September message from South Lake Tahoe Mayor Fortier: Delivery, not diversion, is what drives the city

Let’s start with the elephant in the room: A councilmember has been linked to a bribery investigation. If anything is amiss, the repercussions will be significant. If nothing is amiss, the devastation to this councilmember, her reputation and her family is immeasurable and horrific.

But no matter the outcome, the damage has already been done. Trust and confidence in the city’s leadership has been shaken. A big question mark — “what now?” — hangs in the air. Which brings us back to the room: The City of South Lake Tahoe.

The agreement is a big change for a property that, as recently as 2007, had been slated for major resort development. That proposal stalled in the face of overwhelming opposition and an unfavorable economic climate – opening the way for conservationists to buy the land when the bank foreclosed on the loan.

Mayor Fortier's April Message: Focus is Fairness in Moving Forward, not Feuding

“Destiny,” said William Jennings Bryan, “is not a matter of chance, but a matter of choice.”

But it is amazing what a little focus can accomplish. In less than a year, our city is making real progress in pulling ourselves out of the morass that was so scathingly profiled in the 2009/2010 Grand Jury Report.
