Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/27/2015 - 7:45pmSheriff Ron Pierini recently announced the graduation of two Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies from the State of Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Law Enforcement Academy.
Douglas County Deputies Matthew Sampson and Steven Kimbrell graduated from the academy on Thursday, November 19, 2015, after attending the academy for four months. The P.O.S.T. academy is located at the State of Nevada Stewart Training Facility, in Carson City, Nev.

Modeled after San Francisco's LitQuake, organizers of Tahoe WordWave have gathered creative and inspiring writers, musicians, and performers from around the country to share their talents over a three day experience at Tallac Historic Site. The festival will be interactive, featuring readings, workshops, plays, open mics, guided hikes, and oral storytelling.

An interactive, and free, book festival will be held at Valhalla on October 10, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and some activities are meant for kids.
Tahoe Wordwave will have several opportunities for the younger set to get creative, from bookmaking and printmaking to a novel writing camp. There will also be book arts, poetry, travel writing, fiction and songwriting workshops.
Superintendent to discuss student test score results at meeting

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) was an on-line assessment that measured their problem solving and critical thinking skills.
LTUSD Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater will present the results to the School Board Trustees during Tuesday's board meeting.
TRPA gives City of South Lake Tahoe more control over building permits
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/14/2015 - 10:11pmThe Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has entered into a new partnership with the City of South Lake Tahoe to streamline the permit process in city limits.
When the Tahoe Valley Area and Tourist Core Plans were approved, it opened the door for a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) so city staff can carry out TRPA's environmental review.
"The TRPA wants the community to thrive," said John Hitchcock, Planning Manager for the City. "They are comfortable with us taking the lead on projects."
The new MOU went into affect on Monday, September 14, 2015.
FBI affidavit alleges man found hiding out in South Lake Tahoe confessed
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/04/2015 - 2:34pmA Sacramento County man accused of kidnapping a Vallejo woman in March allegedly confessed to the crime in a recorded jailhouse interview and said he did it alone, according to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court.
Matthew Muller, 38, of Orangevale, is charged with kidnapping physical therapist Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23 and keeping her captive for two days before dropping her off near her mother's house in Huntington Beach.

Why you ask?
To understand we need to take a step back in time to the year 1983 when a young Bridey was in 7th grade. She had found the band Duran Duran at a very difficult time in her young life and they helped her cope with a life full of trauma as well as moving from town to town. By the time she graduated high school she had been in 26 schools.

Martin, 60, died July 3 in the Pike & San Isabel National Forest, 30 miles southwest of Denver. The 3.1-million-acre forest holds the record for the most gun-related violations reported in the country, a review of federal records by the USA TODAY Media Network shows.

Body cameras not in the near future for South Lake Tahoe Police
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/18/2015 - 10:29pmIn light of the recent officer involved shooting in South Lake Tahoe, the discussion about body cameras being worn by local law enforcement has once again surfaced. While there has been discussion by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), according to Lt. Brian Williams, no decisions have been made.
"A large part [of the wearing of cameras] hinges on the State as there may be regulations coming soon," said Williams. He said they have to watch out for taxpayers dollars and not spend money on a system that might not be allowed by state laws.
Bicycle and pedestrian safety a big concern in South Lake Tahoe

In the last six years, 12 people have died in South Lake Tahoe while cycling or walking. In that same time, 42 people were injured while riding bikes on the road while 37 pedestrians were hurt.

Jeremy Evans hired as new LTCC women’s head soccer coach

Each year the members of the club collaborate with the Language Arts teachers at STMS to provide an opportunity for students to express themselves.
Winning essays are selected from each grade level. First place and first place honors winners each won a $75 cash award, second place $50 and third place $25.

Five, six, seven, eight. Dancers will always have numbers in their head as they count out the beat, and those participating in the annual Dancing With the Tahoe Stars are no doubt experiencing just that as they wrap up their final two weeks of rehearsals.
There's an old saying: "Writing about art is like dancing about architecture." After watching rehearsals this week I starting searching for the words to start as I found that translating the movement of the human body into something written down to be a frustrating process.

Laure Penny hired as new Douglas County Clerk to the Board

Penny, who began work Monday, was most recently was a paralegal for Nevada Attorney for Injured Workers with prior employment as a Supreme Court Clerk and legal secretary.
“Douglas County is one of my favorite places to be and I am very excited to be able to work for and serve the wonderful people who live here,” said Penny.

Teddy Bear Hospital a big hit at Barton's Festival of the Trees

Not only did they have hot chocolate and popcorn, but kids were making ornaments, writing letters to santa, watching the performers from Marcia Sarosik Dance and South Tahoe high, but the jolly guy himself was there, listening to all of the wish lists.
Teddy bears of all shapes, sizes and conditions were taken to the Teddy Bear Hospital where doctors and nurses from Barton Health examined, x-rayed and bandaged the bears who weren't feeling too well.

If you are, or have been, a student or faculty member of Lake Tahoe Community College, you are eligible to submit up to five poems or up to two pieces of literacy fiction or non-fiction for publication in the journal.

Letter: Coyote soccer experience great for fans, players and coaches

Coyote players lay on the pitch with their hands over their faces in shock that we had let in a SECOND goal, and defeat seemed imminent.
And then something happened.
THE CROWD STARTED CHEERING!!!
I thought to myself on the sidelines, "Wow, that's a nice gesture since their team is being beat 2-0." Everyone on the bench and on the field thought the game was most likely over.

Prop 47: Safer schools and neighborhoods or 10,000 convicted felons on the streets?
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/06/2014 - 7:15pmBeing touted as "The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act" by proponents, Proposition 47 will mandate misdemeanors instead of felonies for “non-serious, nonviolent crimes," unless the defendant has prior convictions for murder, rape, certain sex offenses or certain gun crimes.
The reason Prop 47 got this name is because a fund bearing it's name will be created by the estimated savings of $150M to $250M the state will receive by not having to prosecute crimes that would become misdemeanors.

The new project, located at Heavenly Mountain Resort, will expand their summer activities to include more canopy tours, hiking and biking trails as well as interpretive activities.
Since 2011 the U.S. Forest Service has allowed more summer activities on national forest lands.

Survey being conducted to see if better, faster internet needed in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/18/2014 - 9:39pmThe Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) wants to facilitate the expansion of high speed internet in the Lake Tahoe Basin, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. In order to see where the need is, a speed test of your current internet service and a survey is being conducted.
County Asks for Community Input on Mental Health Services Act Plan for 2014/15

That number doubles in a population where people live below 200% of the poverty level (an annual income of $23,340 for 1 person, $47,700 for a family of 4 for example).
With the current population of El Dorado County at approximately 181,000, that means anywhere between 8,329 and 16,114 people are in need of Mental Health Services.
