South Tahoe Middle School Connectivity Plan Workshop

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) was awarded over $150,000 to look into providing safer, more walkable and bikeable off highway routes around South Tahoe Middle School (STMS), Bijou Park and Lake Tahoe Community College. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) awarded the grant as part of their $500,000 "On Our Way" program grants.

Another public workshop to get feedback from the community will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the STMS Multi-purpose room.

South Lake Tahoe students to perform a Veterans Day Musical Tribute

Music students from throughout the Lake Tahoe Unitied School District will be treating local veterans and community members to an evening of entertainment with their bands, choirs and orchestras.

South Tahoe Middle School, South Tahoe High School and Tahoe Valley Elementary
Bands, Orchestras, and Choirs celebrate and honor veterans of the armed services at the concert which will be at the STMS multi-purpose room on Wednesday, November 12 for the concert.

The theme for the night is "A Veterans Day Musical Tribute."

The concert is free!

Locals help find safer way to walk and bike to South Tahoe Middle School

There were two workshops held on Thursday at South Tahoe Middle School to help identify the safe and unsafe routes students take to school each day on foot or on their bikes. From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., school officials, staff from Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), the Lake Tahoe Sustainability Mobility group and members of the public were stationed at locations on the streets around the school to monitor traffic, car speeds and safe routes the students were taking to get to school.

South Lake Tahoe Woman Faces Slew of Charges after Hit and Run

A 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman remains jailed Tuesday evening on charges of hit and run, resisting, DUI and assault with a deadly weapon. Alejandra Lopez was driving westbound on Highway 50 in the vicinity of South Tahoe Middle School at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday morning when the series of events occurred that landed her in a cell at El Dorado County Jail. Lopez is accused of splitting the two westbound lanes with her car, hitting the cars in each lane. The drivers of the two cars which were hit got of their vehicles after the accident when Lopez tried to run one of them over.

South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade and Game Friday

South Tahoe High has been celebrating Homecoming Week since last Saturday's dance. Each day this week has seen students dressing up according to the day's theme. Monday was Farmers and Agriculture, Tuesday was Beach Bum Day, Wednesday was Hollywood, Thursday was Tacky Tourist and Blue And Gold Day on Friday wraps up the week.

FBI to inform parents on what they need to know about social media and their children

Two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will be in South Lake Tahoe next week to provide parents with information they need to know about social media and their children.

FBI Special Agents Scott Scoffed, Sacramento Cyber Crime Squad and FBI Special Agent Glenn Norling, South Lake Tahoe Resident Agent, will present a one hour presentation that will cover socializing on line, how to correctly use mobile devices, making a computer safe and protecting kid's privacy and how to talk to kids about their use of social media.

Enrollment up for South Lake Tahoe schools

The first week of school in South Lake Tahoe is in the books, and the early numbers show that enrollment is up for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's seven schools.

Many students had to miss the first day of school since they didn't have their paperwork and immunizations completed, which are both required to attend local schools.

Angie Keil, the Public Information Officer for LTUSD, said that it was a hectic first week of school but so far the enrollment numbers show that there are 3,877 students in school. This is up by 156 from the end of school figures from June.

Truck causes power outage to schools and Bijou area; Resulting fire put out

A truck carrying tresses to a new building adjacent to the Beach Retreat & Lodge in South Lake Tahoe hit a power pole, causing a transformer to blow, a small fire and power outages to schools, businesses and homes.

The driver of the truck was lost according to South Tahoe Police, and cut through the Safeway parking lot to try and get to the building through the hotel across the street. As he came out of Safeway onto Johnson Blvd, the truck hit a pole and power lines.

Lake Tahoe Unified students head back to school

It's once again time to hear the ring of the school bell, to see the yellow buses going through the neighborhoods, and hear the happy voices from the school playgrounds.

The summer vacation ends Monday for students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District as walk, ride or drive to their first day of school.

Classes at South Tahoe High School start at 7:55 a.m. and school is out at 2:40 p.m. South Tahoe Middle School starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 1:55 p.m.

The four elementary schools have different start and end times:
Bijou, grades K-5 runs from 8:35 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe locals create Bakpocket eco-products

A new business in South Lake Tahoe is the creation of South Lake Tahoe locals Bryan Burnam and Jacob Hanneman, who have taken their passion for the outdoors to start Bakpocket Products.

Since August 8, the company has their newest product, the Adventure Hammock, listed on Kickstarter, which is a global funding platform designed to help small startup companies to promote their projects and products.

Kindergarten, middle school and high school registration for South Lake Tahoe schools in August

Registration for kindergarten at South Lake Tahoe schools will be held on August 4th. South Tahoe Middle School registration for new students will be held on August 12 and for new students at South Tahoe High August 11-14.

The first day of school is August 25th.

"South Lake Tahoe Will Be With Us Long After We Are Gone" - Olympian John Carlos

Regarded by many as the best track and field team ever, members of the 1968 Olympic team returned to the site of their high altitude training center and U.S. Olympic Men's Track & Field Trials on Friday as the location was honored with a California State Historical Marker.

A crowd of a few hundred people gathered at Echo Summit for "Return to the Summit" which honored the unique location as well as the unique time and team. There were tumultuous times in 1968 prior to the Olympics with the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr and Bobby Kennedy as well as the Vietnam War.

Free Physicals for all South Tahoe High Athletes on Monday

There will be free physicals at the South Tahoe High Blue Gym for all perspective athletes and cheer/dance team squads. Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine will be conducting the physicals, which are required for all participants.

All that is required is completed paperwork at the time of the physical. Forms can be found at South Tahoe High, South Tahoe Middle School and the LTUSD offices.

South Tahoe Now sent a questionnaire out to all of the candidates for El Dorado County Supervisor and Douglas County Sheriff. This is the last of the submitted responses. Candidates Sue Novasel, Kenny Curtzwiler and Angela Swanson were the only County Supervisor candidates to respond, and Douglas County Sheriff candidates Ron Pierini and Dave Brady were the only Sheriff candidates to respond. City of South Lake Tahoe Has No Choice But to Repeal Sex Offender Ordinance

Due to a ruling by the California Court of Appeals, the City of South Lake Tahoe can no longer enforce their sex offender ordinance which made it a misdemeanor for sex offenders to be within 300 feet of a school, park or recreation areas. During Tuesday's meeting, the City Council had to repeal the ordinance. To be official, the City Council will have a second reading and vote on the item in June.

"This is mind boggling," said City Councilwoman JoAnn Connor. "I am disgusted that the court has decided to ignore children in deference to sexual predators."

Over $550,000 Awarded by TRPA to Lake Tahoe Organizations

"On Our Way" grants totaling over $550,000 were awarded this week by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). Six projects that aim at sustainability and improved mobility options around Lake Tahoe will now be able to move forward due to the grants.

South Lake Tahoe Community Comes Through For Ryan Wallace; Receives New Leg Next Week

Just one month ago the plea was made to the South Lake Tahoe community: Help Ryan Wallace raise $25,000 to replace his prosthetic leg.

As of today, the goal was met with the final boost made by the students at South Tahoe Middle School where Wallace was Wrestling Coach and Instructional Aide. "A Minute to Win It For Ryan" was presented to the kids as a way to help their mentor.

61.8% of South Lake Tahoe Students Receive Free or Reduced Cost Lunches

In a community where the economy and weather affect jobs and business levels, perhaps no better indicator is the number of South Lake Tahoe school students who are dependent on the free or reduced cost school lunch program.

Currently, 61.8% of all students are on these programs in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, ranging from a high of 81.3% of the students at Tahoe Valley Elementary to a low of 19.3% at the Environmental Science Magnet School.

Six New Bus Shelters Now Line Highway 50 Through South Lake Tahoe

You may have noticed the new bus shelters placed this summer along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe. They were installed by the Tahoe Transportation District, operator of the local South Shore Transit System. The shelters won't only come with seating and protect those waiting for buses from the elements, they also have new bike racks and bear safe trash cans.

South Tahoe Middle School Students Treated to Shopping Spree

It took several cashiers and 3 check out lines to process the carts full of clothing, coats and shoes that 120 South Tahoe Middle School students spent the day shopping for at Kmart. On Saturday, October 5. The Assistance League® of Sierra Foothills (ALSF) partnered with the South Lake Tahoe Kmart to bring the Operation School Bell® program to the students.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Enrollment Up

For the first time since 1996, enrollment in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District appears to be on an upward trend. There are 102 new students in the district so far this school year, bringing the total number of students currently enrolled to 3,832.

This figure is still far below the number of students attending local school in the 1996-1997 school year when there were 5,978 in grades K to 12.

Tahoe Arts Project Annual Holiday Festival

Food, crafts, music and fun is on tap for the day's activities.

If you'd like to have a boothreserve a space, the deadline is October 16. All crafters and artists are invited, from beginner to professionals. Booth prices are just $50 for a 10 x 10 booth space with no additional commission fees charged.

2nd Annual Tahoe Arts Project Holiday Festival Needs Vendors

Tahoe Arts Project, TAP, had a successful Holiday Festival last year and is looking to make this year's even bigger. They have expanded the event my making it longer and in a new, larger venue at the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose room. It will be held on Saturday, November 16 from 10 am to 5 pm.

TAP expects twice as much foot traffic, and to ensure this they will not be charging an admission fee for the public as they did last year.

Raccoon skinning leads to arrest of at-large parolee, registered sex offender

South Lake Tahoe police arrested a man on Monday for allegedly skinning a raccoon after a foot chase ended on the South Tahoe Middle School ball field.

Kevin Burroughs, 37, faces several charges including unlawful taking of wildlife. He is also a parolee and a registered sex offender out of California and had a felony warrant for being a parolee-at-large. The raccoon’s remains were recovered and destroyed by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

Marijuana sales at South Lake Tahoe schools leads to arrest of couple

South Lake Tahoe police have arrested couple who faces charges of selling marijuana at South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School.

William Anderson, 30, and his fiancé Makayla Hoehn, 25, were arrested Monday and are accused of furnishing marijuana to South Tahoe High School and South Tahoe Middle School students, said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Brian Williams. Both admitted to the crimes.

Father and two sons injured when SUV crashes into South Lake Tahoe Denny's

A South Lake Tahoe father and two sons were injured Thursday morning after the SUV they were in crashed Denny's restaurant on Al Tahoe Boulevard, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department reports.

Todd Jackson, 28, suffered moderate injuries in the 8:50 a.m. accident after being extricated from the 2002 Dodge Durango by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department. He was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno. Jackson's two sons, 11 and 8-years-old, were taken to Barton Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released for minor injuries.

New home for 6th graders at South Tahoe Middle School

A ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted on August 24, 2012 to commence the Grand Opening of the new 6th Grade wing at STMS. Dr. James Tarwater and the South Tahoe Unified School Board proudly unveiled the long awaited building in need.
Incoming 6th graders for the 2012 school year will be the first to utilize this state of the art facility.

LTCC grant program focuses on creating college ready middle and high school students

Services aimed at getting students ready for college are available for up to 500 South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School this school year through a Lake Tahoe Community College federally funded grant program.

The Department of Education grant that started in the tail end of last school year consists of $230,000 a year for five years to provide services to 500 low-income, first generation college-bound students at the middle and high schools.
