Prescribed fire operations may continue around Lake Tahoe this week if weather permits. There are just two areas planned for burning: Off Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly and near Logan Creek Drive on the East Shore.

Smoke from the fires is normal and may continue for several days after materials have been ignited.

The Heavenly Valley fire area has 70.25 acres of hand piles to burn. There are 23 acres of hand piles and machine piles left to burn.

Weather conditions in the Lake Tahoe basin have been conducive to prescribed burns since fall, and as conditions permit, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit plans on continuing prescribed fire operations starting Monday, April 20, 2015.

Expect smoke from planned operations at Blackwood Canyon between Tahoe City and Tahoma, at Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly and on the East Shore near Logan Creek Drive. Burns may last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

The scene: The 1950s were a huge decade of change for South Lake Tahoe, with the proliferation of casinos on the Nevada side and the creation of the one-chair Heavenly ski resort on the California side. But the main attraction, then as now, was the lake itself, its shore dotted with mom-and-pop motels, vacation cottages and souvenir shops. When the original Red Hut opened here in 1959, South Lake Tahoe was becoming popular but the tourism infrastructure was nascent.

Starting Monday, March 30, 2015, weather permitting, the burning of hand piles of wood and slash will take place in Blackwood Canyon between Tahoe City and Tahoma, on the south side of Meeks Bay, on Gardner Mountain near South Tahoe High School and off Gardner Street, on Luther Pass near Grass Lake, at Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly and on the East Shore near Logan Creek Drive.

Operations may last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service are expected to conduct prescribed fire operations around the Tahoe Basin next week, beginning Monday, March 16, 2015, weather permitting.

Operations are scheduled southwest of Meeks Bay, on Gardner Mountain near South Tahoe High School and off Gardner Street, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Edgewood Canyon on lower Kingsbury Grade and near Logan Creek Drive on the East Shore. Operations may last through the next several weeks, as long as conditions allow.

Several different areas around the Lake Tahoe basin have been tapped for continued fire operations.

Over 700 acres will be burned north of Tahoma near Elizabeth Drive, southwest of Meeks Bay, on Gardner Mountain near South Tahoe High School and Gardner Street, Christmas Valley, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, and Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly. On the East Shore, operations may take place near Logan Creek Drive and off Highway 28 north of Spooner Summit.

Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations on Monday, January 26, 2015. Operations may take place near Tahoe City on Highway 28 between Rocky Ridge and Lake Forest, near Emerald Bay at Eagle Point Campground, the Boat Camp and behind Vikingsholm, Gardner Mountain near South Tahoe High School, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, and on the East Shore near Logan Creek Drive and the north side of Spooner Summit. Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations beginning Monday, January 12, 2015.

A major road construction project through South Lake Tahoe is drawing to a close as turf, trees and plants are installed along Highway 50 between Trout Creek and Ski Run Boulevard. The $43.1 million project to collect and treat storm water runoff and provide substantial safety and beautification features started in 2011. The project also included ADA compliant sidewalks with lighting and landscaping and Class II bike lanes to give bikers a safer ride

Drivers can now drive by and see the 183 newly planted trees, 4,966 new shrubs and ground cover plants and 10.897 square yards of turf.

Ski Run Boulevard Farmers’ Market is held every Friday afternoon through Sept. 6 between Larch and Birch on beautiful Ski Run Boulevard.

A $7.3 million road improvement project has begun on a half-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe, Caltrans announced.

The project spans from Ski Run Boulevard to Wildwood Avenue and will allow for the collection and treatment of stormwater runoff, in addition to adding Class II bike lanes, ADA-compliant sidewalks and pedestrian lighting. Other features include a new intersection signal, landscaping and streetscaping. Shoulders will be widened to six feet.

Road construction that has backed up traffic and hurt businesses along Lake Tahoe Boulevard this summer is expected to conclude this month. Caltrans spokeswoman Deanna Shoopman said contractor Disney Construction should have paving work completed on the Trout Creek to Ski Run Boulevard project in South Lake Tahoe within two weeks.

The city of South Lake Tahoe, known for world class skiing and outdoor recreation, can now add energy efficiency to its acclaim. Thanks to the federal stimulus funds, energy efficient lights were installed throughout the city.

About 150 lights at the Motor Pool Building and 88 street lights on Ski Run Boulevard were switched from incandescent bulbs to Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). LEDs are more energy efficient and are longer lasting than traditional lights, saving the city money and maintenance costs.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has begun its annual paving project this week, July 30, 2012. Sierra Nevada Construction of Sparks, Nev., has been selected to perform the $2,858,000 contract.

Market on the Run Farmers' Market on Ski Run Boulevard runs Fridays through summer from 3-8 pm. The boulevard is closed between Birch and Larch streets. Live music, a beer garden in front of the Blue Angel cafe, organic local produce, unique food vendors, locally made bread and other local products and goods.
