June is wildfire awareness month at Lake Tahoe. And nine years later, the 2007 Angora Fire remains a vivid remember that wildfire is one of the greatest threats facing our environment, our homes, and our businesses. We must prepare accordingly.
Our region continues to take important steps to manage that wildfire threat, improve the health of our forests, and create fire adapted communities that are prepared for the next wildfire at Tahoe. But there is more work to do.
Not too late to participate in Tahoe Bike Challenge; Celebration June 18

For two weeks every year, Lake Tahoe area commuters, students and recreational riders get on their bikes instead of in the cars to get to where they need to go. This year's event started on June 1 and goes until June 14 so there are just a few days to make your bike rides count.
In addition to all the other reasons to participate (including that it is fun & free), the data collected goes to help show the need for bicycle paths and other infrastructure when we apply for grants and other funding.
Property owners fighting weeds in the Tahoe Keys

In an effort to prevent the growth and spread of invasive weeds in the Tahoe Keys, residents are being proactive in the fight to keep their lagoons clean. The Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) has submitted an updated Integrated Management Plan to the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board for approval.
TKPOA's plan is an adaptive, holistic one to greatly reduce aquatic invasive weeds in its lagoons.

Letter: Caltrans proposes roundabout at 50/89 intersection in Meyers

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 3 is developing a safety project that proposes to construct a roundabout at the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and State Highway 89 in Meyers beginning in 2018. The department has looked at several options at this location and has identified a roundabout as the preferred alternative to address safety concerns and improve traffic flow.
Leave No Trace events in South Lake Tahoe to raise awareness

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and its Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers team are partnering with the Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee and other Lake Tahoe organizations to host community events and educational activities June 6-13. As visitors flock to the outdoor recreation wonderland that is Lake Tahoe the trails, beaches and forests are experiencing an increase in use and the associated impacts of trash, trail erosion and shoreline degradation.
City receives $3 million in grants for South Lake Tahoe projects

Four new projects in South Lake Tahoe will be moving forward after the City was awarded $3 million in grants from the federal government through TRPA's Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO).
The money will be used for the following:
$1.8 million for design and construction of the Sierra Boulevard Complete Street Project
$510,000 for construction of the Tahoe Valley Greenbelt Project
$390,000 for purchase of a Sander vehicle replacement
$200,000 for the design and engineering of the Lake Tahoe Boulevard Bike Trail
Coe Swobe, father of the Tahoe Bi-State Compact, dies at age of 87

The flag is flying half-staff at the TRPA offices today in honor of the passing of Coe Swobe who has been called the “Father of the Tahoe Bi-State Compact.”
Former Nevada State Sen. Coe Swobe died Thursday of liver failure at the age of 87.
“Lake Tahoe and the state of Nevada lost a stalwart champion in Coe Swobe,” said Joanne S. Marchetta, TRPA’s Executive Director. “Coe directed his passion for the lake into a lasting legacy that serves as an international symbol of cooperation in protecting an irreplaceable natural resource.”
Community bike path cleanup scheduled for June 11

Volunteers can meet at one of four locations throughout South Tahoe to pick up litter from the areas around our bike paths. Then we’ll get together at the League to Save Lake Tahoe office located at 2608 Lake Tahoe Boulevard for a free lunch, raffle and celebration after 12:00 p.m. All ages are welcome and all supplies will be provided.
We encourage volunteers to ride their bike, which also makes you eligible to enter a free raffle for a chance to win a prize.
Community weighs in on Lake Tahoe transportation issues

There is a balancing act needed to provide quality transportation, protect Lake Tahoe, keep clean air and meet the needs of the communities around the lake, but that is what Tahoe Transportation District is trying to accomplish with a series of pubic outreach efforts.
On Tuesday night in South Lake Tahoe, staff from the TTD, Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO) and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) held an open house at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel to get a pulse on the feelings of the public about transportation.
National Day of Civic Hacking to improve government-resident partnerships

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the "Hack Tahoe" Code for America Brigade are partnering to enhance the effectiveness of government through the use of technology.
This new partnership brings community members together through Code for America, a non-profit organization on a mission to make government services simple, effective, and easy to use. Code for America has launched more than 2,300 projects with 100 government partners. Local Code for America chapters are called brigades and are organized by local volunteers.

Another section of what is becoming the premier bikeway circling Lake Tahoe was dedicated in a ceremony behind Lakeside Inn on Wednesday. This new shared-use trail connects to Rabe Meadow with access to Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort.
"The TTD (Tahoe Transportation District) is pleased to have been part of this project," said Carl Hasty, District Manager of TTD. "Bike trails are thought of as a 'nice to do' project in many areas, but in Lake Tahoe they are important."

A 3.43 acre piece of land once owned by Randy Lane's Falcon Capital LLC may soon have a 22-unit condominium project built on it. The property (made up from two parcels) is underneath the gondola, adjacent to the Van Sickle Bi-State Park near the state line in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Summit held to build successful businesses and employees

Over 100 people attended the Make Tahoe Work For You Leadership Lake Tahoe Summit on May 6 at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. The one-day Summit, featuring inspiring sessions for individuals and business owners, provided Lake Tahoe residents with tools to make Tahoe a viable place to succeed, both personally and professionally. The Summit was organized by the Tahoe Chamber’s Leadership Lake Tahoe 2016 class.
Bay Area couple wins lawsuit against TRPA, can build in Angora Fire area

In June, 2007, the Angora Fire swept through a neighborhood, taking with it 242 homes and 3.100 acres of trees and shrubs, forcing people to either rebuild or sell.

Lake Tahoe’s two regional bi-state agencies for transportation, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), are inviting the public to attend interactive open houses this month to learn more about draft proposals to improve Tahoe’s highway corridors and share their ideas and input.
The open houses are Tuesday, May 17 at the North Tahoe Events Center in Kings Beach, and Tuesday, May 24 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel in South Lake Tahoe. Both are from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
16th annual Lake Tahoe snapshot day to show tributary stream health

Over one hundred community members will gather on May 14 as the League to Save Lake Tahoe organizes the year’s largest single-day, hands-on citizens science effort to capture a snapshot of the water quality health of South Shore streams feeding into Lake Tahoe.
“By participating in the 16th annual Snapshot Day, volunteers are building on years of data gathered in these streams to provide valuable data information we can use to help protect Lake Tahoe,” said Jesse Patterson, deputy director for the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency presented Lake Spirit Awards to four people who possess a strong personal commitment to preserving Lake Tahoe at today’s Governing Board meeting.
The Lake Spirit Awards honor people making real progress at restoring Lake Tahoe. Created in 2011, the awards are a way to recognize those individuals whose passion for Tahoe results in progress and environmental improvements.
El Dorado County approves Safe Routes to School Plan for South Lake Tahoe

During their April 19 meeting, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Lake Tahoe Unified School District’s Safe Routes to School Master Plan. With this approval, the Supervisors support plans to improve pedestrian and bicycle access and safety around Lake Tahoe schools through infrastructure upgrades, education and encouragement programs, and better enforcement of traffic laws.
Lake Tahoe's clarity drops five feet

Warmer water led to a loss in clarity of Lake Tahoe in 2015, according to data released Tuesday by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. The average annual clarity (measurements from both summer and winter) is at 73.1 feet, a 4.8 foot decease from the previous year.
This isn't all bad news though, the clarity is still over nine feet greater than the lowest recorded average of 64.1 feet in 1997.
Researchers lower a 10-inch wide disk called a Secchi into the lake, and researchers measure the depth of its visibility.

New roads, campsites and building relocation at Camp Richardson

Work on the second phase of the new campground and vehicle circulation plan at Camp Richardson Resort will continue beginning Monday, May 2, 2016 and last for approximately three months. Officially named the Camp Richardson Resort Campground and Vehicle Circulation Best Management Practices (BMPs) Retrofit, the result will allow the resort to meet current standards for water quality protection and increase universal accessibility to the area's activities.

When people visit Tahoe for the first time, they marvel at the extraordinary natural landscape and fresh, clean air. At the same time, some are shocked at the dilapidated condition of the built environment: rundown buildings, crumbling infrastructure, and tired-looking development. The paradox is compelling. Despite TRPA’s mandate to harmonize the natural and human-made landscapes so that they blend together, outdated development that preceded environmental standards now serves as blight in our community.

Public meetings on transportation changes in Meyers

El Dorado County is proposing roadway and multi-us path improvements for the Meyers community, and they are inviting the public to participate during three different outreach meetings on Friday, April 22.
The proposed changes are meant to make the transportation options more safe and attractive for those living in the area as well those visiting or passing through. One option already mentioned by Caltrans is the addition of a roundabout at the Highway 50/Highway 89 intersection to slow down traffic coming from Echo Summit.
USFS seeks public comment on Burke Creek restoration project

The U.S. Forest Service seeks input on their draft environmental assessment for the restoration for the Burke Creek Highway 50 Crossing and Realignment Project.
The first two phases of the proposed project would restore the Burke Creek channel and adjacent marsh, reduce the amount of sediment that flows into nearby Lake Tahoe and reduce the potential for flooding on U.S. Highway 50.

The proposal to install a 60-foot-long tunnel extension at Cave Rock this summer is the subject of a public hearing by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency on March 31, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.
The agency's hearings officer will meet with all interested parties, public included, on the Nevada Department of Transportation's project to create a safer tunnel due to the falling rock and deteriorating hillside on the westbound lanes of Highway 50 entering the tunnel.

County selects Courtney Walker for County Stormwater Program Manager

South Lake Tahoe residents may remember Courtney Walker when she worked for the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, but now she has a new job as the newly hired Douglas County Stormwater Program Manager.
She is bringing with her over 10 years of experience with stormwater and watershed management. With much of her experience in the Tahoe and Carson River Watershed area, Courtney is well versed in local stormwater and watershed coordination.

Caltrans looking at roundabout or traffic signal in Meyers

Due to the unsafe intersection of Highway 50 and State Route 89, Caltrans is looking at safety improvements in the area to reduce collisions, and their severity. At this time, the preferred option for Caltrans is adding a roundabout at the intersection to improve conditions after a reported seven accidents at the intersection.
The estimated $3.1 million project is scheduled for construction in 2018-19. It is currently in the environmental phase, with the environmental document scheduled to be finalized in November 2016.

The public once again had the opportunity to participate in the planning of the US50/South Shore Revitalization plan (also known as the Loop Road) during a meeting held at South Tahoe Middle School Wednesday evening. About 100 people took advantage of having the opportunity.

The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act of 2015, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, passed the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on Wednesday.
The legislation, created alongside senators Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., Harry Reid, D-Nevada and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., provides federal, state, and local partners important tools to reduce wildfire threats, improve water clarity, jumpstart innovative infrastructure projects, and combat invasive species.

The New Year is getting off to a phenomenal start with snow falling at Lake Tahoe. It seems long ago since we’ve had snow around the lake, but as California and Nevada continue to grapple with four years of drought and water shortages, the snow couldn’t be falling at a better time.
Remaining residents asked to move; Tahoe Beach Club ready to break ground

The remaining tenants at the Tahoe Shore Mobile Home Park at Stateline, Nev., have been given 90 days to find new housing now that owners of the Tahoe Beach Club will be breaking ground on a 20-acre luxury lakefront condominium project.
This announcement should come as no surprise to the people who own or rent the mobile homes since they were originally told in 2003 that they would have to move so the project could be built.
The Tahoe Beach Club has been 14 years in the making and now it looks like the first shovels will be moving dirt at the new lakeside development by June, 2016.

This intriguing book is a memoir of his time with the U.S. Forest Service at Lake Tahoe and, later, of his experiences as Executive Director of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) during one of the most tumultuous times in that Agency's existence. It has been said that Morgan's ideas resolved many of the long standing issues at Tahoe and led eventually to a spirit of cooperation among the various interest groups that survives to this day.

TRPA fines Martis Camp Club for unauthorized dredging

To resolve a pending violation for unauthorized dredging, the Martis Camp Club has agreed to pay a $5,000 fine and restore the area disturbed at its Martis Camp Beach property, located at 6920 North Lake Blvd., in Placer County. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board approved the settlement agreement yesterday.
Placer County pulls out of A & A Lake Tahoe Inn deal

Placer County has made two attempts to buy lodging properties in South Lake Tahoe to give them needed tourist accommodation units (TAUs) for future redevelopment projects in the North Lake Tahoe town centers of Kings Beach and Tahoe City.
The county had offered the owners of the A & A motel $1.425 million for their property at 3520 Lake Tahoe Blvd. After demolishing the motel, the county would have restored the land beneath, earning a bonus ratio of three-to-one TAUs from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, so the motel's 34 units would have been worth 102 to Placer County.
