway 50 economic analysis indicates that a completed downtown area outlined within the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization project (aka Loop Road), City of South Lake Tahoe’s General Area Plan and the South Shore Vision Plan would provide for an annual retail sales increase of $16 million to $25 million.

Kirkwood celebrates seven feet of snow and 40th anniversary New Year's Eve

With seven feet of new snow in the past four days, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is living up to its reputation for the deepest and driest snow around Lake Tahoe and is well on its way to exceeding its average annual snowfall total of 600 inches.

So far the 2012-13 season snowfall total for Kirkwood is 210 inches, and more is on the way with storms heading into the New Year in time for the mountain's 40th anniversary.

The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund presented a $12,850 check today to the Tahoe Transportation District for the Rabe Meadow Bike Path, a key segment of the proposed new bike and pedestrian route around Lake Tahoe called the Lake Tahoe Bikeway. Kirkwood opens 40th season with four feet of snow

Kirkwood Mountain Resort opened its 40th anniversary season when the lifts began turning at 9 a.m. Friday, five days earlier than its originally-scheduled opening day. Kirkwood opened with one chairlift and five trails, accessing 40 total acres.
“The last two storms that have rolled through the Sierra have dropped a combined four feet of snow at Kirkwood, allowing us to open early for all our passionate skiers and riders,” said Casey Blann, general manager of Kirkwood. “This will be a great start to the 40th anniversary season at Kirkwood, and the first with Vail Resorts.”

Heavenly at Lake Tahoe celebrates with early opening

Lifts began turning at Heavenly Mountain Resort at 9 a.m. Wednesday, signaling the return of winter to Lake Tahoe and the region's ski and snowboard destination. Early-season storms combined with the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system have given Heavenly the ability to stage its earliest opening since 2004-05. All access to the mountain at this time is through the Heavenly Gondola and Tamarack Express.

Powerful early-season storms combined with the area’s largest snowmaking operations have allowed Vail Resorts’ Lake Tahoe mountains – Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort – to open early with 111 acres. Recommendations Regarding 'Economic Revitalization' for South Shore Lake Tahoe

After attending the State of the South Shore Economy Public Forum held on October 23rd, 2012 I was inspired to draft a response to the questions about economic revitalization that were asked at the meeting. I feel like our group had many salient ideas that were not properly represented. Also, I have noticed that people are quick to offer ideas like “reduce unemployment”, “beautify the city”, and “improve recreation”, but they are typically unable to offer suggestions on how to make those ideas a reality.

Nevada Posts 26th Consecutive Taxable Sales Increase In August

CARSON CITY – Nevada recorded its 26th consecutive month of taxable sales increases in August, when consumers spent $3.7 billion on goods and services for a 7.6 percent jump over August 2011, the state Department of Taxation reported today.
The last decrease in statewide taxable sales came in June 2010, when a 0.3 percent decline was reported over June 2009.
Taxable sales grew by 8.1 percent in Clark County and jumped double-digits in Washoe County to 10.5 percent.

Nevada Taxable Sales Sees Modest But Solid Gain In April

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s taxable sales climbed by 5.1 percent in April over April 2011, continuing a 22 consecutive month trend of positive numbers for the important economic indicator, the state Department of Taxation reported this week.
The $3.5 billion in taxable purchases in April were buoyed by double-digit gains in several major categories, including construction; up 16.1 percent, merchant wholesalers-durable goods, up 10.2 percent; and motor vehicle and parts dealers, up 10.5 percent.
