PARK CITY, UT (May 7) – Olympic gold medalists Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO), Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) and Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) are among the 40 athletes nominated to the 2015 U.S. Alpine Ski Team. The team will formally named in the fall during Nature Valley First Tracks at Copper Mountain, CO – home of the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center.

The Whittell High School girls took first place in Giant Slalom and Duals in the Tahoe Basin Ski League Finals held in Squaw Valley this week while the South Tahoe High girls ski team took first in Slalom, second in Giant Slalom and Duals. The South Tahoe Girls took first overall.

Maia Bickert from South Tahoe High took 1st in all three races, Slalom, Giant Slalom and Duals. Whittell's Michael Gardner placed 2nd in Duals, 6th in Giant Slalom and 5th in Slalom while teammate Madison Idso placed 2nd in Giant Slalom, 8th in Slalom,

Top Ten Giant Slalom Girls

Rain and fog greeted the women in Tuesday's Giant Slalom race in Sochi. Julia Mancuso of Lake Tahoe was racing in her final Olympic event for 2014 and did not finish. Mancuso won the bronze last week in the Super Combined, making her the most successful American female Alpine skier in Olympic history with four medals.

18 year old American Mikaela Shiffrin was just .50 seconds behind the gold medalist Tina Maze of Slovenia and ended up in fourth in the Giant Slalom.

North Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso led Team USA once again Saturday, posting the best American finish in eighth at a rough and unforgiving super G, the final women’s speed event of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games. Another difficult course set plus temperatures in the 40s yielded DNFs in seven of the first eight racers, but Austrian Anna Fenninger dialed it in for gold on the inconsistent course.

Super combined bronze medalist Julia Mancuso of Lake Tahoe led the U.S. Ski Team with eighth in Thursday's Olympic downhill as Dominique Gisin of Switzerland and Tina Maze of Slovenia made history with a tie for gold. An Olympic medal tie has happened four times since 1948 in alpine skiing, but before today, had never happened for a gold medal.

Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso produced a true champion performance Monday, becoming the first American skier in history to win a medal in three straight Olympic Winter Games with her bronze in a tricky super combined event at the Rosa Khutor alpine center.

Mancuso skied into the lead in the downhill portion and then ripped up the slalom course that bumped nine skiers off course, finishing third behind gold winner German Maria Hoefl-Riesch and silver winner Austrian Nicole Hosp.

Lake Tahoe's Travis Ganong made his Olympic debut with the best finish of his career in today's Olympic Downhill race in Sochi. The Squaw Valley skier led the race at one point but was bumped by Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud, who finished third behind race winner Matthias Mayer of Austria and Christof Innerhofer of Italy.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Sunday nominated 20 athletes to the U.S. Olympic Alpine Ski Team that will compete in Sochi next month. The team is highlighted by Olympic gold medalists Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) and World Champion Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO).

CORTINA d'AMPEZZO, Italy – Julia Mancuso from Squaw Valley, CA continued to gain momentum toward Sochi with seventh Thursday in an Audi FIS Alpine World Cup super G in Cortina for her best race of the season. Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) added to the U.S. momentum with ninth, her best super G finish since 2007. Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl won the race, which was a replacement for the canceled super G race last weekend due to a powerful winter storm that sidelined the weekend’s speed events.

During the winter of 1960, athletes from around the world came to Lake Tahoe to participate in the Winter Olympic Games. The biathlon and cross country events were held in what is now Sugar Pine Point State Park. A celebration of the area's snow heritage begins Saturday with a series of events to showcase makes the region so special.

Award-winning author David C. Antonucci will present an illustrated talk at the South Lake Tahoe library on January 7, 2014 at 6 pm. He will speak about the 1960 Winter Olympics held at Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe. Antonucci will feature his most recent book, "Images of Sports: The 1960 Winter Olympics" which will be available for sale and autographing.

With ski resorts busy preparing for the winter season ahead, now is the time to start planning your time on the slopes! "Plates for Powder" is the successful promotion run by the Tahoe Fund to increase sales of the Lake Tahoe license plates.

Individuals who purchase the specialty Lake Tahoe license plate in either Nevada or California prior to April 1, 2014 will receive two lift tickets to their choice of 11 Lake Tahoe resorts.

Geotours of the Lake Tahoe basin will highlight environmentally friendly activities during the Tahoe Geotourism Expo held September 7 - 8, 2013. Christina Proctor, public relations professional, and Bev Ducey, a resource development expert with an extensive history in grant procurement, will be advancing the mission of the Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) in 2013. The TPC Executive Committee contracted with Proctor and Ducey after Mone´ Haen, former chief executive officer, announced her resignation in December. Proctor will be developing TPC materials, presentations and handling the daily administrative tasks of the organization. Ducey will focus on strengthening the TPC’s financial resources through grant development.

Bank of the West has signed on as the presenting sponsor of the downhill ski and snowboard event created by Daron Rahlves, considered among the most decorated American downhill and Super G skier in U.S. history. The tour spans four weekends from Feb. 2 – March 10 at four of Lake Tahoe resorts.

Getting to North Lake Tahoe’s snowy ski slopes just got a whole lot easier with the launch of the region's first area-wide free ski shuttle serving North Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Donner Summit.

The service runs between area lodging properties to 9 different ski resorts on weekends and holiday weeks now through March 31. It was formed through a collaboration of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association in partnership with the Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association and Placer County, the town of Truckee and several ski resorts.
