An unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a SUV in front of Whiskey Dicks and the Town and Country Center Wednesday night around 8 pm.

The SUV was being driven eastbound on Highway 50 by 19 year old local Uriel Ortiz. Ortiz was not under the influence and appeared to be driving the speed limit.

Cold weather and snow this week is allowing Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort to open for the 2013-14 season on Friday, December 6, 2013 with early season conditions and very limited terrain. The ski resort will operate the Easy Rider Express chairlift which will give skiers and snowboarders access to the right half of Broadway trail. This is a green run and will have small to medium rail features, giving guests a chance to get their park legs back underneath them.

On April 1 of this year, the hotel owners, Ken Corporation, Ltd and management team, PHR Management, announced that they would be dropping the franchise agreement with Embassy Suites and become the Lake Tahoe Resort. Since then, they have been investing $5 million in property renovations and upgrading all 400 rooms in the nine-story all-suite hotel. The work is taking place in phases with completion planned for the winter season.

(Stateline, Nev.) – A recent US Highway 50 economic analysis indicates that a completed downtown area outlined within the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization project (aka Loop Road), City of South Lake Tahoe’s General Area Plan and the South Shore Vision Plan would provide for an annual retail sales increase of $16 million to $25 million.

A dedication ceremony of the new Genoa Vista Trail will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at at the north end of the trail on Foothill Road across from Carson Street. With seven feet of new snow in the past four days, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is living up to its reputation for the deepest and driest snow around Lake Tahoe and is well on its way to exceeding its average annual snowfall total of 600 inches.

So far the 2012-13 season snowfall total for Kirkwood is 210 inches, and more is on the way with storms heading into the New Year in time for the mountain's 40th anniversary.

Building on the reputation as one of the nation’s top terrain park resorts, Sierra Resort™ will offer a small to medium jib park on Broadway consisting of multiple features including new boxes and rails, giving eager guests a chance to get their park legs back underneath them.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort opened its 40th anniversary season when the lifts began turning at 9 a.m. Friday, five days earlier than its originally-scheduled opening day. Kirkwood opened with one chairlift and five trails, accessing 40 total acres.
“The last two storms that have rolled through the Sierra have dropped a combined four feet of snow at Kirkwood, allowing us to open early for all our passionate skiers and riders,” said Casey Blann, general manager of Kirkwood. “This will be a great start to the 40th anniversary season at Kirkwood, and the first with Vail Resorts.”

Lifts began turning at Heavenly Mountain Resort at 9 a.m. Wednesday, signaling the return of winter to Lake Tahoe and the region's ski and snowboard destination. Early-season storms combined with the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system have given Heavenly the ability to stage its earliest opening since 2004-05. All access to the mountain at this time is through the Heavenly Gondola and Tamarack Express.

The Tahoe Transportation District will host its second public workshop to discuss the US 50, Lake Tahoe South Shore Community Revitalization project, Wednesday, November 7, at Embassy Suites from 1-3 p.m.

The Lake Tahoe workshop will provide background on the project, outline goals and solicit input from individuals throughout the community. The open house format allows for members of the community to participant in the workshop anytime between workshop hours.

The Lake Tahoe Sierra Century Ride 2012 is slated for Saturday, September 22, offering incredible scenery and excellent exercise, all benefiting a great cause. Riders can choose a 100-mile, 60-mile or 30-mile route and enjoy breathtaking vistas and the crisp mountain air of autumn in the Sierra.

All of the routes start and finish in The Village at Squaw Valley, and all benefit the music students at North Tahoe Middle and High schools. While the event's moniker includes the word ‘century,' the 100-miler is just one of three rides offered in this annual Tahoe event.

Squaw Valley welcomes the world premiere of Further, the second installment in the Jeremy Jones snowboard movie trilogy by award-winning producers Teton Gravity Research. Presented by O’Neill, “Further” will open at Squaw Valley’s KT Base Bar Friday, September 7. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., show starts at 8:30 p.m.

New this summer, Squaw Valley is excited to host the resort’s first Full Moon Party at High Camp on Thursday, August 2. Slated to take place amidst the brightest full moon of the summer, the party will feature a line-up of five DJs playing from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. on the mountaintop. Party goers will be able to watch the brilliant full moon rise over Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains, and dance under the night sky as the stars come out.

This July, Squaw Valley saddles up again for Wild West Weekend with a host of western-themed events high in the Sierra. Wild West Weekend offers adults and kids the opportunity to channel their inner-cowboys at the High Camp Corral for western-style fun. Pony rides, a petting zoo, western shoot-outs, and two days of live music are all part of the western weekend on July 21 and July 22.
