South Lake Tahoe schools closed until Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/12/2017 - 4:29pmSouth Lake Tahoe students are able to enjoy the never ending snow day with school being canceled for the fifth straight day on Friday, January 13. Due to the extreme snow removal conditions still going on throughout South Lake Tahoe, on all bus routes and school sites from the week long blizzard, Lake Tahoe Unified School District officials decided to call a snow day.
Snow removal has been ongoing and very difficult due to the amount of and consistency of the snow, the notice of cancellation said.
NDOT begins long list of repairs in Nevada after storm damage

Lake Tahoe Unified closes schools again Thursday to allow for storm cleanup

"Snow removal conditions are ongoing and very difficult due to the amount of and consistency of the snow," said Christy Blach, Transportation Supervisor for the district. "Roads are too narrow for school buses to navigate safety. Roads are too hazardous for students to get to bus stops safely."
Only essential staff should report to work, District Office, snow removal and maintenance.

Nevada starts to clean up after floods; Roads remain closed including Kingsbury Grade
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/09/2017 - 7:56pmMany roads in Nevada were under water Sunday after torrential rains went through, causing rivers and streams to flood. In Reno alone 50 roads were closed due to high water levels, and all bridges over the Truckee River in Reno were also closed.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) spent the day evaluating the state's roads affected by floods and rain. Multiple state roads in the greater Truckee Meadows and Carson Valley areas remain closed, including those in the Sparks industrial area and areas of Reno, including East McCarran Boulevard and South Virginia Street.
Kingsbury Grade closed again due to sinkhole issues
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/08/2017 - 10:57pmCrews from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) are headed to SR207/Kingsbury Grade to investigate a sinkhole which has resulted in another closure of the main connection between Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley.
A sinkhole formed Sunday night in the same general area of the previous erosion which kept the road closed for 4 days. Crews will determine if is the the exact drainage pipe impacted before, or if it is a new one according to Meg Ragonese of NDOT.
The road is closed from Tramway to Foothill Blvd, leaving the lake side from Highway 50 to Tramway open.
High water forcing evacuation of some Douglas County homes
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/08/2017 - 9:45pmRising water concerns and flood in Douglas County has prompted officers to evacuate 15 homes Kingslane Mobile Home Park and 49 homes form the older section of the Aspen Mobile Home Park on 1380 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville, Nev.
Evacuees may go to the Douglas County Community Center located at 1329 Waterloo Ln. Small pets in crates are accepted.
Transportation is available for those in need, contact the Flood hotline at 782-9099 or 783-6404.

NDOT reopens Kingsbury Grade
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/06/2017 - 9:18pmNevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced that State Route 207/Kingsbury Grade, the main connection between South Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley is back open after temporary repairs were made to stabilize the sink hole.
"We actually put in an interim repair and in the spring or early summer we'll come back and completely reinstall the eroding drainage pipe that caused the sinkhole," said Meg Ragonese, NDOT Public Information Officer.
She told South Tahoe Now to remind motorists that even though the road is open tonight, chains or snow tires are required.
Fatalities on Nevada's roads rose in 2016
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/06/2017 - 3:12pmIt wasn't record setting, but it was disturbing for safety officials in Nevada to read the reports that more people died on Nevada roads in 2016 than the previous year.
Preliminary data shows that 327 traffic fatalities occurred on the state's roads in 2016, one more death than in 2015. There were five more crashes, more pedestrians deaths by vehicles (5), and more motorcyclist deaths (21).
Alcohol related crashes and deaths decreased in 2016, with 11.46 percent fewer deaths and 15.38 percent fewer crashes relating to drunk driving.
Free sand bags available for South Lake Tahoe residents
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/04/2017 - 6:43pmWith the heavy rain and high snow levels associated with an atmospheric river hitting the Sierra and Lake Tahoe this weekend, the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County are reminding citizens that sand bags are available, free of charge.
During wet storms, residents may find themselves with flooding issues around their homes and garages.
Sand bags are available year-round at the City’s Streets and Snow Removal Yard located at 1160 Rufus Allen Blvd. Their operating hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Sinkhole causes closure of valley side of Kingsbury Grade

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) said the road will remain closed due to traffic safety concerns for the 5,600 vehicles who drive the road daily.
Minors with alcohol at SnowGlobe biggest problem for law enforcement
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/01/2017 - 8:00pmThe 2016 South Lake Tahoe three-day long music festival, SnowGlobe, is over, and the thousands of of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) fans are headed home after enjoying themselves during the outdoor concert. Like with most festivals of this type, most of the arrests and citations issued by South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO), and Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) were for underage drinking.
Early tabulations show that during SnowGlobe this year there were 238 arrests, 148 of those were citations to minors in possession of alcohol.

Over 10,000 people died in 2015 after someone chose to drink and drive.
New Year's Day is the single deadliest day for drunk driving and accidents caused by drunk drivers. The 12-hour window between 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 6 a.m. on Jan. 1 tends to have about 71 percent more crashes where alcohol or drugs are listed as a contributing factor.

Though Highway 50 through Stateline hasn't had to close until just before midnight the past two years, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is prepared to close it to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive.

Former South Lake Tahoe Fire Capt. Mark Wygant pleads guilty to child porn charge

Following an FBI and SLT Police Department investigation, Wygant was a
arrested on Jan. 29 2015 and has been in custody ever since. He had been immediately placed on administration leave but resigned just days after his arrest.
"I am pleased that Mr. Wygant plead guilty to his crime and the punishment will now in the hands of the criminal justice system," said SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston.
Caltrans to hold meeting about $50 million Highway 50 project on West Slope

The meeting will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Camino Elementary School, 3060 Snows Road, Camino. A project presentation will take place at 5:45 p.m.

Starting December 1, and going until December 24 if supplies last, the community can stop by their shop at the "Y" and help the non-profit group raise the funds needed to help local residents with cancer.

In August, the City of South Lake Tahoe applied to become a BFC and reached out to the community to participate in a survey, the results of which are part of the judging process.

Students use the room to get needed clothing including hats and coats, school supplies and food, as well as bicycles. Counseling services are also offered in the room.
South Tahoe High football team in Las Vegas for first state title bid since 1991

For the first time in 25 years, the South Tahoe High football team is headed to the Nevada Division 3A State football championship games in Las Vegas this weekend. The Vikings are coming off a victory over rival Truckee to head to Vegas as the number two seed from Northern Nevada.
The 28-20 win over Truckee sends South Tahoe to their first appearance at the state playoffs since 1991.

Expect delays on I-80 as Caltrans begins grooving project

Crews will be working from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until November 23.
Additional work days may be required after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. (No work is scheduled on Veterans’ Day November 11.)

Revitalization/Loop Road Project, the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (TahoeChamber) hosted a public meeting Thursday evening at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel. With the amount of negative public comments and voiced skepticism during past meetings, Measure T, and in social media, a larger group was expected than the 35 people who attended (and many of those were Tahoe Transportation and Tahoe Chamber staff).

Nevada population expected to grow by more than 425,000 in next 20 years

El Dorado County BOS appoint interim head of the Community Development Agency

At the BOS meeting Tuesday, Roger Niello was appointed to fill the spot vacated when Steve Pedretti left the position for Placer County.
Niello begins his job November 2.
Before he went into public service, Niello managed the Niello Auto Group for
25 years until 1999.

Minden resident wins iconic Nevada welcome sign

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) held a contest to find new owners, and nearly 14,500 residents entered the free raffle via phone, web site and social media, with winners selected randomly.
The four winners are from each region of the state: Northwest: Jennifer Bills (Reno), Southwest: Anna Thomas (from Minden), Northeast: Kaitlyn Tueller, Southeast: Breanna Kirkham.
