Winter Storm Warning through Sunday in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Lake Tahoe from Valentine's Day through Sunday, February 17 at noon.

After a day that saw mostly rain at lake level, the National Weather Service updated the warning, extending the length of the warning that originally issued and lowering snow levels through the three-day period.

Lake Tahoe is currently experiencing heavy snow and will continue to see it fall until Sunday. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet at lake level with 3 to 6 feet above 7000 feet. Winds will be gusting as high as 130 mph today across Sierra Ridges with gusts to 60 mph across the ridgelines the remainder of the weekend.

The USFS Sierra Avalanche Center has extended its avalanche warning through 7:00 a.m. Friday. Rain on snow, heavy snow, and gale force winds will create complicated and dangerous avalanche conditions. Expect a mix of wind slab, storm slab, and loose wet avalanche problems at all elevations. Rain on snow could also cause dangerous roof-avalanches as roofs still holding snow unload. Natural avalanches are likely and human-triggered avalanches are very likely. Some avalanches may be large and destructive.
