South Lake Tahoe man dies in vehicle accident at Ski Run and Pioneer Trail

A South Lake Tahoe man died and two were hospitalized in an early Saturday morning accident near Pioneer Trail and Ski Run Boulevard.
William Olazaba of South Lake Tahoe, a passenger in a white Honda Accord driven by Roberto Olazaba, 22, died at Barton Memorial Hospital. According to South Lake Tahoe police, the Honda broadsided a GMC Yukon driven by Noe Corea, 26, of South Lake Tahoe.
The accident was reported at around 1:35 a.m. and alcohol is suspected as being a contributing factor, according to South Lake Tahoe police. The vehicles struck a power utility box and knocked out power to the Ski Run area, police said.

Supervisors Offer Support for Naming Lake Tahoe Peak for Fallen Warriors

The Placer County Supervisors this week gave their support to efforts to name an unnamed peak in Eastern Placer County in honor of three Tahoe-area servicemen who were killed in action in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The peak, located in the Lake Tahoe Basin on United States Forest Service land in Placer County, will be called Gold Star Peak.

The three fallen men include two soldiers and one Marine:

PFC Phillip Brandon Williams, USMC, 21, died October 9, 2006 in Iraq;
Sergeant Timothy M. Smith, USA, 25, died April 7, 2008 in Iraq; and

South Lake Tahoe police to crack down on drivers texting, using cell phones

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has teamed up with The California Office of Traffic Safety, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the California Highway Patrol, and 36 other law enforcement agencies across the greater Sacramento region to eliminate motorists’ hand-held cell phone use and texting. The effort is a special federally funded pilot program using the region to test tactics that may be employed nationally in the future.

New Officers Join the South Lake Tahoe Police Department

Two new officers will join the South Lake Tahoe Police Department force. They will be sworn by Chief Brian Uhler in in a brief ceremony 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26. Two men approached an 89-year-old in the Safeway store parking lot on Johnson Boulevard and offered to fix a dent in the senior citizen's car for $80 in cash plus an additional $20 for more work later.

On Wednesday the South Lake Tahoe Police Department received word from the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department that Derek Penaranda, 30, from Ripon, Calif., passed away while in a long term care facility in their jurisdiction.

Police clarify fraud alert regarding contractor work

This information release is being sent as an update to a fraud alert press release sent out on September 19. Since that release the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has been contacted by South West Gas who advised they do indeed have three private contractors working in South Lake Tahoe. There are two contractors and one Inspection Company that work with customers on various weatherization programs.

A new name and new partnership fashioned after health, recreation and fun; South Lake Tahoe’s inaugural Lake Tahoe Lifestyle Festival drew nearly 2,000 attendees on Saturday, September 8 to Bijou Community Park. This new festival was crafted by Barton Health and the City of South Lake Tahoe to bring children, families and individuals together for health education and non-stop excitement.

Police warn of gas company scam

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department received information of a scam to access retiree’s financial information. A person falsely presents themself as a representative from the local gas company and offers to set up an appointment to review the customer’s financial records. The representative claims they can lower the gas bill, if they can review the financial documents.
The public should know Southwest Gas will not ever send anyone out to review personal financial information of customers.

Woman critically hurt in South Lake Tahoe crosswalk accident

South Lake Tahoe Police have provided more details into Saturday's pedestrian accident on Highway 50 near Heavenly Village that critically injured a 71-year-old Ohio woman on Saturday night.

South Lake Tahoe police arrest juveniles in burglary and vandalism spree

On Sept. 7, the South Lake Tahoe Police responded to a radio call of a burglary which had occurred at an art supply store in the City of South Lake Tahoe. During the investigation officers were advised that cash and approximately $3000 worth of spray paint and markers had been stolen.
On Sept. 8, victims of vandalism began calling the Police Department to report that buildings, signs and vehicles had been tagged with graffiti.

South Lake Tahoe police arrest man on felony charges; stolen Lexus, wristwatch recovered

A 25-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested and faces felony burglary and drug charges after a chase Monday that went from South Lake Tahoe across the state line.
Deonte Brown is suspected of stealing, among other things, a 2002 Lexus convertible from a Zephyr Cove home, South Lake Tahoe authorities said. He was booked into Douglas County Jail.

Man dies after being hit by vehicle on Lake Tahoe Boulevard near Pioneer Trail

UPDATE 3PM: South Lake Tahoe authorities say a 49-year-old man dressed in dark clothes was struck and killed by a van after attempting to cross Lake Tahoe Boulevard outside of the crosswalk.
More details have been released by South Lake Tahoe Police Department regarding Tuesday night's fatal accident that shut down Lake Tahoe Boulevard / Highway 50 from Pioneer Trail to Midway for about three hours. The driver of the van that hit the pedestrian has been cleared of any wrong-doing, according to Sgt. Brad Williams. The investigation is continuing and the identity of the pedestrian is being withheld pending notification of family members.

South Lake Tahoe authorities find weapons, truck associated with Friday night shooting

On Friday, August 10, at 11:07pm, South Lake Tahoe Police responded to the area of the 3100 block of Nevada Avenue on a report of gunshots being fired. Police arrived in the area and located a vehicle and an occupied residence both of which had damage consistent with gunfire. Witnesses stated that a black Dodge Charger and possibly a black SUV or truck were scene in the area.

South Lake Tahoe man faces burglary charge in connection with Patient to Patient marijuana collective break-in

South Lake Tahoe authorities have arrested a local man in an alleged burglary attempt at the Patient to Patient marijuana collective.
Leslie Decker, 24, of South Lake Tahoe faces a charge of burglary after he was found on Wednesday night crawling out from a glass door that had apparently been broken with a cement cinder block, said Lt. Brian Williams of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. Also found in Decker's possession were several tools.
On July 9 South Lake Tahoe police arrested two others in a separate burglary.

South Lake Tahoe police arrest man, two others sought in gang-related shooting

A South Lake Tahoe man faces an attempted murder charge and two others are being sought in what authorities said was a gang-related shooting in June that involved a pedestrian and a vehicle.
On Friday, authorities obtained a warrant and arrested Cesar Caro, 19, at his South Lake Tahoe home. He faces charges of attempted murder in the June 27 incident. His bail was set at $150,000.

Tobacco Sales to Minors Drop in El Dorado County

A recent survey conducted in El Dorado County showed that fewer merchants are willing to sell tobacco products to minors compared to just two years ago. Of the 100 tobacco retailers surveyed countywide, only 11 stores sold tobacco products to youth, resulting in a sales rate of 11 percent. In March of 2010, a similar survey resulted in a sales rate of 14.5 percent.

Suspected marijuana collective burglars arrested

South Lake Tahoe Police responded to a reported burglary of Patient To Patient, a marijuana collective on July 9 in the 2300 block of Lake Tahoe Blvd. The investigation revealed that two suspects broke into the collective during the night time hours of July 8, 2012.

Suspect in South Lake Tahoe stabbing remains at large; victim suffers arm wound

UPDATE 6:11PM: One person was stabbed and a suspect is at large and being sought by South Lake Tahoe police Friday evening.
The stabbing happened at about 3:46 Friday afternoon in the area of 11th and Eloise. The suspect is described as late teens, a white male, without a shirt, wearing plaid white and blue shorts, a Boston Celtics ball cap being worn backwards, with a backpack and carrying a knife. The stabbing may have stemmed from an incident where the victim, a 22-year-old man, was riding a bicycle and the suspect was on a skateboard. The victim was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital with a stab wound to his arm, said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. David Stevenson.

South Lake Tahoe authorities investigate Wednesday shooting on Bonanza Avenue

South Lake Tahoe police are investigating shots that were reportedly fired from vehicles in the 1100 block of Bonanza Avenue on Wednesday night. Evidence suggests that several gun shots were fired and leads are being investigated in this case, according to Lt. David Stevenson of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

A man was reportedly shot at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night in South Lake Tahoe, according to local police department dispatch via scanner.
The man was reportedly hit by "bird shot" in the back of the head and was said to be conscious. It was unclear if bullets penetrated the man's head or if he was hit by shrapnel. The incident happened in the 2600 block of Sussex Avenue. The suspects were said to have fled in a silver-colored SUV. They were identified as 2 to 3 white males, according to officers at the scene.

A 49-year-old Sacramento kept authorities at bay overnight in an armed standoff at a South Lake Tahoe motel. The following information comes from South Lake Tahoe Police regarding the standoff at the Pine Cone Acre Motel in South Lake Tahoe. No shots were fired.

Child bicyclist wearing headphones, no helmet injured after being hit by large truck

A 12-year-old boy wearing headphones and riding a bicycle without a helmet was hurt in a collision on Thursday, South Lake Tahoe police report. The accident happened at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Highway 50 when the boy attempted to cross against a red traffic signal.

Missing Woman Michaela Vandenberg located

UPDATE 11:51AM: Michaela Vandenberg, who had been reported missing on the morning of May 15, was found unharmed on the evening of May 15. South Lake Tahoe Police Department utilized available resources to locate the woman, according to the city's website.

Avoid DUI Task Force Deploys Extra Patrols For Cinco de Mayo

The Avoid the 6 — El Dorado County DUI Task Force will be deploying DUI saturation patrols throughout into a number of cities supporting routine DUI patrols on Cinco De Mayo starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2012.  Additionally, CHP will be deploying saturation patrols onto freeways and in unincorporated county jurisdictions to stop, test and arrest impaired drivers who fail to use a designated driver.

Authorities have arrested a Carmichael, Calif., man suspected in the 1980 South Lake Tahoe gas station robbery and murder of 16-year-old Richard Swanson.
After nearly 32 years, On March 28, Andrew Sanford, 50, was arrested and booked in the Sacramento County Jail for the alleged murder of Swanson. The robbery and homicide happened on Aug. 14, 1980 in South Lake Tahoe at what was then the Shell Gas Station located at the “Y” on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road. Details of the case have been kept tightly under wraps.

Arrest made in 31-year South Lake Tahoe Richard Swanson murder case; Carmichael, Calif. man faces charges

A Carmichael, Calif., man has been arrested in the 31-year-old murder case of Richard Swanson, South Lake Tahoe police report.
On March 28, 2012 Andrew Sanford, 50, of Carmichael, was arrested and booked in the Sacramento County Jail for the murder of Richard Swanson. The robbery/homicide occurred on Aug. 14, 1980 in South Lake Tahoe at what was then the Shell Gas Station located at the “Y” on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road, according to a press statement.

Authorities ask for help in locating family of twin elderly South Lake Tahoe sisters found dead

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help in locating family members of elderly twins, Patricia and Joan Miller, 73, who were found dead in their South Lake Tahoe home on February 26. The nature of their deaths hasn't been determined, however, foul play has been ruled out, said Sheriff's Lt. Bryan Golmitz. The cause and manner of death is still being investigated by El Dorado County Sheriff’s detectives and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

The Basic Speed Law Still Exists on US Highway 50

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department desires to share some important information with our public about the raising of speed limit on US Highway 50 through the city limits. Based upon the latest Caltrans traffic and engineering study, the speed limit will increase by 5 mph from what is currently posted. However, until the new speed limit signs are posted along US Highway 50, the existing speed limit signs are currently not enforceable, per se. While we are in this transition, we strongly encourage our residents and visitors to continue following the currently posted speed limit signs.

In-town public sled hills disappear

Though it is off the radar, sledding will always have its place as an all-ages family activity. And though there are plenty of places to sled and tube around the city limits of South Lake Tahoe, the last of the remaining free places in town have dried up.
And not for a lack of snow, either. Two sled and tube hill favorites have been removed from the public after recent projects leveled some of the property to make way for expansions.
