There are currently some scams currently spreading through the area from phone calls from IRS and Department of Justice impostors.

The Office of Justice Programs’ Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) has received multiple reports that individuals claiming to represent the Department of Justice are calling members of the public as part of an impostor scam. The department strongly encourages the public to remain vigilant and not to provide personal information during these calls, which appear to target the elderly.

Dozens of new California laws go into effect in 2020

National Day of Mourning - Post office and federal offices closed

It is not very often there is a National Day of Mourning. President Trump has called for one on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 and his executive order will close the federal government to honor the late President George H.W. Bush who held the country's highest position from 1989-1993.

There will be a state funeral for the 41st president held at the National Cathedral in Washington starting at 8:00 a.m. PST. After the ceremony, his body will be moved to Texas, where he will be buried at his presidential library.

Bush died on Friday at the age of 94.

Douglas County senior scammed out of $34,000 over 20-month period

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) recently made connections with a senior citizen through their new Caring Neighbors Program. They found the senior had been scammed out of over $34,000 over the past 20 months.

In the program, a deputy and a volunteer visit seniors to obtain needed information such as consent, next of kin and medication information. The information is beneficial in case of a future emergency involving the senior citizen.

IRS scam targeting South Lake Tahoe residents

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has received multiple reports regarding a phone scam to local residents. Callers are identifying themselves to potential victims as an employee of the IRS (Internal Revenue Service). These phony IRS Agents inform the victim they have a warrant for their arrest or owe taxes. This is a scam. Callers claiming to be from the IRS tell intended victims they must pay using a pre-paid debit card, credit cards or wire transfer. The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver’s license.

Scam targeting users of CalWORKS and CalFresh

The is a current scam in California that targets people enrolled in public assistance programs in the state. Though there are no known victims in El Dorado County, the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) would like to let all users of electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards to be on the lookout for potential scammers using text messaging.

South Lake Tahoe man facing multiple charges after Douglas County arrest

South Lake Tahoe resident Ray Brashears, age 33, is facing a plethora of charges after being arrested by deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) Tuesday night.

The deputies pulled over Brashears September 19 at 9:00 p.m. and discovered he had an active misdemeanor warrant out of Tahoe Township for theft. He was also on probation through Nevada Parole and Probation.

Couple convicted of 2015 mail and identity thefts in El Dorado County

San Joaquin County residents Aman Izatt, 30, and Jarrod Izatt, 35, were sentenced to over 24 years in prison on January 27 for their part in a 2015 identity theft case in El Dorado County.

New telephone scam targeting South Lake Tahoe residents

South Lake Tahoe residents in South Lake Tahoe have been receiving calls from people pretending to be from Microsoft, and the SLT Police Department wants to alert the public on the scam.

A local senior couple was recently contacted, and the scammers told them they had overpaid Microsoft in the past and Microsoft wanted to refund them the money. The scammer had the victims turn on their computer and give them remote access.

El Dorado Hills tax preparers headed to jail for $1.8 million in fake claims

An unlicensed El Dorado county tax preparer was sentenced Friday to 3 1/2 years in prison and ordered to pay $1,895,833 in restitution for conspiring to file false claims and filing false claims. Her co-conspirator will be sentenced next week.

Barbara Antonucci, 49, and her co-conspirator, Sherry Taggart, 56, of El Dorado Hills, prepared tax returns for clients seeking to maximize their refunds from the Internal Revenue Service.

El Dorado County BOS appoint interim head of the Community Development Agency

A former member of both the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors and California State Assembly has been named the interim director of the El Dorado County Community Development Agency.

At the BOS meeting Tuesday, Roger Niello was appointed to fill the spot vacated when Steve Pedretti left the position for Placer County.

Niello begins his job November 2.

Before he went into public service, Niello managed the Niello Auto Group for
25 years until 1999.

Jury scam alert issued by El Dorado County

If you are a past or prospective juror in El Dorado County, you may be the subject of a scam, and county officials are reaching out to the public to warn them.

Jurors will never be contacted by phone regarding failure to serve jury duty. All communication regarding failure to serve jury duty is done via U.S. mail or personal service.

No court jury staff or El Dorado County Sheriff’s staff ask past or prospective jurors to pay a fine or provide financial details including; credit card numbers, bank account(s), social security numbers or other personal information.

Two arrested in nationwide casino credit scam

A federal grand jury returned a nine-count indictment Thursday against Vivian Wang, 53, of Lilburn, Georgia, and Frank Luo, 48, of Las Vegas, Nevada, charging them both with wire fraud and charging Wang with aggravated identity theft. The defendants were arrested today at their residences in Georgia and Nevada.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of a series of scams that have been targeted at residents. Even though the recent reports have been in Douglas County, all people should be aware as the criminals know no county, or state lines.

Counterfeit bills on rise in El Dorado County; One arrest made

Several counterfeit bills have been used for transactions on the west slope of El Dorado County, even days after the arrest of one suspect. On May 8, the Sheriff Deputies were called to the Round Table Restaurant in Pollock Pines after a man tried to buy food with a counterfeit $100 bill. He and a woman left before deputies arrived but a description of the pair and their vehicle was provided to EDCSO.

South Lake Tahoe resident victim of international phone scam

An elderly South Lake Tahoe resident is the victim of a phone scam where he sent a undisclosed amount of money to unknown people. The phone number initiating the scam was from the area code 876, which is Jamaica.

The resident called SLT Police Department to alert them that he received phone calls from people he didn't know who were trying to obtain money from him. The victim was told by the caller that he was stuck in customs and needed help getting out. The suspect convinced the elderly victim to send him a large amount of money.

According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, the caller tells the resident that they have a past due bill, and threaten to shut off their power if they don't pay the bill over the phone immediately.

Placerville couple indicted, face federal charges of filing false tax return and liens

A Placerville couple was arrested Tuesday and face criminal charges after federal investigators said they defrauded the government by filing false tax returns and false liens against IRS employees.

Charles and Victoria Tingler face conspiracy and other charges. According to an indictment, the Tinglers and Teresa Marie Marty, are charged with filing liens against the property of three IRS employees and filing liens of at least $84 million against the property of two U.S. Justice Department attorneys, according to a news release.
