Another group of locals successfully completed the South Lake Tahoe Citizen's Academy. The graduates were presented with certificates at Tuesday's city council meeting. The 16 graduates are Anita Boel, Brandi Bannister, Brooke Martone-Ballachey, Gia Richards, Greg Carlson, Jennifer Story, Jonathan Moore, Julie Stewart, Karen Kuentz, Mike Allen, Mike Peron, Peter Gochis, Peter Spellman, Rachel Roberts, Scott Fair, and Scott Weavil. Today the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted to approve the ban on single use plastic grocery bags in the city limits, duplicating their 3-2 vote from the first reading of the ordinance on October 1, 2013.

Council members Hal Cole, Angela Swanson and Brooke Laine all voted in favor of the ban. Tom Davis and JoAnn Conner against.

"Look at Lake Tahoe as the picture and Highway 50 as the frame" were the words of South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis as he spoke at the Trout Creek Bridge to Ski Run Boulevard Project Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Friday.

With the assistance of the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and a determined committee, an unnamed peak on the North Shore of the Lake Tahoe Basin has been renamed “Gold Star Peak” in honor of soldiers from the area that paid the ultimate price in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the War on Terrorism. A ceremony to dedicate Gold Star Peak will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2013, at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe.

Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe has submitted a proposal to the USDA Forest Service and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency for expansions to its on-mountain summer activities, as part of Vail Resorts’ Epic Discovery, a Summer Mountain Adventure.

Cultivating a passion and appreciation for the outdoors is a year-round task, and Heavenly Mountain Resort is stepping up to the challenge by expanding its summer operations to include more interactive, family-friendly learning experiences.

“Lake Tahoe is a year-round destination, and there is a tremendous opportunity to offer more summer activities at the top of the Gondola,” said Pete Sonntag, Heavenly’s general manager. “Our hope is that visitors of all ages and backgrounds are able to create life-long connections to our National Forests through adventure, play and recreation.”

Big 5 Sporting Goods celebrated its Grand Opening ceremony for its new South Lake Tahoe location Thursday.

“The Grand Opening of Big 5 is a great addition to the retailers at the Y and we are thrilled to have them in our community. This adds to the larger retailers coming to our community and we hope to attract more small and mid-size retailers to the area” said City of South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis.

Also in attendance of the Grand Opening ceremony were councilmembers Brooke Laine and JoAnn Conner.

Brooke Laine was appointed to the South Lake Tahoe City Council on Tuesday to fill the seat vacated by former Mayor Claire Fortier.
The appointment was made during a special session of the South Lake Tahoe City Council. Laine will be sworn in Feb. 5 and will serve through December 2014. Nine had applied for the job.

The City Clerk’s Office accepted applications for an appointment to the City Council to fill the unexpired term

The South Lake Tahoe City Council made appointments to various Boards and Commissions for 2013 at Tuesday's meeting. Mayor Tom Davis will serve on the following boards: California Tahoe Conservancy, City Selection Committee, TahoeChamber.org, Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, and South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce.

Mayor Pro Tem Hal Cole will serve on El Dorado County LAFCO, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Abandoned Vehicle Abatement JPA, and South Tahoe Redevelopment Successor Agency boards.

The City South Lake Tahoe is pleased to announce that two councilmembers were sworn in and a new Mayor was voted in during today’s City Council meeting.

Hal Cole retained his City Council seat during the November 6th election and joining him is newly elected councilmember, JoAnn Conner. Both Cole and Conner will hold their seats in City Council through November 2016.

The newly seated Council voted by unanimous decision to elect Councilmembers Tom Davis as Mayor and Hal Cole as Mayor Pro Tem to serve a one year term in 2013.

The Grand Opening Ceremony of the TJ Maxx store in South Lake Tahoe took place this morning at 8am as a crowd anxiously awaited outside.
Mayor Claire Fortier, Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis, Councilmember’s Angela Swanson and Bruce Grego, Councilmember elect JoAnn Conner, and City Manager Nancy Kerry were all in attendance for the ceremony.

“It’s exciting that we have a full range of clothing options now by a nationally renowned retailer and we are very fortunate to have that here in or town,” said Mayor Fortier.

UPDATE MONDAY: Saturday's grand opening of Bonanza Park brought community members of all ages to hear the dedication from Chuck Scharer, President and CEO of Edgewood Companies and South Lake Tahoe Mayor Claire Fortier.
Youth immediately began playing on the park equipment and the basketball court was ready to host its first game while hot dogs and hamburgers were grilled for the crowd of families and dignitaries to enjoy.

Update 6PM: City Council votes 4-1 not hire a firm to do a search for a new city manager. Instead leaders agreed to wait 90 days, until Oct. 1, to decide if interim City Manager Nancy Kerry should get the job. In the meantime, a firm was selected to do a background check on Kerry. Council members repeatedly noted and praised Kerry as being ethical and knows the city and its functions and is therefore trustworthy, is the most qualified for the job and that doing a search for anyone else is too costly and therefore unnecessary. Councilman Tom Davis, who voted no, said for public transparency and ethical reasons, there ought to be a search, even though Kerry is the general favorite among the council.

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the League to Save Lake Tahoe (League) have entered into a Settlement Agreement in which the League agrees to drop its appeal of their lawsuit against the City regarding the General Plan Update (GPU) and the City agrees not to seek payment for legal fees.

The Brotherhood Motorcycle Club wishes to thank local businesses and community members here in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline for their generous donations for our annual fundraiser, HOGG WILD XVI. Because of our community’s generosity, we were able to provide 50 complete Turkey dinners to families in need this Thanksgiving. The giveaway at Sierra Community Church was a huge success thanks to the following individuals, businesses and community members. At the Nov. 1 South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, there was a decision passed to use grant money from the state of California to purchase a new hybrid vehicle for use in the citywide recycling program. 
The new Chevy Silverado hybrid is valued at $39,000, gets 20 miles to the gallon and will reduce emissions compared to the old truck currently in use. However, a lively discussion of whether the purchase would give the wrong impression regarding the city’s fiscal responsibility ensued.

To a crowd of about 200, the South Lake Tahoe City Council met to hear the 2011-12 Budget Proposal from its city manager and finance director on Thursday.  There was an obvious tension between the council and members of the public who attended the meeting, though the general sentiment of the council and city manager is that the deficit issues are not their fault, and that employee sacrifice is what is required to balance the budget.

A special meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council to discuss the 2011-12 budget will be held this Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7pm. Not only is this the first look the public will have at the proposed budget, but this may be the only opportunity for public input before layoffs in crucial departments like streets and recreation. The regular council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m.
