Henning Mehrens, MD, has spent over 45 years keeping the South Lake Tahoe community healthy and will be missed as he retires and is off to the next chapter of his life.
Both through his private practice as well as at Tahoe Urgent Care, Dr. Mehrens worked both tirelessly and passionately for those he cared for. Besides maintaining those offices he was also the medical director of the Skilled Nursing Facility at Barton Memorial Hospital.

LTUSD asks students and staff to self-quarantine if returning from any COVID-19 infected area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) sent out a letter to all students and staff concerning the district's Pandemic Preparedness Plan in regards to travel and self-quarantine.

Effective Monday, March 9, 2020, all students and staff returning from travel out-of-the-country or from COVID-19 infected areas in California or other areas of the United States are strongly recommended to self-quarantine in their home for 14 consecutive days beginning the date of their return to South Lake Tahoe.

Barton expands walk-in orthopedic care services in South Lake Tahoe and Carson City

Nurses in four states go on strike including those at Barton Hospital

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Hospital nurses went from the operating room to the picket line Friday morning, saying their 15 months of union contract negotiations with their employer have not done enough to address health benefits for nurses.

The nurses with their signs spread out on the four corners of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and 3rd Street as well as across the street from the hospital on South Street.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was well below freezing but spirits warmed the air as car after car honked at the dozens of Barton Health nurses, both current and retired, picketing on both sides of Highway 50 on 3rd Street in South Lake Tahoe.

"We've had amazing support from the community," said emergency room nurse Ronnie Navarro, an 11-year employee of the hospital. That community included other local unions including the police and fire departments.

The majority of influenza cases this year have been typed as A(H3N2), a particularly nasty strain of the flu that has been associated with more hospitalizations and complications. Monday morning South Lake Tahoe storm recap

10:00 a.m. update 1/9/17: The City of South Lake Tahoe and the American Red Cross have closed their evacuation center in the city. One person arrived at the evacuation center last night.

"LTUSD and the Red Cross were excellent partners during last night’s storm event," said Tracy Franklin of the City of South Lake Tahoe.

The SLT Public Works department will be focusing on snow removal today. They are also working on getting the deep slushy water out of roadways. Franklin said the flood areas are still flooded and not receding at this point.

Flooding closing South Lake Tahoe area roads

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - El Dorado County has closed Lake Tahoe Blvd at Sawmill Pond due to flooding just before 11:00 a.m. It is closed in both directions according to the California Highway Patrol with over two feet of water on the roadway. They are expecting the flooding to spread in the area.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department is assisting with signage going up to warn travelers.

12:52 p.m. Sunday update - Highway 50 at Sierra at Tahoe Blvd is experiencing flooding. Reports of high water at Apache Drive in Meyers by the Post Office, and Lake Tahoe Blvd around Angora Creek.

Barton providing free sports physicals to all student athletes

Barton Health is offering pre-participation physicals for students who were not able to attend the Tahoe Center for Orthopedics sports physicals event on May 25. All high school, middle school, and Pop Warner athletes from the Tahoe area can participate.

Dr. Paul Marlowe retires after serving community for 32 years

In September, longtime physician Dr. Paul Marlowe will say farewell to his patients and the urgent care practice where he has provided care for 32 years as he embarks on an adventure with his wife Lorraine. The uniquely quirky and endearing Dr. Marlowe is known throughout the community for providing exceptional care since 1983.

With the retirement of Dr. Gregory Bergner in April and the pending retirement of Dr. Paul Marlow in September, Barton Urgent Care and Barton Health have announced the new team at their Stateline office.

Warren Withers, MD, has moved from his position as Director of Emergency Services at Barton Hospital to Barton Urgent Care. He will join Patti Bucher, FNP and Michelle Feeney, FNP who both joined Barton Urgent Care this past year.

Barton's Doctor of the Year for 2015: Henning Mehrens, M.D.

Barton Health used National Doctor's Day on March 30 to announce this year's Doctor of the Year, Henning Mehrens, M.D. . He won the honor in recognition of his work at the Barton Skilled Nursing Facility and for his other specialties of family practice and urgent care.

Barton Health staff and physicians gathered in the hospital’s Snowflake Lobby to recognize Mehrens who has been on staff there since 1976.

Dr. Gregory Bergner set to retire from Barton Health

In 1981, Dr. Gregory Bergner opened Tahoe Family Physicians along with Dr. Brooks Martin and Dr. Paul Rork. The popular physicians delivered hundreds of South Lake Tahoe babies and kept many in the community healthy in a family friendly atmosphere.

Bergner is set to retire on April 14 after 34 years of helping the South Shore, not only as a doctor but as someone who actively sponsored, volunteered, and participated in many local organizations.

Severe Flu Cases on the Rise in South Lake Tahoe

The flu season is in full swing in South Lake Tahoe as well as across the country, prompting health officials to warn people of the severity.

This year the predominant flu strain in the United States is H1N1, the same one that caused the international pandemic in 2009-2010. Medical experts believe that this strain will take its toll on children and middle aged adults. So far this winter, 13 deaths have been attributed to the flu in North Carolina. In Hildago, Texas there have already been 6 deaths and 2 in Salt Lake City. Six children have died nationally during this flu season.

FCC Chairman cites Barton Health's program as a catalyst for nationwide broadband expansion

Barton Health's Telemedicine program, which was launched as part of a Rural Healthcare Pilot Program, received accolades this month from the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission who noted the South Lake Tahoe program aided in recent decisions made by the Commission to expand a broadband Telemedicine program nationally.

FCC Chairman visits Barton Health, praises Telemedicine program

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, and Wireline Competition Bureau Deputy Chief, Carol Mattey, visited Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe on Monday, July 30.
Genachowski and his team arrived at Barton to observe best practices in telemedicine and how Barton has implemented and utilized funds from the FCC for the Rural Health Care Pilot Program through their telehealth program.
