Hot ash sparks deck fire at South Lake Tahoe home

Firefighters in South Lake Tahoe knocked down a deck fire Jan 12 that was started by hot ash.
Karl Koeppen, shift commander for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, said minimal damage was done to the structure and interior of the home, located in the Pioneer Village area. The fire burned the deck structure but did not creep into the interior. The residents were allowed to stay in the house after the fire was knocked down.

Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol issued nearly 12,000 traffic citations to motorists observed talking, texting or reading non-voice communication while operating a motor vehicle on Nevada’s highways in 2012. The state of Nevada will introduce a new “brand” in the spring that will include a marketing campaign to help boost tourism and economic development, Gov. Brian Sandoval told an audience at the Governor’s Conference on Tourism on Tuesday in Sparks.

Suspects arrested in Douglas County marijuana operation

Three men were arrested Wednesday for their alleged involvement in a large marijuana grow operation discovered in Douglas County in the Toiyabe National Forest near Jacks Valley.
The men arrested are Rafael Salas-Silva, 28 of Sparks, Martin Urioste-Maciel, 26, of Pasco, Wash., and Alberto Mendes-Arroyo, 23 of Reno.
The men face charges of growing more than 1,000 marijuana plants in the James Canyon area of Douglas County. The Record-Courier newspaper reports that 4,700 plants were seized.

Expedition Man Endurance Festival comes to Northern Nevada

Coming from as far as Australia and as near as North Lake Tahoe, more than 200 men and women athletes are gearing up for a race to remember at Northern Nevada’s inaugural Expedition Man Endurance Festival and Ultra-Distance-Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 25. Athletes will begin with a swim at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe, then onto a more than 100-mile-bike-ride through Carson City and a long-run along the Truckee River, ending at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

Nevada Highway Patrol to set up Incline Village sobriety checkpoint over July 4 holiday

The Nevada Highway Patrol, along with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Sparks Police Department, and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office are planning a sobriety check point for the Fourth of July holiday.
The check point will be held in Incline Village at Lake Tahoe and is being funded by a Joining Forces grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.
Due to the fireworks display and other special events planned at Lake Tahoe, a large increase in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic expected during the holiday.

RGJ: Apple looks at Northern Nevada to invest $1 billion in facilities

The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting that Apple is planning on opening a data center east of Sparks and a business and purchasing center in downtown Reno, part of a $1 billion investment the company plans to spend in Northern Nevada over the next 10 years.
The deal includes tax abatements from the city and state, including sales and property tax. The Reno City Council will consider the deal on Wednesday.

Fire restrictions begin Monday outside the Lake Tahoe basin

Fire restrictions for the Carson and Bridgeport districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will begin on Monday, June 18. The combination of a particularly dry winter and spring, parched vegetation, lingering drought conditions, increasing daytime temperatures, and recent human-caused fires forced the Forest Service to implement the conditions.
