Monday morning South Lake Tahoe storm recap

10:00 a.m. update 1/9/17: The City of South Lake Tahoe and the American Red Cross have closed their evacuation center in the city. One person arrived at the evacuation center last night.

"LTUSD and the Red Cross were excellent partners during last night’s storm event," said Tracy Franklin of the City of South Lake Tahoe.

The SLT Public Works department will be focusing on snow removal today. They are also working on getting the deep slushy water out of roadways. Franklin said the flood areas are still flooded and not receding at this point.

According to Jim Marino, Assistant Public Works Director, this was the 4th largest storm is the last 40 years in South Lake Tahoe.

Denny’s and Tahoe Urgent Care both flooded Sunday. Urgent Care was inspected this morning by City inspectors and is expected to reopen on Wednesday. Denny's is having repairs completed and will also be closed "a couple of days."

South Lake Tahoe residents are waking up to snow, instead of the inches of rain pummeling the south shore Sunday, with more snow on the way as a winter storm warning is in place until Thursday at 4:00 a.m.

Heavenly, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood are all closed today.

There is currently a power outage on Heavenly's California side, along with winds 55 mph and above, prompting them to close for the day. In the last 24 hours they received rain as well as up to 12" of snow. Over at Sierra, the closed due to safety concerns due to avalanche and high wind warnings.

All Lake Tahoe area schools are closed.

The forecast for South Lake Tahoe on Monday is for snow and dropping temperatures, with 28 degrees by 4:00 p.m. It will be breezy, with a southwest wind around 25 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Total daytime snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible. It will start to warm up overnight with 39 degrees by 4:00 a.m. The same winds, 100% chance of precipitation and new snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.

I80 is reopened to eastbound traffic after a mudslide closed the road Sunday night. Westbound from the state line to Colfax remains closed. Chain controls are up on Highway 50 over Echo Summit and most area roads.

Kingsbury Grade is still closed this morning after a sinkhole on the valley side caused concerns. Crews are out there this morning, evaluating the problem. It is unknown at this time if it is the same sinkhole that closed the road last week.

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center is closed due to flooding.

South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire responded to 47 different house flooding incidents on Sunday.

The City of South Lake Tahoe will be having a 9:00 a.m. meeting to review the situation and what happened during Sunday's downpour. Updates from that meeting will be posted on South Tahoe Now.

Most river areas in the Reno and Carson City area crested overnight. Sparks will crest about noon.

Lake Tahoe rose .11 feet Sunday, bringing level to 6224.15 feet. The lake is considered full at 6,225 feet. Flooding stage is 6,229 feet.

Sawmill Pond and Lake Tahoe Blvd intersection is open. According to CHP, the intersection of Highway 50 and Pioneer Trail has a lot of water, but is not closed.
