More snow headed to Lake Tahoe this weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Are you shoveled out yet from this week's snowstorm? Get ready for another weekend storm that is expected to dump up to three feet of snow at upper elevations.

There are two weather systems moving into the region, the first Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon, and the second later on Saturday into Sunday with lingering snow possible on Monday.

The first system is much weaker than the winter storms that just passed but there will still be snow accumulations and impacts to the region Friday afternoon

Two deadly crashes on Northern Nevada highways

On US50 approximately five miles east of Dayton, a Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) Trooper was involved in a fatal crash at 2:40 p.m. on Monday, June 5. One person was confirmed deceased on scene. The Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper was transported via CareFlight to Renown with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The deceased victim of the crash is an adult male, according to a witness on-scene who performed CPR on him before paramedics arrived. His name has not been released. Family is being notified.

NHP targeting drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts

Nevada law enforcement agencies are "Joining Forces" from May 16 through June 1, looking for drivers and their passengers who are not buckled up while on the road.

They will also be checking to ensure children are properly in car or booster seat(s).

Troopers, deputies, and officers will be stopping drivers for different traffic offenses and issuing citations for seatbelt violations throughout Northern Nevada.

Single car rollover near Walker Lake claims life of German visitor

A German woman visiting the United States with her family died in a single vehicle rollover crash near Walker Lake on US95 May 7.

Liane Kramer, 24, was one of six people traveling north in a 2010 Toyota Sienna when the driver, 20-year-old Nina Kiseleva, went off the roadway after passing a semi-truck and trailer according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. The car overturned in the dirt shoulder and came to rest on its wheels facing southwest at approximately 8:15 a.m. Saturday.

Series of earthquakes near shores of Walker Lake

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno reports a series of small aftershocks after a 4.1 earthquake at 3:00 a.m. at Walker Lake, 12 miles northwest of the town of Hawthorne. It was located 6.76 miles under the surface.

This one followed a series of over 100 small earthquakes that surrounded a 4.3 last week and a 3.1 quake on Monday morning.

Since the early morning quake Tuesday there have been seven smaller ones, the largest of which measured 2.8 at the UNR lab.

Thousands of Nevada earthquakes kept seismologists busy in 2015

If you live in Nevada, chances are you felt an earthquake in 2015. The University of Nevada, Reno's Seismological Laboratory said there were 17,500 earthquakes in the state during the year, 231 of those recently in south Reno.

South Tahoe High graduate Graham Kent in the director of the Nevada Seismological Lab. "While the Reno shaking is fresh in our minds, what's really bumping the number up from the background rates is the energetic sequence in far northwestern Nevada, the Sheldon sequence," he said.

Walker Fire burns 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained

8 p.m. update 8/18/15:

The Walker Fire has now burned 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained. It has been determined that the fire is human caused and is under investigation.

There are 484 firefighters working on the fire along with 4 helicopters, 2 Air tankers, 34 Engines, 10 Crews, 6 Water Tenders, and 4 Dozers.

235 structures remain threatened but none have burned so far.

Nevada Seismo Lab used quake-monitoring network to track Sutter’s Mill meteorite

When the Sutter Mill’s meteorite streaked across the Nevada sky in April, it made a loud boom and shook homes throughout the region. Ken Smith, associate director for the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno heard it and felt it that Sunday morning. His scientific curiosity drew him right to the lab’s earthquake monitoring network to see what registered on the more than 150 reporting stations. He found an astonishing series of registrations.

Big fish caught at Lake Tahoe

The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.

Burn pile spreads into brush fire on Cold Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe (updated)

Update 12:22PM: A small brush fire on Cold Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe is contained and burned about one-quarter of an acre, reports U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Cheva Heck. Fire personnel from Lake Valley Fire Protection District and South Lake Tahoe and U.S. Forest Service brought the fire to containment. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Heck said. Initial reports that came in said the fire started as a backyard burn pile.
