A free public forum is being held by the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinating Committee on the north shore next week.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Writers’ Series is celebrating National Poetry Month on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the Aspen Room with poets June Sylvester Saraceno and Laura Wetherington. These award-winning poets will read from their works, engage the audience with a Q and A, and sign copies of their books. The event is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase.

Readers will discover “deftly-crafted narrative moments that unreel like snippets of cinema” in the poems of June Sylvester Saraceno’s new book, entitled “Of Dirt and Tar.”

The second, full-length collection of poetry by Saraceno, the English department chair at Sierra Nevada College, will be released March 1 by Cherry Grove Collections, with accolades on its jacket by some of the nation’s top poets.

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center presents an enlightening public lecture on the science of music on Thursday, February 6. Entitled “Music, Memory and the Brain,” it features Dr. Petr Janata of the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain and his research on neurological links between music and memories.

The Sugar Pine Foundation's goal is to save the Sugar Pine and White Pine trees from blister rust in Lake Tahoe by educating and and involving the community in hands-on forest stewardship.

The group has several opportunities this fall to help save the trees by planting seedling in areas around the lake. 850 seedlings have already been planted this fall and more will be planted at the following events:

On Oct. 11 at 7 pm Bona Fide Books will launch poet Robert Krut’s award-winning collection “This Is the Ocean” with a reading and book signing as part of the Lake Tahoe Community College’s Writers’ Series. The event is free and open to the public.

Lake Tahoe, climate change and how global warming affects the lake will be the subject of a discussion by renowned limnologist Dr. Charles Goldman Friday, 6 p.m. June 7 at the Sierra Nevada College campus in Incline Village.

UC Davis research at Lake Tahoe began with Dr. Goldman. In 1959, he formed the Tahoe Research Group and began regularly monitoring Lake Tahoe. Goldman successfully combined effective research and social action with his pioneering studies of lake eutrophication (the dense growth of algae and other organisms).

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center, the Tahoe Expedition Academy, other community partners, and with sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline, will host the eighth annual Science Expo on March 18 - 21, 2013 for students from the region.

The Science Expo is open to the general public on the evening of Wednesday, March 20 from 4 – 6 p.m. for children of all ages together with their families at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village. Ice cream will be provided by Susie Scoops of Incline Village. Admission is free.

Nutrition science researcher Dr. Kimber Stanhope will present a study at Lake Tahoe on July 26 that was recently featured in the CBS News 60 Minutes investigative report with Dr. Sanjay Gupta on the metabolic effects of sugar consumption.
The 6 p.m. presentation will be at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center in Incline Village on the campus of Sierra Nevada College, as part of its monthly lecture series.

As you may know, sugar pines and other white pines are plagued by a non-native invasive pathogen. White pine blister rust kills about 90 percent of sugar pines it infects. Scientists and restoration managers have agreed that the only effective restoration strategy is to identify seed trees resistant to the rust and plant their progeny. That is exactly what the Sugar Pine Foundation does and you can help too. Last fall, a volunteer described planting sugar pines as “creating life in our neck of the woods.”

The study of climate change through Earth history has produced a wealth of information on the operation of the ocean-atmosphere system during climate transitions as well as the feedbacks that impact the magnitude and rate of climate change on the planet. A public lecture on Thursday at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences will address some of what has been found.
