Final measurement of snow in Sierra shows water-rich snowpack at 190% of normal

Monday was the final manual snow survey at Phillips Station in the Sierra Nevada, and the snowpack is still measured at a healthy 190 percent of the May 1 long-term average of Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) which is 14.6 inches. Today's measurement was 27.8 inches.

The survey was conducted by the Department of Water Resources (DWR).

Grading season begins in Lake Tahoe, but only if soil is ready

The annual grading season of May 1 to October 15 begins today in the Lake Tahoe Basin and those who will be disturbing soil need to remember some rules after this wet winter.

No grading can take place during times of precipitation, and if the project site is still covered in snow, saturated or muddy, all grading and soil disturbing activities must be suspended.

Crews clearing seasonally closed Sierra passes, some opening dates projected

Snow, rocks, boulders, trees and debris are being cleared from roads through the Sierra Nevada that have been closed all winter. Caltrans crews from Districts 9 and 10 are plowing through several feet of snow in some area. While some roads will be opening soon, many have a lot of work to be done before they can open to traffic.

Crews will inspect the road, bridges, culverts to make sure the road is safe for the public before reopening. They will also replace signs that tumbled during the winter.

Another roof collapses in South Lake Tahoe after wet winter

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a roof collapse at the corner of 3rd Street and South Street Wednesday morning.

A portion of the roof collapsed due in part to lack of maintenance and the snow and rain load it experienced this winter. The home was not occupied and the out-of-town home owner was already planning to work on the home/lot this summer.

Even though snow has melted off many roofs in the Lake Tahoe area, damage can still be experienced as seen on this home with a flat roof.

Guest Columnist: Hoping for a bipartisan solution to health care

The Republican Party’s decision on March 24 to pull the vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was met with disappointment and relief. While backers of the newly proposed legislation were disappointed that they could not find sufficient support, residents who depend on the Affordable Care Act’s medical protections and insurance options felt relief. Hope continues for a broad bipartisan approach to change this complex legislation resulting in improved coverage balanced with affordability for our citizens.

Kingsbury Grade reopens

Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) reopened at 4:30 p.m. Saturday after closing Friday afternoon to allow crews to remove a slide and remove trees and boulders.

Rockfall mitigation experts spent Saturday bringing down boulders from the top of a roadside slope on Kingsbury Grade. Heavy precipitation had loosened not only the boulders, but trees as well.

The roadway is now clear and traffic is moving from the Carson Valley to Lake Tahoe. Nevada Department of Transportion (NDOT) and their contractor Q&D Construction made repairs to an eroding roadside slope and extensive rockfall.

4:15 p.m. update: Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) will remain closed indefinitely on the Carson Valley side of the road as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) continues safety evaluation and removal of major rockfall.

The highway was closed early Friday afternoon as NDOT and contractor Q&D Construction removed loose trees and earth from a roadside slope to help reduce rock and mud fall onto the highway. The slope had slid approximately one foot within the past 24 hours, posing the threat of bringing mud, rock and debris across the highway.

High winds in South Lake Tahoe; heavy snow and rain on the way

A late season atmospheric river will bring another significant precipitation event to the Sierra and western Nevada. Near saturated soils and a mostly ripe low to mid elevation snowpack will contribute to increased runoff. This will increase flood potential, especially along creeks and streams, Friday into Saturday. This event isn`t expected to be as strong as storms in January and February but is a significant precipitation event for April.

The winds have arrived in South Lake Tahoe, and three weather related warnings have come with them: wind, snow and flooding.

South Lake Tahoe roads to soon receive much needed attention

People driving through South Lake Tahoe have mostly likely cringed as their car finds a pothole on a local street. That, or dodged them all by driving in a zig-zag pattern that appears to be that of a drunk driver.

After a winter with extreme rainfall, constant snow removal and high groundwater, there is most likely no street that has been spared an outbreak of potholes.

South Lake Tahoe Mayor Sass: Loop Road, housing and bike trails

With the warm spell of late, at lake level it looks like the big snow storms never happened. However, go up above 8,000 feet and you see a much different picture. Atop Heavenly’s Dipper Chair there is an information shack that is between 8-10 feet high. Next to it is 10 foot high signage indicating where the runs are. As of today, you can’t see either of these. Over 50 feet of snow fell up there and even with the melt and the settling, there is still a ton of white stuff. I expect our streams will be flowing into August and our mountains might stay white throughout the summer.

Lake Tahoe customers of Liberty Utilities seeing higher than expected bills

The winter of 2017 has been full of surprises with record amounts of rain and snow, but one surprise came in the mail by wait of an electric bill.

Many Liberty Utilities customers have noticed their January and February bills were higher than expected. Due to extreme weather, the utility company had to bill based on estimated billing as actual meter reads were impossible. For some customers, actual reads may not have occurred until March if a customer’s scheduled meter read was during the February winter storms.
