SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Those opposing the proposed $6,000 vacancy tax in South Lake Tahoe are invited to join others against the tax in planned protests on April 2 and April 3.

Signatures are being gathered to get the initiative on the November ballot to tax homes in the City that are vacant six months or more during the year.

A few South Lake Tahoe residents will be demonstrating against the proposed tax, a penalty for owning a vacation home and are unable to vote on the tax measure, if on the ballot.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Members of the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will continue prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe, conditions and weather permitting. Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,342,192,407 for February 2024, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's latest monthly report. This amounts to an 8.5 percent increase compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,237,048,360. For the fiscal year to date (since July), the gaming win has increased by 5.23 percent with $10,627,278,313 in "win".

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One might have thought it was a Christmas celebration when Mother Nature put six inches of fresh snow on the ground for the sold-out Heavenly Village Easter Egg Hunt. Despite the snowy surprise, the fourth annual hunt was a big success, and spirits were not dampened.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Note-Ables Music Therapy Services will be coming to South Lake Tahoe from Reno to present a workshop for participants 14 years and older who have developmental disabilities or are neurodivergent. The workshop will be held at Lake Tahoe Christian Fellowship on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The cost is $10 and lunch is included.

Letter to the Editor: Bringing homemade chicken soup, shoveling snow or watering the flowers when on vacation used to be how people showed love to their neighbors. Unfortunately – and especially in recent weeks, loving your neighbor in Tahoe now means taxing your neighbor’s vacant house. It’s hard to fathom the existence of individuals energized to tax everyone else other than themselves. So, I’ve come up with the “Forever Tahoe Taxation Plan.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Enjoy the 21st annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski and Snowshoe Celebration on Sunday, April 14, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe History Complex.

The Lake Tahoe Historial Society is hosting the free event that will feature Snowshoe Thompson, portrayed by historian and author David Woodruff, a demonstration of Nordic folk dancing, historic longboard ski racer and newly crowned world champion Adam Henriques, Snowshoe Thompson modern day endurance Aathlete presentation by Bob Crowley, co-founder of History Expeditions.

Calcium-Rich Foods: Women need more calcium to support bone health, especially after the age of 30. Dairy products, leafy green vegetables, and calcium-fortified foods are good sources.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The search is on for volunteers who love to be paid in smiles and hugs while making a difference in a person's life. The local Special Olympic group seeks volunteers to work with athletes in their swim program. You don't have to be a "seasoned" coach, but you do need to enjoy working with this population. This is an "in-the-pool" position.

Class 18 of the Lake Tahoe Fire Academy held its graduation this week at the Tahoe Blue Event Center. Started in 2007, the Academy is a pipeline to active fire service in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The graduates have undergone fire training including wildland fire, hazardous materials, ice rescue, ventilation training, and other experiential learning services.

Normally a one-year program, this year's class graduated in just six months. The curriculum was revamped to accommodate the new schedule, increasing the number of people eligible to help fill fire service needs immediately.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe community has many hard-working individuals who continue to put the health and welfare of our youth as their top priority. Drug and alcohol prevention, for many of us, is the foundation for overall youth success. Drug and alcohol-free youth lead to healthier, happier, and more productive adults. Students who abstain from experimentation, are more likely not to use or abuse drugs or alcohol in the future. Plainly stated, prevention is the key to more positive and successful lives overall.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) is holding a Born to Be Wild: Wildlife Baby Shower on Saturday, April 20th, 2024. The public is invited to drop in at any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Each year hundreds of wild baby animals are brought to the center in desperate need – whether due to sickness, injury, or being orphaned. In their hour of need, it is unwavering support from the public that becomes their lifeline.

Chase International Foundation recently awarded $6,000 to non-profit agencies in Reno and Lake Tahoe as part of their ‘Four Pillars of Giving” grant program.

The funds were distributed to the Boys & Girls of Lake Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Xquisite, which provides services throughout the Northern Nevada region, and Special Operations Finding Kids of Reno, Nev., and San Francisco, Calif..

There will be 42 ski and snowboarders from the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association, South Tahoe Series (USASA - STS) who will be competing in the USASA National Championships hosted in Copper Mountain, Colorado from March 29, 2024 - April 11, 2024.

All of the South Tahoe Series athletes have had a wonderfully successful season filled with triumphs and progression. An invitation to Nationals is a major highlight for all of the athletes, they have all worked so very hard!

Dear Citizens of South Lake Tahoe, A few months ago, I wrote to you my personal opinion as one of your City Council members regarding my great concern about the multitude of unnecessary taxes being proposed in our city. It was titled “Now Is Not the Time.” With gasoline, eggs, and even fast food sky high and with Liberty just raising our electric bills 40 percent, it’s still not the time for any new taxes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Untethered Workspace has graciously decided to match up to $25,000 in donations to the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe through the end of May. Raised funds will benefit the Club’s community playground campaign, “Let the Kids Play!”.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for the region from 11 a.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday. The warning covers the Greater Lake Tahoe area of Stateline, Incline Village, Markleeville, South Lake Tahoe, Glenbrook, Tahoe City, and Truckee.

Expect heavy snow at times with snow accumulations of 8 to 18 inches with up to 30 inches along the Sierra crest. Winds will be gusting as high as 40 mph.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Valley Performing Arts presents Frozen KIDS! Over 70 Tahoe Valley Elementary students are involved in the production.

Shows are Tuesday, April 2, Wednesday, April 3, and Thursday, April 4 in the Tahoe Valley Thunderbird Theater. The show starts at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Seats are first come first served unless you have purchased the reserved VIP seats.
