Beautiful Thanksgiving day around Lake Tahoe, more snow expected

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Chain controls over many mountain roads are being lifted this morning as the beautiful blue skies Lake Tahoe is famous for are appearing from behind the clouds.

As of 11:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving, Caltrans has removed chain controls from US50 at Echo Summit but there is a small pocket from Fresh Pond to Sly Park that requires them at this time.

More snow is due to return to the Lake Tahoe Basin today. A Winter Storm Warning is in place until 4:00 p.m. Accuweather says to expect some snow flurries by 1:00 p.m., then after a cloudy afternoon, they return at 8:00 p.m. Doppler Radar shows a band of unsettled weather by 4:00 p.m. The National Weather Service in Reno has the following forecast for Thanksgiving:

Snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. East wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. Tonight - Snow likely, mainly before 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 8. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

A Winter Storm Watch is in place for Lake Tahoe starting Saturday afternoon and going until Monday morning. Heavy snow with accumulations of 8 to 16 inches at lake level and 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet is possible.
