Kirkwood passes the 500" of snow mark; Other Lake Tahoe resorts close behind

The two feet of snow added to the slopes at Kirkwood Ski Resort this week has pushed their snowpack to 508 inches as of Sunday, and there is still lots more to come.

With another month of winter, Kirkwood still has time to add many more inches to their snowpack, as do all other Sierra Nevada Resorts. Kirkwood had 504 inches of snow in 2012, the last strong winter experienced in the mountains near Lake Tahoe. March is historically a month where snow can reach the same, or higher, levels than January and February.

What is best solution to keep visitors leaving Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 and not on side streets?

It's another snowy weekend, and another weekend of drivers trying to head home over Echo Summit via Lake Tahoe Blvd and North Upper Truckee Road. With a backup at the chain control stop in Meyers, many are trying to circumvent not only the traffic, but the controls and causing issues on snow covered side roads.

With Highway 50 closed, Sheriff tells drivers: Do not go by your GPS!

With the closure of Hwy 50 due to a mudslide, several motorists have taken to their GPS units to try to navigate around the closure. This has led to numerous parties getting stuck on roads that are closed during the winter, and in the end, has tied up valuable resources rescuing them from deep snow or impassable roads.

In the winter, the only safe alternate route when Hwy 50 is closed is to use SR88 to the South, or I80 to the North. You can take Hwy 49 in Placerville to reach either one. At this time though, both alternative routes are closed.

South Lake Tahoe to get rain and snow as a series of storms approach the Sierra

The groundhog seeing his shadow in South Lake Tahoe is questionable as a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for elevations above 6,500 feet in the Lake Tahoe Basin from 1:00 a.m. Thursday until 4:00 a.m. Saturday.

The latest storm moves into the Sierra late Wednesday, February 1, bringing moderate to heavy snow by Thursday morning at higher elevations. Snow will decrease substantially in intensity by Thursday afternoon as the first wave of unsettled weather passes through according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The next storm then moves in late Thursday night through Friday.

Lake Tahoe Winter Storm Warning above 7000 feet for Thursday and Friday

The inversion layer over Lake Tahoe Tuesday will be pushed out Wednesday as a new storm hits the basin late Wednesday night. Travel over the passes will be impacted during this storm, but with a winter storm warning up for elevations above 7,000 feet, lake level will see mostly rain with a little snow.

Snow will begin to move into the Sierra late Wednesday night with periods of moderate to heavy snow continuing through Friday evening according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The winter storm warning has moved to 1:00 a.m. Thursday to 10:00 p.m. Friday, February 3.
